Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

For anyone interested: Lilli Schwarzkopf of Germany took silver in the end. She was disqualified for stepping on the line but this was a mistake as the person actually stepping on the line was Russia's Kristina Savitskaya. So Schwarzkopf received silver in the end. Lydumyla Yosypenko of Ukraine who came in fourth was disqualified after the games for doping.
Lol did you notice that the crowd cheered for everyone. But when it was Russia's turn, the public went silent hahaha!
I was wondering why, i couldn't see it. Lilli's and Jessica's determinism and found energy at the end was amazing.
Schwarzkopf means Blackhead
American here, had never heard of Jessica Ennis before, had somehow managed to watch this live in the US, and still 10 years later it's one of the most incredible sports moments I've ever seen. Just the noise as she came down the final straight; and most of the time you can't say this without it being complete BS, but she literally DECIDED TO WIN. An all-time Olympic moment.
19:18 for Jess' heat and the gold
Thanks!
@@tanishaparamba5806 thank you!
Thank you
Every time I see this it makes me want to cry. She is 100% my idol :)
Thatsright Murs IDOLITOR! On a serious level, Jessica is a lady worthy of the highest respect. I too cried watching this.
+Paige S One of the sins that God really is offended about is IDOLATRY! He hates it. He is Maker ,Creator, Ruler. M
j Kelly not everyone’s religious
j Kelly shut up.
Makes me want to cry that it was 8 years ago Where's all that gone
This is a true champion...doesn't need to win the race to get the medal, but her professionalism and determination shines through, she gets herself out wide and sprints for the line for 1st place and to win it in style. Go Jess!!!
Just like she did in '09 in Berlin!
I’d be the exact same, I wouldn’t be able to win whilst not giving it my all. I’d sprint even if I didn’t have to.
Yes Abigail Williams, she ran faster than my very fast Ziggy and China. What a great day for Dame Jessica ! November 2021
Nice one Abigail, rewatching this after the 2022 euros and Jessica did this magnificently, finding the will to win the 800 meters in great style even though she didn't have to, so proud of her! great victory!
I adore Jess, she epitomes everything an athlete should be, she is a great role model for kids, she works hard and is such a great competitor, athletics people will miss her dearly when she retires.
***** ***** you guys are so stupid, how many people get away with a crime ? thousands, just because a he was found not guilty it doesn't mean to say he is innocent, as they say, there's no smoke without fire
***** oh I agree, I never said he was guilty, just there's no smoke without fire, I know some girls go looking for footballers and stars, maybe she felt disgusted with herself and decided to cry rape, we will never know the truth
***** I'm kind of familiar with the case, but not all the facts, see this is where I think the lines are blurred when it comes to this type of rape case, if you are drunk how can you consent ? well from what your saying this girl should be charged with making false claims, his life will never be the same again now
I am your biggest fan. RIDA
My name is Rida i am 5 years old
Still brings a tear to my eye watching this. The British media had hyped her up so much as the favourite and I was so happy she won. What an atmosphere in the stadium and the noise when she came round that final bend and pulled ahead was amazing!
Jessica Ennis is such a badass. :D So much skill in so many events.
I can't wait till 2020 and 2024 when we see the athletes who have been inspired by the athletes like jess mo and usain it could be a truly wonderful era for athletics
1234 5678 eeeek were nearly here!
1 more year
unfortunately the Tokyo summer Olympics games is held in 2021 😂
Who’s here in 2020??✌🏼
Bet you didn't expect anything like this to happen
She broke her ankle in 2008 and 4 yrs later shes a champion this inspires me to never give up
My favourite moment of the Olympics. I was jumping up and down in my living room as she sprinted down the home straight. Well done Jess.
As far as I'm concerned, this was the most moving end to any race ever in athletic history.
Wish I could have been there 10 years ago today but I was glued to the telly at home.Incredible 2 days by Jess after all the hype and expectation leading up to the event.
Super saturday. Still get such a feeling seeing jess, mo and greg Rutherford winning on the same night
An Amazing night
Me too - 4th August 2012 was the best night.
I was only watching in the pub at home, but yes, what a night!
Isn't Greg doing something different like a winter Olympic event ( I maybe wrong but just have a look on Google).
