A great Barbel session on the Wye, using a split cane fishing rod.

Started with a Daiwa 503 fixed spool reel, after catching a nice Chub and a Barbel I changed to a Relum centrepin, went on to catch another Chub and four more Barbel. Phone call off my brother interrupted by a hard fighting Barbel!!!! All fish caught on 18mm SG1 boilies from 3 Foot Twitch Specialist Baits, over lots of Impact Particle mix.

  • Lovely to appreciate someone else fishing with a proper fishing rod. Thought I was the only one these day's. Bamboo Alway's WIN'S. Of Course has to be with an Old School Centrepin.👍

    • My first season using a cane rod, I’ve used a pin for quite a while. I haven’t put the cane down since my first fish on it.

    • Perhap's one day shall film some footage. Nothing compares to Split Bamboo. So Majestic, feeling every sensation. Such an Amazing Construction with a grass. Lovely to watch your bend. So powerful, yet so delicate. Every opportunity to fish, even without catching an Absolute Joy. A Most Appreciative Old School Angler.

  • Brilliant you caught all three rod-bending takes on camera! Before I noticed your description of your gear, I thought to myself..."Sheesh, that looks like an old Daiwa reel..." Must admit I've never personally used a pin for ledgering - just close-in float fishing on stillwaters - though I once saw a bloke called Crabtree doing so. Tell me, do you smoke a pipe, and also use par-boiled potatoes instead of boilies? 😉 Enjoyed this a lot - subbed 👍

    • No pipe unfortunately, to be honest everything other than the rod and reel is modern. Line, terminal tackle Boilies pellets and particle. I’ve used a pin for ledgering probably more often than for float fishing.

  • Lovely fishing.. what the cane blank? I'm using a chapman 500 ten ft and a ten ft Hardy both around 1.2oz test. Ok for the smaller venues.

    • It’s a Milward’s 4piece rod, no details other than a serial number and length. But they did make a lot of unnamed rods.

  • Beautiful bend in that rod! What strength line do you use on your cane rod please? Tight lines.

    • Mine are all old ones that I’ve bought very cheaply and refurbished, there are a few people still making the split cane rods. But they’re not cheap, but the price does reflect on the craftsmanship that goes into making one.

  • Is there some naff music going on in the background to spoil the ambience. If so remove it!

    • I was listening to The Hu on my phone when the rod went off, it’s not going to be removed.
