How to make a 1/6 scale Steyr RSO - step by step
Here we have the build video, showing my RC scratch built Steyr RSO from start to finish.
The Steyr RSO (Raupenschlepper Ost/caterpillar east) was a light tracked utility vehicle and prime mover, used by the german military during World War 2. It was based on a 1,5 ton truck from Steyr, hence the truck-like cab. The RSO was noisy and slow, but negotiated the mud, snow and the no-existing roads of the Soviet Union better then the half tracks and lorry's also used by the German army. It was powered by an air cooled V8-petrol engine and was intentionally used as a support vehicle and artillery tractor, but the RSO was also used as a platform for anti tank-guns as well as for anti aircraft-guns.
I find the rounded, almost sad look of the RSO very appealing and interesting, and I wanted to make a vehicle without a turret this time. This was a fun and pretty straight-forward build, with the cab as an obvious peak.
If you want to see it in action, check out my previous videos! Thank for watching!

This is an Example of Model Building and R/C combined... the result is what can only be described as an Art that is seldom appreciated, yet should be Admired more often... even by those of us that lack the same skills and capabilities. Thank you so much for sharing! Bruno Biava ⚓
Thank you so much for the kind words! 🙏
🙏... I am a Mariner in my heart and I sometimes volunteer aboard the LST 325 in Evansville, Indiana. She was built as a Weapon of War... but, aboard her I find Peace in the remembrance of all that have given their Lives in Conflict... and the Contributions of so many people on both sides of that Conflict that still allow us to live in a World so far removed from the Conflict that they endured. Your Modeling helps bring Honor and Awareness to the Souls lost in the Conflict of War... and move me towards Prayers for Greater Understanding so that their Sacrifice is remembered... and that We may learn how important it is to not allow Confrontations between Individuals become Conflicts among Groups resulting in Wars that only Cost the Lives of the Innocent People that are sent to Fight. May God Bless You for reminding me to both Pray and Give Thanks, Bruno ⚓
Congratulations - what a masterful build! It´s impressive to see how you´ve embraced new technology and techniques without losing sight of the value of more traditional model making skills and materials.
Thank you for those kind words! Glad you enjoyed it!
oh man , these models are insanely cool

Wow!! A really amazingly well presented video of a superb build. Very well done!!
Thank you very much!
The small details are outstanding
Thanks man! 🙏
Amazing work
Wow, this is completely crazily great!
Thank you!
Amazing work! Those tiny working door handles are fantastic. Love the dirt wipe effect on the windshield too.
Thanks a lot, and thanks for watching! I actually thought of doing the cab without working doors at first, but that would have been a bit dull. Glad I chose to have them working. 😊
@@builtbyWikander Thanks for sharing your talent with everyone. I'm happy I found your channel.👍
Superb build! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I just keep watching this over and over and over, trying to work my nerve up to try something like this- it si an INSANE LEVEL Of True Skill and Actual, OLD WORLD Craftsmanship. Well Done. PLEASE DO MORE !! YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION !!

Your workmanship is outstanding that man , how I wish I possessed your skills . BRAVISSIMO MAESTRO 👌👏👌
Thank you very much! 🙏
That’s really nice
Wow impressive skills , both new and old .
Thank you!
Wow, just WOW. I love the combination of new tech (3D printing) and old school workmanship with files, hammers and an anvil. Can I ask what material you are printing with for the structural parts such as wheels, sprockets, track parts, etc? The chain drive looks like bicycle chain, where do find the gears to run the motors to the drive sprockets? Thank you for sharing your work, I am looking forward to watching all of your videos!
Thank you! Yes, I quite like the mix of techniques - it's fun to not 3D-print everything and do some real modelling too. :) The chain is a bicycle chain and the sprockets are fixed gear or single-speed sprockets bought from bicycle internet stores. The plastic sprockets are jockey-wheels from a mountainbike gear shifter. Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video!!! 😉
You're welcome! 😄
incredible, top job.
Thanks a lot, man!