It’s so crazy watching this in 2020 with Ennis-Hill and Thiesen-Eaton retired, Daphne Schippers now exclusively a sprinter (and one of The Greats, at that!), and hopefully 🤞🏼 a HUGE battle brewing beetween Johnson-Thompson and Nafi Thiam for the postponed games in 2021. The London games were maybe my favorites of all times. We got both breadth AND depth of coverage here in the States. There were so many good sportsmanship moments. It really was a Games for the ages.
just watched Kat win her medal so fancied a look back at this
Me too haha. I was so delighted to see Kat get the medal she finally deserves.
@@Aaron-he3qd Yes, she worked hard on her weakest disciplines and conquered her demons., It will be tough in Tokyo but she should medal but not sure if it will be gold, I hope so but she has two strong rivals.
I vividly remember KJT's 100M hurdles at London 2012, when her name was announced The stadium erupted with such noise and the bewilderment and joy on KJT's face was a sight to behold ( This was about 10:30 on the Friday morning) . I hope she emulates Denise and Jessica and wins gold in Paris
Don't know why, but I had to come back and look at this again in 2020. Remarkable performance. Digging deep to win a race she didn't have to win. Great stuff.
Great memories of 04/08/2012 ...Super Saturday...We were there from Sheffield at the end of the 100m straight next to the Olympic flame to support a "Great Sheffielder" Hardly remember the race but the atmosphere will stay with us... FOREVER.
I'm not gonna lie - cried watching this ..
Yeah it was fantastic. Got to admit I have a bit of a crush for Jessica Ennis as well!
@@jamesknox64 She’s fit af
@@ShoaibKhan-bz5qm she was an Olympic athlete of cos she was fit duhhh
No home athlete had more pressure on them to deliver than Jessica Ennis & she delivered and more! From the hurdles on the first morning when she set a new Heptathlon Record to winning her heat of the 800m, she won by over 300 points to the silver medallist. THAT's what I'd call a result! :-)
Watching it again makes me feel like i'm watching for the first time again.
She's so humble. Good luck in Rio Jessica!❤️
She's so not British.

YES JESS YES....I'm a nine year old girl and I'm a runner I've competed in mini athletes competitions and I am in many running clubs I want to be like you one day and got the olympics
I used to be a runner, don't know why I stopped. If you've got passion for it, you can do anything.
@ Jessica Ennis hill, you can achieve your dream with hard work and dedication, and never let anybody tell you that you can't do it, good luck in your quest 😊
DarklordDaUnicorn DaThird good luck
Aww
All the best!
I really hope Ennis wins Sports Personality on Sunday . Phenomenal performance under immense pressure . For me the stand-out performance of the games . What an athlete she is.
Good Luck to Jessica & Katarina at Rio 2016.
They did well Jess came second and katarina 5th or 6th
i remember i almost cried watching this
jessica ennis is my role model she has been through so mjch from bullying amd everything i believ that all jessica enmis fans should read her book as it is the most inspiring book i have ever red and she is trully outstanding xxxxx
It was said at the time that in the dressing room prior to this race; Jess overheard two of the other girls discussing her. 'she'll win the gold, but she won't win this race'. Gritting her teeth Jess said to herself 'oh yes I f-ing will'. 10years on, I still love her.
I love watching these because I am a heptathlon athlete and I am 13 years old. My personal best in 800m is 2.19 minutes 💘
Jessica make me cry every time
When she kicked off at the end, amazing xx :)
Jess, wow, just wow… even all these years later. 🇬🇧🥰🇬🇧🥰🇬🇧🥰 Our forever poster girl!
I remember watching this. I was hysterical - 3 gold medals for Britain! (I'm from Britain)
What part of Britain ?
Everybody in Sheffield is so proud! Well done Jess:-)
I just watched Jess interviewed on Graham Norton. What a simply wonderful advertisement for British sport. She is a star in the league of Lord Coe. I sincerely hope she grasps this opportunity and goes on to much bigger things. She obviously has the talent and the wit and the drive. Well done Jess.
She's an amazing inspirational woman, Summer 2012, amazing time in London.
Jessica's 800mtr win was the highlight of the London Olympics. She is a legend.
