Whoever came up with the design for Angels in Diablo was a genius. The armor, energy tendril wings and empty void where their head should be is an amazing look that is obviously angelic while remaining distinct from other depictions of angels.
Ironically, we see many catholics today using images from this design thinking its something actually biblical lol
Actual biblical descriptions of angels are way more acid trip than modern angelic depictions. Like a cherub has four faces: human, lion, ox and eagle. ALso they had cloven hooves,legs with no knees, four wings and were accompanied by mechanical wheels covered in eyes. Oh, and they were also on fire and shooting lightning everywhere. So...different

I love watching the humans actually do "well" against the demons for awhile. So many times in diablo humans just get smacked around like they are just annoying gnats. Nice seeing them actually kill shit

That's why it was always a tactic to not fully surround your enemy as they will fight to the death leave a small way out so they flee desperate to survive. This cinematic was dog shit.
What a strategist Lilith is. Leaving the battlefield because she knew Inarius' emotions would take over and that he would follow her wherever she went. Also like how you can see her just slightly open her palms right before Inarius stabbed her, cuz she knew this wouldn't be the end for her

She's definitely smart, she made Inarius look pretty stupid. They could have had a battle crazy enough to level that place, but I guess you can just get away with mindgames and a bit of plot armor.
She had mind-controlling tongue, talking instances into her advantage to their relationship situation.

It's literally just a bunch of special effects and creature designs. Making an entire movie you have to sit through just to watch the cool SFX scenes has been a thing at least since the days of Harryhausen. Maybe this is an improvement. If the story is there just as an excuse for the visuals (or the demon mass slaughter as is the case with a Diablo game) why not just skip to those bits?

The moment when Inarius dies... the divine exaltation evaporates, the light dims and you realize that you stand in the middle of hell and there is no hope for you. What a sh***y moment to be a crusader.
The saddest part is Inarius never gave a shit about them and was only using them, but I guess that's a pretty fitting end for these religious zealots

Technically speaking, these are Knights Penitent, not Crusaders. Crusaders are an elite force of Paladins and serve the church of Zakarum, and are not in a great place in the current era of Diablo. The Knights Penitent are soldiers of the Cathedral of Light, who worship Inarius. After their crusade into Hell tho, they probably aren't doing well either. I just point this out because in Diablo's lore, Crusaders and Paladins are a very specific group, not just any warrior crusading against Hell is a Crusader.

Inarius' death made me feel so uneasy. He's a huge asshole but I still felt a shred of sympathy for him, that was brutal. Voice actor delivered the emotions incredibly well.
He was tortured for an eternity in Hell, it broke him mentally, which is why he's so desperate to go home, like a lost child regretting that they'd run away from home.

I have no sympathy. The dude wants to buy his way into heaven by genociding humanity once he's done killing Lillith. Only part that made me uneasy was the part where, much like Imperius, we didn't get to slap the smug off his incorporeal face.

I love how badass archangels are and I hate how they are constantly being trashed in every diablo. But hey without that there will no need of a hero for saving everyone ass.
Yeah, I think my one complaint with how angels are usually treated is it seems like they're less powerful than their demonic counterparts. That said, Inarius's depiction here is absolutely incredible, and he only goes down because he's distracted by grief.
Well it's sad they always treated archangels as weaklings and got trashed by demons even at the movies or comics, novels, books, of course humans love demons and satan nowadays that's why, but archangels are much stronger thou, not the ones pathetic and dumb, but higher than darkness and demons.

Well, canonical history dictates that the ONLY reason Hell hadn't straight squashed the Heavens was that they were horribly divided in their goals and intrest, while the heavens were united against them. In 3, we were shown just how outmatched the heavens truly were, and if not for the MC, they wouldve lost then and there. Course, Malthael just HAD to screw them over further and free the Evils once more, and this time, most likely, permanently, as I dont think anyone still exsist with the knowledge to create new Soulstones, let alone the Black.
@@Animefan5890 The angels and demons unapologetically embody the aspects they represent to their strength and to their faults. The prime evils keep getting defeated and sealed away only to reform over time to try and do the same thing that got them wrecked to begin with. Tyrael is probably the only higher being that has had any divergence from his aspect.

The land does no deny his power. It's the gravity and might of Inarius himself. He is like a moving sun with his own gravitional field.
Inarious was way weaken than I thought he’d be. The moment he had to kill demons with his hands, taking several seconds to do so, surprised me. I thought he was going to just incinerate the minions with his aura. He should’ve stayed back with his army. I suppose that’s why Lilith lured him away. She knew she could take him alone.
Inarius probably gained power by the faith of his adherents. By luring him away from his army, Lilith deprived Inarius from a big boon to his strength, and then on top of that she knew what strings to pull to unravel him mentally, and since she's a greater demon she already gets boosted from the fact that she's in her home turf of hell. Not sure at all if this is canon at all, but it's how I interpreted the scene

Man the amount of time and detail they put into these cutscenes, the way The light shows the guys nose in his helmet, the way inarius's light curls to fit the door when he enters. Exactly what I was thinking, that battle formation and usage of massive spears is just incredible, and the music and animation remind me of LOTR battles for some reason. It's especially badass because it's so unexpected, you don't see how Reverend Mother Prava (the bald black priest woman) will survive out in front of the shield wall, only for those massive lances to shoot out.