So the Wife taught you how to sew, eh!?! ;) Kudos on your werk - it helped me with my 1/35 Italeri projekt. Respekt
I have sewn since I was 17. 😎 That's cool, man - nice to see it's not only large scale models that find my material useful!
Dang! You're good.
Thank you! 🙏

@@dojianz7714 Nice, thats a cool tank. Good luck!
Erik your RSO is fantastic! I like the use of wood for materials. I was skeptical of a wood cab, but you nailed it perfect. It looks great. Would you consider sell wheels and tracks? Super job, enjoyed your AMX as well, but RSO is a favorite of mine.
Hi, thank you! Yes, it's a quirky little machine. Haven't figured out a good strategi regarding selling anything yet, but we'll see. Thanks for watching!
WOW P*E*R*F*E*C*T Modeling!!!! Wahnsinns Modell,da passt alles.......
Danke! Thank you!
wonderful skillS
Thank you!
That's very kind of you, thanks a lot! 🙏
Nice work! i wish my hand just the same as you.respect from China.
Thank you!
Super !!!!
Thanks!
Awesome job looks so real 🔵🔵🔵👍👍👍😀😀😀🔵🔵🔵
Thank you! 🙌 Yeah, this is probably my favourite model!
Excellent!!! Such wonderful attention to detail! (P.S. -- Invading squirrels and stray cats beware! 😜)
Haha, yeah, they better watch out! 😆
Amazing workmanship! ... One design flaw I'd like to see rectified, and that is the way the Tilt is held or affixed in the box. Did Steyr actually install it that way? I have owned a few 1:1 VW T1 and T2 Pickup Trucks, both Sinka's and DoKa's and know the use of the side gates is the handiest feature of all. I would like to see the Tilt affixed to the bed and the back of the cab of the Steyr so the Tilt could stay in place even if the gates are all flopped down. I have bought a stock Tilt frame and made my own and both attach to the bed and the back of the cab. This is a niggling comment and please don't take it as a criticism, because I am in awe of attention to detail in bringing this rather obscure beast to life. I wish I had half your talent. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man! Do you mean the pipe-structure that holds the rear canvas? I think I freebased a bit on that one, have to consolidate my books. ☺
I don't understand why you have so few subscriptions... I wish you many, many more ;)
That's kind of you, thanks!
Hallo, i'm fascinated!! I try to build my own RSO 1:10 - i know how much work it is to plan so many details. the chain looks perfekt. you gave me an incentive to continue with my model. maybe they could post some pictures. thank you
Hi there and thank you! Awesome that you are building a RSO, it's such a cool vehicle. Best of luck, and check out builtbywikander on IG for more pics!
wow super :)
Thank you!
Magnifique
Thank you!
Erik, love the work. Are the filed for the tracks an wheels available?
Thank you! Not planning on releasing any files at the moment.
I'm watching this and thinking ok this is awesome but maybe i could 3d model some of those parts and print them. Then he sculpts the cab. Lol. Nice work.
Haha, thanks. 😊 And yes, a lot of the stuff I build by hand is probably printable, but I really enjoy the old school part of the project. Thanks for watching!
@@builtbyWikander You are clearly a craftsman!
perfectly
Thank you!
Very 😎 👍
🙏
Wahnsinn....!
Outstanding work 👌 I just got to ask .. Would you ever make another one to sell ?
Thank you! 🙏 Not sure, actually - they take a bit of time to make. 😊
Love to get my hands on thedrawings and dimensions
Hi, I model all my 3D-parts from drawings and measurements I find on the internet. If I need to, I buy a 1/35 scale plastic model as well. I'm using FreeCad as CAD software.
Outstanding! Did you generate the files from which the running gear was printed yourself?
Thank you! Yes, I made them in FreeCad, a free to use software. Perfect for drawing mechanical parts. Thanks for watching!
Started my 1.35 scale Das werk Dragon kit I've gotnthe flaps on the front grill as kits weren't accurate enough loads wee extras love the RSO this is great work how are your tracks holding up? Still think another one or 2 links you Would take that tension off what is it on the real thing 70 per side?
Hey man, thanks for watching! The tracks are doing great, and need a bit of tension to stay on the sprockets during Sharp turns. I'm working on a set on new tracks that looks a bit more scale.
