  • Rowdy has had full career as Olympic gold medalist, development , announcer etc. He truly loves the sport and it comes through in broadcasts. If the chance would arise I do think Cody has similar traits.

  • Rowdy is awesome at what he does. He brings so much knowledge and enthusiasm. It is hard to find someone to match him in swimming or any other sport. When he does decide to retire, my vote is definitively with Cody to be his replacement as I think Cody will bring that same enthusiasm and knowledge. Hope that NBC sees this comment!

  • Rowdy is an amazing person and commentator without a doubt and the sport has elevated with him in the position he is in. One thing that I don’t particularly like about his commentary is not his passion (which he has a ton), but it’s he says something about Phelps every single swim it feels like. Phelps isn’t even swimming anymore professionally. He’s the GOAT but hahahaha. Just odd I guess. Great content! Much love.

  • Preferred the relatively small amount of time that Phelps commentated in Tokyo more than Rowdy's comments. Phelps talking about body position in the water was fascinating and a great insight. But hey, I'm the ultimate swim geek. I would also prefer that Rowdy include commentary about other swimmers in the pool when Ledecky's swimming. Watched Gaines commentate on a 1500 free that Ledecky wasn't even swimming and mentioned (only) Ledecky the entire swim. The other distance women work their butts off too and deserve a LOT of praise and recognition - much more than they ever get. But oh yeah, Ledecky's from a "great family."

  • The only downside of Rowdy is when he gives sky high expectations to swimmers, like the time when Caeleb broke 40 for the first time, the first reaction from Rowdy was "he doesn't break 39" which is just awkward when nobody has even broke 40 before Caeleb

  • RG doesn't bother me near as much as the overproduced constant camera cuts, especially on the short races. 2023 50 free final had SIX camera cuts on an 18s race. Would rather see whole race from a high center camera angle and then see the breakouts, underwaters, and finish on replay.

    • Executives don't think that way. This is not something customizable for swimmers. This is network television. They cater to wider audiences and need to focus their decisions on what gets the higher ratings. I understand that and so although I like Cody better than Rowdy there's no way Cody would succeed and build network ratings like Rowdy can. Plain and simple.

  • Rowdy is decent but not as well researched as someone like Chris Hindmarch-Watson. Best on deck announcer I had at meets was Chris Wilson who now runs CBC sports.

  • Cringe: when Rowdy refers to Ryan Murphy as “Murph”.

    @missionbelle28@missionbelle2828 күн бұрын
  • Rowdy is definitely enthusiastic. And he does his research… on the 2-3 swimmers who are going to factor in to the race. And you’re correct that those things are important for bringing people/fans into the sport. Rowdy is terrible at calling races in real time. He’s better than he was 20 years ago when the French men’s 4x100 free relay trounced the US and the world record (hands down the worst commentary I have ever heard in ANY sport). But if anything unexpected happens, it’s Dan Hicks that calls the race. To the extent that Rowdy can call a race, he sticks to the narrative that he predicted before the start based on his research and stuff that anybody can see with their own eyes. That’s probably fine 90% of the time. Swimming is a lot more predictable than other head-to-head sports. But man, when something unexpected happens Rowdy is the last to know. I think that he’s had the benefit of being the guy during the Phelps years. And, frankly, when they’ve brought in other swimmers to commentate (Summer Sanders or Phelps) they haven’t been better and considerably more reserved, so Rowdy’s job is probably safe. But I have to turn the volume down when I watch swimming

  • I can't watch longer races than 100 without commentary, it get's boring for me... and Rowdy is simply the best, he needs to be cloned and his clones taught more languages so everyone can enjoy him at the same time

  • Sure Rowdy needs to pay attention to all the swimming info, but there are a ton of swimnerds in the sport. And they are really detail junkies. I assume that for Rowdy and for other real swimnerds the background info and speculations come second nature. Rowdy's enthusiastic commentary is what sets him apart from me and my buddies watching the NCAAs live. Sometimes his enthusiasm distracts him from some the race details, like when he missed the final 50 of the Penn guy Swanson winning the 1650 in 2016. Rowdy was roasted for this mercilessly by the nerds. Juggling the commentary with the enthusiasm can sometimes be tough. I thought Phelps was very insightful at Tokyo.

    @jryan1024@jryan102428 күн бұрын
  • Respectfully I completely disagree with your Rowdy take. I think it’s time the sport of swimming should look for a new face for commentary. I agree that Rowdy is a LEGEND in swimming and has done soo much for the community… but the man is getting old and isn’t as witty as he used to be. Swimming has changed so much in just the last 10 years and I think Rowdy has fallen behind with the times and isn’t as knowledgeable anymore. We all love the excitement he brings to races but he often times doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I think it would be cool if Phelps stepped in and took over as the new Rowdy… if he’d be up for it. Idk this is my hot take.

    @nickfitzwilliam6777@nickfitzwilliam677729 күн бұрын
  • my issue with Rowdy is that he's too much of a 'homer' there are other people in the race than the one he likes..if you aren't one of his, you could win the race and rowdy might not mention you! He's very knowledgeable but too much of homer.
