(February 22, 2020) Tyson "The Gypsy King" Fury defeated Deontay "The Bronze Bomber" Wilder by seventh-round stoppage to capture the WBC Heavyweight Championship Saturday night headlining a historic mega PPV event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
"A big shout out to Deontay Wilder," said Fury. "He came here tonight and he manned up and he really did show the heart of a champion.I hit him with a clean right that dropped him and he got back up. He is a warrior. He will be back. He will be champion again. But I will say, the king has returned to the top of the throne!"
"Things like this happen," said Wilder. "The best man won tonight, but my corner threw in the towel and I was ready to go out on my shield. I had a lot of things going on heading into this fight. It is what it is, but I make no excuses tonight. I'm a warrior. He had a great performance and we will be back stronger."
The highly anticipated rematch was the most eagerly awaited heavyweight fight in decades after their controversial split draw in 2018. After an unprecedented promotion, the two heavyweight giants traded leather in the middle of the ring in front of a sold out crowd of 15,816.
While both men landed good shots in the first two rounds, Fury broke through in round three with a right hook that put Wilder down late in the round. While Wilder was able to make it through the round and continue fighting, his legs appeared weakened and in round five Fury scored another knockdown, this time with a body shot.
Referee Kenny Bayless deducted a point from Fury late in round five, but it didn't stop Fury from coming forward and continuing to use his height and weight advantage to push Wilder around the ring. In round seven, Fury had Wilder cornered and unloaded with a series of power punches that prompted Wilder's corner to stop the bout, which the referee officially did at 1:39 of the round.
According to CompuBox, Fury was the busier and more effective puncher, out throwing Wilder 267 to 141 and out landing him 82 to 34, including big fifth and sixth rounds where he landed 16 and 14 power punches respectively.

  • Watching this again, there's so much to digest. In round 6, you could tell the ref knew Wilder was done for. During each breakup, you can see him examining Wilder to make sure he could still fight. Also, kudos to Wilder's team for protecting him against himself. To lose this fight AND your hearing, would have haunted Wilder for years to come. And, at the end of the day, his team will be accountable to Wilder's wife and children. That's an enormous amount of pressure. They saw him in danger and called it.

    • Well… the sportsmanship part didn’t last long. I want to like Wilder, but he’s since complained a lot about Tyson cheating and using illegal gloves and whatnot. If he really believes that is true then I guess I shouldn’t hold it against him, but it seems extremely unlikely. Even in the face of those accusations, Fury has continued to praise Wilder for his boxing. It just kind of sucks when something like that happens as once that kind of speculation is out there, it’s out there, even if it’s untrue. Either way they’re both generational talents.

    • Wilder's a strange case in my mind. I truly feel like he's a genuinely good person at heart but I feel like he hasn't really had too much experience with loss in his life, so I hope that he has been healing after his difficult experiences with Fury. I wish that he didn't entertain a certain fan base in entertaining such ugly and baseless accusations towards Fury. I really believe that once he can be at peace with everything that happened, he will be a better man for it. Sometimes losing can be a force for good if you digg what I mean. No matter what some people may feel about Fury, you have to admit that he knows how to box with the best of'm. By the way if by chance someone who doesn't know what Fury said about Wilder, he said some words of encouragement towards Wilder even after Wilder said some insulting things about Fury. He said that he believes in Daeontay Wilder and that "you can do it champ!" This time Wilder is bulking up power lifting then hitting pads after weight training trying to not gas with Fury's weight leaning on him and wrestling him.

    • The most important thing you forgot - The tampered gloves The other thing - Pro photos taken at event of said tampered gloves show finger and knuckle outlines pressed on front of gloves, where if padding was present is impossible and never seen duplicated before or after in any fight Last thing - Fury's team disconnected cameras inside the locker room, never been done before intentionally during live broadcast Oh and...nah ill leave it there, won't change the outcome or perception of a man who was caught multiple times before this match of cheating, both glove tampering and failed drug tests. Who never showed that type of KO power and all of a sudden he has it? Nope I ain't buying it. But it's boxing so I'm not surprised