Just amazing !!! What the dimensions of the bicicle gears ? I'm working on a truck project
Thank you! The gear on the drill is the small plastic gear from a rear derailleur and the drive shaft gears are 14 or 15 teeth singel speed-gears. You can basically use all kinds of gears to get the speed and gearing you like.
Wow great build. Can I ask, where yo got your hinges for the bed please?
Thank you! I made the hinges in FreeCad and printed them out on my 3D-printer.
@@builtbyWikander thanks . I am really jealous of the skills you have
👏👏👏são Paulo, Brasil!
🙏
Very F’n cool, nice job, what would you charge someone to build one minus radio controls
Hey man, thanks! I'm not building on request, since they take a lot of time to make, but thanks. 🙏
@@builtbyWikander how hard would it be to 3D the cab and associated parts? Need a bigger printer I’m guessing
@@49BigPoppa I have tried to make the cab in FreeCad, but it's not handling the curved shapes very well... I'm sure it's doable with the right software and a bigger printer.
why do you use plywood vs MDF? I use MDF as it's easier to work with. But i'm guessing this holds up better to getting wet and such.. thanks for letting me know. Awesome build.. this is one of my fav of yours.
Hi! My experience is that plywood is very stiff and durable thanks to its multi layer construction. I'm sure you can build with MDF as well, but plywood seem to work well, since it has cross-wise fibres, compared to the MDF. However, it wasn't a deliberate choice more than some inspiration from Rctankcombat.com Those guys use plywood with great results. I must agree - it's my favourite model too!
@@builtbyWikander Thanks for the link friend. I will definitely check it out. Hope to see more builds from you in the future. A Jad would be a pretty sweet build.
Do you make your cad files from a 1/35 kit or do you have access to the blueprints?
Hi! I make my own CAD-models in FreeCad. I sometimes buy a 1/35 scale plastic model to look at, but mostly I find suitable blueprints on the internet. That, and a lot of reference pics.
Hello, I was wondering where you got dimensions for the parts here. I've been planning on making a 1:1 replica for reenactments since they're so rare, but wasn't sure if the 1:35 model was close enough to properly get measurements from.
Hi! I struggled with the dimensions. It seemed that all blueprints found on the internet gave different measurements and official numbers did not match the blueprints. I also contacted Technik Museum Sinsheim in Germany to confirm the L/W/H (they replied: ~4200/1800/2200 mm. However, it differs from other public sources). I finally went with one drawing that seemed about right, compared to the Italeri 1/35 scale mode, but since this is a hand-made model, I am sure some of the parts are more or less accurate. It sounds like a very interesting project you are up to! There is a guy in Norway restoring a RSO, maybe he could provide you with more info. Good luck! facebook.com/groups/321790801362585/about/
@@builtbyWikander Thanks, I'll look into it! I believe there is one in the states, I may try to get in contact with the owner for some measurements. For now, I may get the Italeri 1:35 and use it as a base and go from there. If I make any progress, I'll keep you posted.
@@volkermordinc.8822 👍 Please do, would love to know how it goes.
@ Volkermord - You might want to check with this private collector in the US: facebook.com/thegraebecollection/
what kind of putty do you use and then sand it?
Plastic putty, the kind you repair cars with. I think this was Plastic Padding.
Were do you get your prints?
Do you mean the 3D-printed parts? I have a 3D-printer (made a video of it recently). If you mean the blueprints, I find them online and scale them to he right size.
why do you use drills, when brushed electric motors are readily available for cheap?
Because you get a motor, a battery and a planetary gearbox for next to nothing. Saves a lot of time.
That was awesome job would you ever build and sale one
Thank you! Well, not sure, since they take quite some time to finish. 😊
You really only relise the size in video when your airbrushing it haha! From thinking 1.35 painting them then this next to the airbrush yeh she's a big un!
Yes, but still carry-able despite being a 1/6 scale! 😁
BRAVO !!!! GOOD JOB !!!!! :) 👍🏻 + SUB !!! 😏 Regards - Paul P.
