  • The fact that the filming of Helm’s Deep was long, exhausting and hellish in itself, only added to the gritty aesthetic and realism in this battle. Fucking legendary.

    • @@santiagoz.s.1024 GoT is still good. But we have to see the difference. Storytellingwise those two are completely different. While LotR is about epicness and the Giant clash of the evil Force. GoT is more Character driven. the GoT episode relied on suspense and making you anxious. And they did a good Job on that matter. thats why the cinematografic shots of the battles were completely different. In GoT the Battle was merely a toolbut not the Point, while here it was all about the epicness. the directors never cared about having an amazing battle like here it was about the feelings it transported. Just compare the choosen MUsic from both and you see the massive difference.

    • @@santiagoz.s.1024 I'm not arguing that the battle itself was utter shit with no tactic at all. wqhat i mean is the directors didn't really care about that. The never wanted us the feeling we had in the battle of helms deep here. the Battle was merely a tool for where their focus was actually on. the suspense before the battle was done really good and the sad music over the fighting in the end act was impressive aswell. I completely agree on what you say. but i came to the conclusion that wasn't the point of the show all along. the directors wanted to achieve something different and did that part well. seeing the directors commentary on the battle helped me understanding that. Also even the whole enemy army was pointless and the battle itself. that all was made clear all along. It was just about the one character of the Night King all along. Trust me i am not an GoT Fanboy that wants to defend it to my death. but i am trying to understand why it was how it was instead of just saying it was shit. Cause while the battle was ridiculous bullshit, the Episode itself was quite fascinating, wasn't it?

I still love the LOTR movies and they are 100% respectful to the lore and the original work. Do I wish Tom Bombadil, the barrow downs, the scouring of the Shire etc were included. Sure but it would have took at least 4 maybe 5 movies to do that. Now the Hobbit grinds my gears. Making a fairly short book into a trilogy adding tons of characters and things that didn't happen in the book to pad it into a trilogy, it felt like a cash grab. The cinematography was beautiful. I wish they would release a cut of the trilogy condensed and edited into one movie leaving out all the extraneous padding.

    • @@thepieofyourlife4799 Nah, ROP is not 'good' now and never will be. It exists solely to ruin the legacy of Tolkien. Contradicts the LOTR canon and timeline (characters who didn't even meet apparently met according to Amazon) completely, has real-world political messaging shoved into it (Why are there black elves? It doesn’t make sense!!), the acting is terrible ("tHeRe iS a TeMpEsT iN mE"), the shots are awful ('Galadriel' moving down to the side to dodge an arrow while on a horse and then swings at an Orc that isn't even close to her, somehow killing it)… it’s just a disgrace.

Everythings else from the castle model ( 3 of them btw ) to every close-up shot, some decent view of the 2 side fighting is all people & practical use. Event the explosion of the wall was a real, of the small castle model. They only blow it up once, so it was a "one take shot". The "Urukai" just mean "Orc folks" in orcs language, or "black speech".

  • 2:31 thus, the legend is born. This dude is actually the one who started the domino effect, he released the arrow > the war started> the uruk hai losing their mind and started to be aggressive > the rohirrim appeared > Rohan won > Isengard lost > Mordor was the only powerhouse left > Mordor attacked Gondor > Rohan helped gondor, since they won against Isengard (because of this legend) > Gondor and Rohan alliances win the war > Gondor and Rohan distracted Mordor forces> the ring destroyed. All this because of this guy. Legend said if Frodo gave the ring to him, he would attach the ring to his arrow, and fire it straight to the mountain of doom

  • Now this is how you do a great battle scene. First: it's set in a simply structured location. The places this setting has are a few, so that we can easily identify where each shot takes place. It also helps that the movie gives you time to get familiar with where everything is before the action starts. Second: the goal our heroes have is made clear with each segment this battle has. We know why they are doing what they are doing, because we understand what the opposing side is trying to do. Third: the fight is not composed of moments of our heroes doing well coreographed stunts that are there just to look cool. Every action they take has a reason and cause. For example, Legolas doesn't slide down those stairs just because he wanted to show off. He did that because he needed to get there fast, without disturbing his aim. Fourth: the way it's edited to flow from one segment to another without there being a break in the middle. That makes it feel like a real battle is going on and helps us to understand how intense everything is. Those are 4 things that together make this one of the greatest cinematic battle scenes. It's strange how even with today's 300 million dollar budget blockbusters we still don't see anything like this.

Instead every time it cuts away to the Ents being slow and obstinate we are both eager to get back to the fight and right there with Merry and Pippin: "Come on! The good guys are dying, you got to help them!"