How much I would have given to have been in the crowd that night. It would have been such an amazing atmosphere!
I remember when she walked into the stadium to pick up her Gold. The crowd went crazy, I thought the roof was gonna come off. I wish there was a clip of it on here. True golden girl of the Olympics. So many of our athletes had the Olympics of their lives, but her medal was my favourite.
Love her. Watch it from time to time to have my spirits lifted. love from Tbilisi.
Tokyo 2020 and still watching this clip. What an inspiration.
What a warrior. She's incredible.
So glad I went to see this - an amazing day for British sports.
Best Games Ever.Thank You London.God Job,Sir Coe!
Listen to that crowd... love that woman.
I did'nt watch the Olympics, until now. Jessica Ennis book is really inspiring.
I'm so proud of Jessica.
Don't tell us who wins in the video title; simply state the event. Some of us might want to actually watch as though for the first time, discovering who the winner is after the event takes place.
Complete inspiration. Well done :)
Though I hope Jess is there in Rio 2016 winning a 2nd gold medal nothing I suspect will top this moment winning under such enormous pressure and expectation.
Thank you for the support I've got a competition tommorow and have been training with my coach matt everson and I'm really nervous but thanks for the support
congrats. .
Urgh fake accounts.
What a beautiful flag xx
Laura Bowden Agree! The Union Jack is my favorite flag
Are you British? :D
Laura Bowden Nep! Senegalese (maybe you know the country), living and studying in France. And u?
Lamine LO More specifically, English, but I'm more or less British :)
Laura Bowden More or less British? loool! You are 100% British if you're English
Jess Ennis- amazing, absolutely amazing! Fantastic!!!
Is it just me but i think the London games were just better in every way then this one in Rio.
I agree, maybe it's about money
The atmosphere doesn't seem as good at Rio, so many empty seats at most of the events
+Hannah Taylor yeah even when they are finals it's not full at all, like today at the Olympic stadium
+Hannah Taylor unfortunately money wise their economy is really down. That's why there was Brazilian protesters at the opening ceremony in Rio. Because they spent more money on the Olympics than on education and other stuff. Also many people can't afford tickets. This is also why Rio had a very low budget for their opening ceremony. £10-£20 million less on their budget than London had for their opening ceremony. But I feel as though Tokyo 2020 will be amazing.
The games should have never gone to a country with so much social injustice.London is a first world city where you would never see children prostituting themselves on the street just to eat and where human beings are worth less than a can of coke.Personally i think the Catholic church and corrupt government have a lot to answer for.Church and state grinding down the poor.Oh well never mind.
they were great games. this one was probably the best and that's why it's my favorite! :D
I normally don't like really athletic girls, but man Jessica Ennis is a gem.
She 's beautiful and she shaves her armpits
preach!
Are you not a fan of six packs on girls? 😅
Ehh like it depends but generally im okay with it unless its super cut
Why? No hate just wondering whats wrong with us? Lol
Winning gold in ur country will never top anything I watch her MOH grey win gold makes me so proud 🇬🇧

Beautiful Jessica x x
She was a brilliant athelete
Jessica Ennis used to go to the same athletics club as me x
Best Olympics ever
Crazy that schippers switched to sprinting
They thought she'd broken the lane early, but it turned out to be the person one lane inside. She was reinstated and won the silver.
Ennis is so fit. Even compared to the other athletes. Wonder Woman!
Hi, does anyone know who the commentators are here please? Thanks
Jess world champion!
Go for Rio girl!

2012 WAS 9 YEARS AGO AHHHHHH
Jessica Ennis is best heptathlete ever lived
No phelps is
+JJ chen Phelps is a swimmer, not a heptathlete.
Wow.. 2 years later u still replay to my comment xD
You could see the moment where she say's to herself... "i want to win" :)
The slowest person in the slow heat crossed around 2:41. I ran track/XC in high school but I’m 37 now and just very inconsistent w/ my running. A 2:41 800m would probably kill me 🤣🤣🤣
Jessica Ennis is the best and she is from 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 like me she is a quick sprinter or runner
This was on my birthday
Beautiful😍💓💃
24:49 - 24:54 😂That Finished.
swimming quicker then Michael Phelps there
What a shame they didn’t show all of her events!
