Welcome to Info Spark
In this video, we are going to tell you The Real Story Behind The Courier, the new movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
The Courier is a film that doesn't have to rely on huge explosions, strung out fight scenes or big car chases to sell the drama. It is about the human cost of patriotism and the price you pay for doing something extra-ordinary, breaking the rules for the good of humankind. It follows the story of Greville Wynne who was just an ordinary and unassuming businessman for some of the top industrial manufacturers of the West and was recruited as a covert operative to pass information to the CIA and MI6 from Oleg Penkovsky of the GRU, in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis which was one of the greatest international conflicts in history.
In the 1960's everyone had a very different but personal relationship to the cold war and felt the imminent pressure on a daily basis.
Although The Courier is part fiction/ part fact, it honours the essence of what actually happened...

  • Another worthy film in the filmography of Benedict Cumberbatch.. But some details of the life of the Soviet regime in Russia, the British cannot even imagine, and the Russians are not allowed to advertise it. In fact, the Russian prison is much worse, gentlemen! And to get out of there as an adequate person is a rather rare occurrence. The Russian regime does not differ much from the North Korean regime even now. Cinema is far from life!
