Hi, this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens, we're here at a great swamp in Houston. We're photographing alligators and birds with a 150-600mm Tamron lens, plus a couple of teleconverters from Tamron. What do you get when you add a teleconverter to a 150-600mm lens? Let's check it out and see.
Keep those cameras rollin' and keep on clickin'.

  • Something that might have been nice for the quality comparison would be to throw your lens out to 600mm with no teleconverter, then put the 2x on there and put the lens at 300mm, effective 600mm and show those images side by side. It would be the same focal length and framing without any digital enlargement on either. Would be really interesting to see if the difference is perceptible. I have a tamron 70-200 2.8 and have been considering getting a tele for it. (Bought it off of your recommendation and love it.)

  • I love the Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens for wildlife, though my 'teleconverter' is using it on my Nikon D500. The lens is sharp enough to handle the high pixel density of a 20MP APS-C sensor, making it a natural fit for a D500 or a Canon 7D Mark II.

  • Hi, Thanks for the video. I have a question, what will happen to the depth of field of a lens when attached with a teleconverter? And I would like to add one more pro that I experienced from teleconverters. Teleconverters will help lense designed for apsc sensors to fill full frame sensors.

  • Tried to send you a moon shot but it won’t budge. Don’t have the patience to figure it out right now but I use the 150-600 with the 2x and my d850 or 810 for astro. And it works great although I seem to be having problems seeing anything with the whole rig. Im down to thinking it may be condensation. How long do you think it should take to equalize from a 73 degree house to 31 degrees . Im trying to shoot Orions nebula. I have a tough time just finding things up there. I can see them with my naked eye but finding them in the viewfinder is tough. I’m in a wheelchair and I seem to be set up good but even finding Orions belt when its very bright has eluded me. If you have time to answer. Thanks for all your vids and I love your sense of humor.

  • Awesome video viewed a few people's posts that said just crop the picture but like you mentioned It's not so good. I own a sigma 70-200 2.8 and after viewing your review I intend to purchase the Sigma 2x converter. To me, it's a no brainer for a used excellent condition 2x converter on the web at $150. Thanks for the help oh and like others have said I don't think id be that close to the water with my back, lol.

  • For birds and wildlife f/6.3 is already too slow, as animals tend to be more active early in the morning and in the evenings. A teleconverter makes that even worse. I haven't tested the tamron converter so I really can't tell how sharp it is. Even if it is reasonably sharp it will drive iso to unusable levels if you shoot moving animals that require fast shutter speeds. Teleconverters not only magnifies your subject they also magnify any lens errors or even add some errors of their own. To compensate for that you usually ned to stop down your aperture a step or two, and this makes the iso problem even worse. In general teleconverters are a bad idea on zoom lenses unless it specifically designed to be for that and matched to your lens. They work best on fast sharp primes such as 300/2.8 or 400/2.8

    @unoengborg@unoengborg6 жыл бұрын
    • I'd agree that primes are ideal for their sharpness, especially with a teleconverter, but in order to be in focus edge-to-edge on a lot of birds, I've shot at f/13, even though my lens+tele setup can go faster. Newer bodies also can push to higher ISOs better...I've gotten some very usable ISO 8000 shots in the early evening of birds in flight.

  • Want more focal length for your lens? Take it off your 5D Mark III and put it on a 7D Mark II for a crop factor of 1.6X instead of using a teleconverter.

  • I have a dilemma. I have the tamron 70-200mm 2.8 g2. But I am interested in the new 100-400mm as well. Would I be better off just getting the 2x teleconverter for the 2.8, that would make it 5.6 400mm vs. The 400mm 6.3? I haven't had good luck with image quality with teleconverter in the past.

  • I use all Canon gears, DSLR bodies, lenses and teleconverters. Own both 1.4x and 2x. When I need maximum reach, I use EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II with 2x on an APS-C body. This gives me 960mm ff equivalent of reach. Tried to stack up the 1.4x with it via an extension tube. It works but have to focus manually as the AF is lost. I use 5DII and 7D bodies. Any solutions to make the stacked combo AF? Thanks in advance.

  • Great vid... Coming from a film backround and just getting into high quality digital, the golden rule was only to use teleconverters on good prime lenses with fast apertures. I am a Nikon shooter that shot high school and college baseball, football. Started with the F 2AS, F3HP then moved to the F4S and N90S and I have a lot of legacy Nikon glass and 2 Nikon teleconverters. I never liked my results with the 2x on my 80-200 f/2.8 but found the 2x to be good on the 180mm, 200mm and 300 primes. Have the new teleconverters really come that far to produce quality images on zooms with modest apertures?

    @canjo7301@canjo73016 жыл бұрын
  • First, WELCOME to TEXAS and what appears to be Brazos Bend State Park. Next time you're in town, give me a shout out and I'd be happy to take you to some off the grid locations if you don't know them already. Thanks for the video, but I believe one thing you didn't mention is that by using the teleconverter your minimum depth of field changes as well, does it not? (i.e. f-stop multiplied by 40 percent). Ops, sorry. I see someone already mentioned DOF issues below.

    • MAXimus LAWLESSnessTM, that’s an American Alligator, the American Alligator are not terrifying, they are like big cute babies. They are part of the Alligatoridae family, including caimans which are a distant relative to Crocodylidae. There are only two known living alligator species today as well, Chinese Alligator being the other one. However there are a lot more crocodiles out there and are part of the Crocodylidae family. You also have the Gharial which is part of the Gavialidae family. The only species to really be aware of is part of the Crocodylidae family and that’s the lovely and dangerous Nile Crocodile as well as the Salt Water Crocodile. I’ll keep all the technical, Latin, and Greek names out other than the families to lesson the confusion. None of these herpetile are there waiting to receive hugs and kisses but you need to think of it like any animal. Even a so called domesticated dog can turn into a dangerous creature. No animal is domesticated, period, just levels of domestication. But again, it’s an Alligator and still don’t go to give the big babies a hug and a kiss like a would, I just love my herps. Apologies if I spelled anything wrong, my spelling sucks.