@@Gleebi knowing the story, it nearly makes me cry. Inarius and Lilith use to be lovers, and created humanity by procreating. Despite all that, Inarius is planning on murdering Lilith and all of humanity. You can see the grief on her face when she asks about their son.

The way Inarius' hand was shaking after he stabbed Lilith kinda shows that he still loved her in the end amd that he shows some remorse, but in the end he was driven by his pride and desire to return to the Heavens where he felt he belonged

Imagine if Inarius had abandonded his quest for false vengeance and accepted that Humanity was his true kin. He could've raised a force so powerful in the latent nephalems that he could've become a 3rd side in the eternal conflict.
Hes an idiot who hates the world he created. Tyrael sheds his wings to become mortal, while this mf kills his son, goes to hell because of some made up prophecy told him he could go to heaven.
Dude was too arrogant and declined as a result. It didn't help that being imprisoned for years weakened him severely.

The messed up thing is those crusaders were doomed from the start. If Inarius had succeeded and killed Lilith, and gained the forgiveness of the high heavens, he would just have left his army to die. He never genuinely cared about them, they were tools for him to kill Lilith so he could go home. The moment he had a chance to do so, he would've taken it and left his followers to die.
Because it was pride and vanity that led his crusade not justice.
"Heavens, protect me!" the despair and hopelessness in the voice are astonishing
When i was playing the game and came across all the dead knights, I thought "wow it would have been really cool if they showed us the battle" and then later this cinematic played, and it did not disappoint.
This scene never stops being freaking amazing, even as it's so sad--Inarius was so full of his dumb self that he condemned so many people to death for what turned out to be nothing.
Thats the amazing thing for me. No matter how many people you sacrifice, it wont give you a place in heaven but rather in hell when you are so selfish to use others as pawns. Truly amazing script (the game itself is debatable atm)

Everyone except his sycophants, son included, kept making it clear he won’t get what he wants no matter how much he tries to murder Lilith. After all it was the High Heavens who handed him over to be tortured to begin with.

@@richardashendale922 My interpretation is that by then, he simply injured her because he started doubting himself, that the High Heavens will never take him back, so he wanted to see if they will even give him a sign that this is the right thing, but when he injured her and nothing happened, he started finally breaking down.
Shields Wall on a straight path could have been an easy fight, but Inarius tried to be clever ?

To be fair if she died like he planned he woulda just came back out and whooped ass some more, but she played dead and gave him a crisis of faith.
It wasnt an easy fight though, if you look closely you can see that the spear wall was already in the process of getting overwhelmed (many fell back to their swords). Plus the more powerful demons/creatures were hitting the frontlines and disrupting the wal.

It's clear to see that Inarius is a very skilled and experienced warrior but let's his blind devotion to the high heavens get in the way of what really matters. He allows that flaw to get the best of him which leads to his army losing hope upon his death.
I LOVE the more modernized rendition of the Macedonian tactic. The sarissa was a tremendously simple, but DEVASTATING weapon. The use of it here was incredibly well done. There was a reason Alexander the Great could never fight defensively- the sarissa was incapable of being used in a defensive manner since it required the army to always keep pushing forward to gore more enemies. You need to seek them out to skewer them. This was single-handedly the best moment of the entire story. Nothing even came close to this moment.
Holy shit I just realized that the 300 Spartans could have made this fighting style into a very devastating fighting style if they fought in a back to back style from the middle of hells gates and not moved it would be even more devastating if it was implemented from inside a tunnel through a mountain ( this would negate a arrow rain and catapults)
@@brennanlangless8912 Believe it or not, Spartans did not fight in this manner. Their combat is believe to be more group dynamic. The concept of forming lines like this was not really a thing in Greece at this point. The Macedonians would be the first to really hammer out formation like this so the Spartans wouldn't really have had too much of a difference in the end. The Macedonians didn't use cover to make their advance on the vastly superior Persian forces in both melee and archers. Their tactic was to push forward into the enemy, meat grinder them and keep pushing forward all the while arrows brought them down.
@@vladdracul2379 it’s just a thought on a alternate timeline for how they (the ancient Spartans) might/could have been trained/made use of a fighting style that would have been pretty effective for static fighting in a narrow passage with their brothers watching behind them
The way the knights actually use tactics and teamwork before their (Totally understandable) rout really impressed me- it would have been all too easy for Blizzard to make them mere cannon fodder.

