  • Thank you. I'm a volunteer at a summer science camp for kids, and we have like a 'base camp' where we do a random game for no reason. Luckily the teacher today had a box of rockets for us to launch at targets. Like those "100% kid powered" rockets. No one hit a target.

  • A question miss.... what is the students` initial position before starting the activity?

    @misteryos5642@misteryos56423 жыл бұрын
    • You could have students start in a sitting position but this is up to you.

      @eslkidsgames@eslkidsgames3 жыл бұрын
  • So if all the Ss are sitting down and you ask one a question and the student says no, what happens? The student is already sitting down. Conversely the same thing happens if all the Ss are standing up and one answers yes.

    @grahamreid1919@grahamreid19196 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Graham, This activity is best used with questions that are 'yes' or 'no' type answers. You will find that many books for young learners or lower level classes have these type questions or 'true' or 'false' type questions. In this case, students would read or look at a picture. Then you would ask the students the questions one at a time. Students start by sitting or standing and if the answer is 'yes' to stand up or remain standing. If they answer is 'no' then they can remain sitting or sit down. This activity is a great way to cover the content in the book in an active way which in my experience students prefer. The added benefit is that students also get to practice their listening skills. Hopefully this explanation has been clear. If I can clarify anything further, just let me know. Thanks for commenting.

  • Is it all the students stand up if one of them answers yes or just the student answering the question?

    @TheWilly2fly@TheWilly2fly6 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Turbo Meff, In this game all students would stand up if the answer to the questions is 'yes' or they would sit down if the answer was 'no'. You could use a game like this after a reading for example. Students first read a text and then you would ask questions about it. By doing this, you would practice listening skills as well as comprehension. You could alternatively show students an image and then ask questions about the image after it has been removed. This activity is great for young learners as it gives them an opportunity to move and really helps focus them on a task. I hope this helps. Thanks for commenting.

    • ESL Kids Games my problem is I’ve got 30 Chinese university students in a class and can’t really move the desks / seats about without causing chaos and wasting time. I need game that are fun to warm them up that involves them sat at their desk. I can’t really even move them into groups / teams. This game sounds a little flat for me. Standing up and sitting down is ok for kids but my age group is 18 / 19+

      @TheWilly2fly@TheWilly2fly6 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Turbo Meff, yes, this game won't work in your situation. I would recommend the following games: Vocabulary Circle is a simple vocabulary warmer you could use at the start or end of class. You use a soft ball of piece of paper wo revise vocabulary topics: kzhead.info/sun/o65un8-XsYWEa3A/bejne.html Odd one Out would work with lower level students (requires a projector): kzhead.info/sun/m7uCdMucop58jH0/bejne.html Yes, No, Maybe - again works well with lower level students kzhead.info/sun/d8WLgcuAh3OQhac/bejne.html Talk about the picture is great with teens and adults with an intermediate level kzhead.info/sun/etyAltGrbnZvZmg/bejne.html Also Vocabulary Fortunes (requires a projector, though you could print off the following version eslkidsgames.com/2012/08/esl-family-fortunes-game-for-teens.html ) is a great end of class game to practice vocabulary kzhead.info/sun/rMaSj6igsKCkqZs/bejne.html Again, let me know if these don't suit, I'm sure I have more ideas that will work in your context.

  • I dont understand.. Do they have to say yes and stand up??? or only stand up??

    @aracelicg4038@aracelicg40386 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Araceli, They just need to stand up for a 'yes' response and sit down for 'no'. They do not need to say anything. This can be a fun activity for answering yes, no questions about a reading or another similar activity.

  • Why it is important to know your ELL student before beginning to teach them?

    @AmbisyosangBK@AmbisyosangBK4 жыл бұрын
    • Having come to a new country with new students I don't know I can tell you that the more you know, the better you can teach. The first day was a trainwreck as I quickly realised the level I was expecting and the level they were was very different. The first two weeks were a bunch of hit and miss lessons. Now I know my students better and I've realized their English is not as good as I expected, but better than it seemed at first and generally they could be a bit shy. I had to adapt my level as well as change my style to a more group approach, focusing on victory, especially if a student needed to stand up alone, simple rewards, lots of fun recap activities like crosswords and words searches. You don't have to know their intimate personality traits, but the more you know the better you'll do as a teacher too.

  • Here's where these types of games need to get more specific and I'm not picking on you: if the kids don't yet know what yes and no means, how are they supposed to understand the question "do you like chocolate?". When I see demos of these games, everything is always like clockwork. I would give my left arm for a video showing what the teacher does if the children start just staring blankly or don't follow the instructions properly or aren't really retaining anything. Because if you're a beginner teacher like me, that is what is most likely going to happen.

    @RobertBalto@RobertBalto7 жыл бұрын
    • Teaching is a process. You have to adjust to your students' levels and find activities and methods that work for your students' level. If they don't understand yes or no, you should teach them that first. If they stare blankly try to make the class more interactive. Children have a short attention span, the only thing you can do is slowly gradually train to lengthen their attention span. It all seems hard in the beginning, experience is the best teacher.

    • For basic English beginner students, this is a very challenging game. It's not about yes or no, it's about understanding the questions. Imagine if I had to play this game with you, but in swahili and all you have is a dictionary. Not so boring anymore. Please get out of your little bubble. With a mindset like that I can't imagine you would be a very good ESL teacher.
