Canada's Jessica Zelinka came second in the 800m heat with Russia's Tatyana Chernova in third.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

  • For anyone interested: Lilli Schwarzkopf of Germany took silver in the end. She was disqualified for stepping on the line but this was a mistake as the person actually stepping on the line was Russia's Kristina Savitskaya. So Schwarzkopf received silver in the end. Lydumyla Yosypenko of Ukraine who came in fourth was disqualified after the games for doping.

  • American here, had never heard of Jessica Ennis before, had somehow managed to watch this live in the US, and still 10 years later it's one of the most incredible sports moments I've ever seen. Just the noise as she came down the final straight; and most of the time you can't say this without it being complete BS, but she literally DECIDED TO WIN. An all-time Olympic moment.

  • It’s so crazy watching this in 2020 with Ennis-Hill and Thiesen-Eaton retired, Daphne Schippers now exclusively a sprinter (and one of The Greats, at that!), and hopefully 🤞🏼 a HUGE battle brewing beetween Johnson-Thompson and Nafi Thiam for the postponed games in 2021. The London games were maybe my favorites of all times. We got both breadth AND depth of coverage here in the States. There were so many good sportsmanship moments. It really was a Games for the ages.

Because they spent more money on the Olympics than on education and other stuff. Also many people can't afford tickets. This is also why Rio had a very low budget for their opening ceremony. £10-£20 million less on their budget than London had for their opening ceremony. But I feel as though Tokyo 2020 will be amazing.

  • The slowest person in the slow heat crossed around 2:41. I ran track/XC in high school but I’m 37 now and just very inconsistent w/ my running. A 2:41 800m would probably kill me 🤣🤣🤣