Because blizzard doesn't value its writing anymore. Inarius has always been CLEVER in canon. But apparently he has to be an idiot so that their big strong independent woman can win.
Can't say Im not surprise at how Inarius and his legion of Pale Knight turn out... Heck even the Angiris Council at their prime and the Heavenly Host have a hard time maintaining a stable presence in Burning Hell throughout the Eternal Conflict. Inarius is just their advisor and the Pale Knights aren't even Nephalem, just human in heavy armors. So yeah, lets just charge straight up to the Heart of Hell and fight Legions of Demons right on their hometurf. Im sure that will turn out nicely.
To be honest they were smashing the demons up until the point when Inarius got fucked. At that time their "Hope" got diminished, and they started getting fucked

I really love the attention to detail. The CG looks exactly as it should based off the ingame artstyle. But no matter how devout you are. Melting feet hurt.

In this game he lose to madness and started a path for an inevitable death. He knew (like in war of sin) he would never kill lilith.

This is probably the best cinematic in all of gaming, also right up there with movies. The art direction, character design and performances are the best in the industry. Lilith (who was voiced beautifully) wasn't really the bad guy in this whole game. it was a crazy experience...
I loved Inarius expressions through out the video.
He really sells the performance with how emotive he is.

I imagine after the legion is overrun and defeated, there's a lull in the action. The demons relax, believing in their victory. Suddenly, heavy metal begins to play in the distance. One of the legion henchmen rises, tearing off his armor to reveal doomguy. He proceeds to rip and tear until it's done.

I dont know why but the scene in the game "Soul Reaver" where the protagonist gets his wings ripped off unsettled me(Its just brutal) and always stayed with me. To see it again in this scene further cements my feelings of it.

I think it was more that he was distracted with not earning the approval of the Heavens. Once he realized he wouldn't get it, lost his will. Plus Lillith went right for the critical parts of his wings.

Lilith is one of the most powerful being in hell. Some random behemoth doesn't even compare. Even humans took one down. Inarius was also largely crazy and completely emotionally compromised. Not exactly a stretch that he let his guard down when his ENTIRE purpose for living for thousands of years was shattered. Lilith was both his first and only love as well has his reason to exist.
Before this, my fav sound from Diablo universe was the destruction of the World Stone in the end of LotD(original cutscene!!!!!!), now....now its the sound of church bell, resonating across the entire freaking battlefield. Fkn goosebumps, gaddam

Wings of Liberty: Kerrigan - "Do you hear them, Zeratul? Whispering from the stars, the galaxy will burn with their coming." Zeratul - "Perhaps... but you won't live to see it!" And this is right after Inarius stabbed Big Ugly through the head with the horn of Little Ugly (haven't played Diablo in 15+years), just as Zeratul impaled the hydralisk's big alien noggin with its own severed claw. Eerily familiar cutscene.
I've always appreciated the amorality of the Diablo series - there's no real bad guy or clear cut lines of good and evil. Everyone is terrible in some way or another. Tyrael was a terrible fuck up who accidentally loosed the Prime Evil on the world; Inarius was a narcissist obsessed with his own righteousness; Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto were standard want to spread destruction, fear, and chaos bad guys; Lilith was a somewhat sympathetic big bad. The list goes on, but I think Diablo as a whole does a great job of essentially putting the idea of morality into question when it's sort of lost in the midst of a endless war between natural but opposing forces - the point that they unintentionally make (or maybe it was intentional, who knows, maybe there's a bunch of deeply philosophical writers at Blizzard) is that morality and how one views the story (one could see either side as the villain or both sides or neither side) is entirely personal.

100% false. Diablo and his forces are clearly pirtrayed as spreading senseless destruction in the name of power. Good guys with flaws does not make them neutral or not good. It makes them normal.

In fact, the main boss in Diablo 4 was supposed to be Inarius, not Lilith. Lilith is a character who you rather empathize with because of the loss of her son (yes, she does a lot of bad things along the way, but she does everything for the good). The phrase fits here: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". And Inarius is a narcissistic character who wants to return to his home at any cost.
Does everything for the good? Did we play the same game?
@@harbringar828 For the good is that she wanted to make humanity strong so that she could resist both hell and heaven. Methods - specific. But they can be compared to a vaccine. A vaccine is a smaller version of a virus. Imagine that Lilith and her demons are a smaller version of the Underworld. Lilith set up a mini-hell in Sanctuary to prepare people for the coming of the big-hell.

She was not afraid of being pierced by Inarius' weapons. And in principle, her thoughts are pure in terms of the fact that she wanted to save people. Her only problem was that she saw the salvation of the people in the survival of the fittest.
If you ask me Inarius is a moron, he probably killed his kid for heaven, ruins sanctuary which is the best place and then wonders why would Lilith deceive him. I MEAN, the guy is brainless, he leaves heaven for sanctuary to have something better and then quites at the last moment. To be honest, I'm glad he died.And after he killed his kid to redeem himself in front of the Heavens they didn't even rejoice, he did it for nothing.
