In our third instalment, we tackle a full refurbishment and rebuild of a Valeo A13VI217 BMW OEM alternator. With step-by-step teardown and rebuild so you see how it's done. I'll be doing "fixit" videos so you can see how I did it, what problems you can run across, and how to get the job done right.

  • I apreachiate that you willing to help people out BUT: You removed the stater coil from the housing...and that means, unless you have the means to set the air gap between it and the rotor it will be off which WILL produce power spikes as it rotates. Wonder how much of that will the car electronics/battery tolerate. Its just better to leave it on unless you absolutely have to, in which case find a way to be able to reinstall it exactly as you took it off (marks and shims ect.) Speaking of tolerance. The new brash collars need to be shaved down on a late to make sure its perfectly round (do to uneven distance between it and the shaft causing it to be out of round in relation to the shaft) otherwise it cause premature brash wear or even sparks (voltage surges)/bad power transfer (higher resistance) ect. You could improvise the grinding by rotating it with a drill while mounted in housing and using dremel or sand paper on flat surface touching one part of it as it rotates. Something along those lines because they really look crooked even to naked eye. Both this things can NOT be dedacted unless measured while rotor is running. Anytime you work on ROTATING mass you have to make sure its not out of round and electormagnetsam depends on EVEN gap so the gaps matter. (Not sure what the tolerances are) Such mistake bring the whole job in question. You might get lucky but those are the things to consider if you want it to be 100% by the book. Hope I wasn't to harsh.

    • Thankfully I have the means. A micrometer confirms the margins to within less than a millimeter (0.7mm, which will do) but this unit is self centering in any event, assuming you torque the bolts evenly. Its hard to get wrong. The voltage speed spikes in that case are down to the variable speed drill - a proper test will be done on the engine at a steady rpm.

    • @@projectpenafiel-e36fixit92 do those little hold down bars have a ledge that helps gap the stator? i have a valeo unit im contemplating rebuilding myself because i bought a reman and it came bad from the seller and my current one has decent brushes and slip rings but the bearings are whining really bad.
