How to make a 1/6 scale Steyr RSO - step by step

Here we have the build video, showing my RC scratch built Steyr RSO from start to finish.
The Steyr RSO (Raupenschlepper Ost/caterpillar east) was a light tracked utility vehicle and prime mover, used by the german military during World War 2. It was based on a 1,5 ton truck from Steyr, hence the truck-like cab. The RSO was noisy and slow, but negotiated the mud, snow and the no-existing roads of the Soviet Union better then the half tracks and lorry's also used by the German army. It was powered by an air cooled V8-petrol engine and was intentionally used as a support vehicle and artillery tractor, but the RSO was also used as a platform for anti tank-guns as well as for anti aircraft-guns.
I find the rounded, almost sad look of the RSO very appealing and interesting, and I wanted to make a vehicle without a turret this time. This was a fun and pretty straight-forward build, with the cab as an obvious peak.
If you want to see it in action, check out my previous videos! Thank for watching!

  • This is an Example of Model Building and R/C combined... the result is what can only be described as an Art that is seldom appreciated, yet should be Admired more often... even by those of us that lack the same skills and capabilities. Thank you so much for sharing! Bruno Biava ⚓

    • 🙏... I am a Mariner in my heart and I sometimes volunteer aboard the LST 325 in Evansville, Indiana. She was built as a Weapon of War... but, aboard her I find Peace in the remembrance of all that have given their Lives in Conflict... and the Contributions of so many people on both sides of that Conflict that still allow us to live in a World so far removed from the Conflict that they endured. Your Modeling helps bring Honor and Awareness to the Souls lost in the Conflict of War... and move me towards Prayers for Greater Understanding so that their Sacrifice is remembered... and that We may learn how important it is to not allow Confrontations between Individuals become Conflicts among Groups resulting in Wars that only Cost the Lives of the Innocent People that are sent to Fight. May God Bless You for reminding me to both Pray and Give Thanks, Bruno ⚓

  • Wow, just WOW. I love the combination of new tech (3D printing) and old school workmanship with files, hammers and an anvil. Can I ask what material you are printing with for the structural parts such as wheels, sprockets, track parts, etc? The chain drive looks like bicycle chain, where do find the gears to run the motors to the drive sprockets? Thank you for sharing your work, I am looking forward to watching all of your videos!

    @frankdaniels2626@frankdaniels26263 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you! Yes, I quite like the mix of techniques - it's fun to not 3D-print everything and do some real modelling too. :) The chain is a bicycle chain and the sprockets are fixed gear or single-speed sprockets bought from bicycle internet stores. The plastic sprockets are jockey-wheels from a mountainbike gear shifter. Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for watching!

  • Amazing workmanship! ... One design flaw I'd like to see rectified, and that is the way the Tilt is held or affixed in the box. Did Steyr actually install it that way? I have owned a few 1:1 VW T1 and T2 Pickup Trucks, both Sinka's and DoKa's and know the use of the side gates is the handiest feature of all. I would like to see the Tilt affixed to the bed and the back of the cab of the Steyr so the Tilt could stay in place even if the gates are all flopped down. I have bought a stock Tilt frame and made my own and both attach to the bed and the back of the cab. This is a niggling comment and please don't take it as a criticism, because I am in awe of attention to detail in bringing this rather obscure beast to life. I wish I had half your talent. Keep up the great work!

    @mestapho2011@mestapho20112 жыл бұрын
    • Hi! My experience is that plywood is very stiff and durable thanks to its multi layer construction. I'm sure you can build with MDF as well, but plywood seem to work well, since it has cross-wise fibres, compared to the MDF. However, it wasn't a deliberate choice more than some inspiration from Rctankcombat.com Those guys use plywood with great results. I must agree - it's my favourite model too!

  • Do you make your cad files from a 1/35 kit or do you have access to the blueprints?

    @dge4560@dge45602 жыл бұрын
    • Hi! I make my own CAD-models in FreeCad. I sometimes buy a 1/35 scale plastic model to look at, but mostly I find suitable blueprints on the internet. That, and a lot of reference pics.

  • Hello, I was wondering where you got dimensions for the parts here. I've been planning on making a 1:1 replica for reenactments since they're so rare, but wasn't sure if the 1:35 model was close enough to properly get measurements from.

    @volkermordinc.8822@volkermordinc.88225 жыл бұрын
    • Hi! I struggled with the dimensions. It seemed that all blueprints found on the internet gave different measurements and official numbers did not match the blueprints. I also contacted Technik Museum Sinsheim in Germany to confirm the L/W/H (they replied: ~4200/1800/2200 mm. However, it differs from other public sources). I finally went with one drawing that seemed about right, compared to the Italeri 1/35 scale mode, but since this is a hand-made model, I am sure some of the parts are more or less accurate. It sounds like a very interesting project you are up to! There is a guy in Norway restoring a RSO, maybe he could provide you with more info. Good luck! facebook.com/groups/321790801362585/about/

    • @@builtbyWikander Thanks, I'll look into it! I believe there is one in the states, I may try to get in contact with the owner for some measurements. For now, I may get the Italeri 1:35 and use it as a base and go from there. If I make any progress, I'll keep you posted.
