How to Endorse your RN License in California | NURSING IN CA
Hello all! I'm officially licensed to work in the state of California 🤩
**NOTE: Hi, please keep in mind this info is relevant to the time I posted the video in 2021 so information may be outdated. Please look at the official CA-BRN website for current info before starting the endorsement process. Also, this is relevant for people who have their RN license from another US state. I'm not familiar with the process for foreign licenses, apologies.**
FIRST: APOLOGIES FOR THE BAD QUALITY??? IDK WHY IT LOOKS SO BAD ㅠㅠ
I hope this video helps you out if you're looking to work in California as a RN :)

soon to be nursing 6 student here, thank you for this video!!! I find everything related to licensure so stressful, this made it so simple.
Hello, Lili! Thanks a lot for this video. I’m following the list on the website but it’s great to know how other RNs (like yourself) experienced it first hand too. Congratulations on this one! Good luck!
Thank you so much for the detailed info! It was clear as crystal.🙂
Utah roseman graduate here! Just passed my NCLEX and this is awesome!! Thank you!!
Thank you for making this video, Lilian. I'm applying for my license rn, and your video is super helpful!
Did you see a place to upload a 2x2 photo? I didn’t even see it! Think they got rid of it, I just saw the spot to upload nursing verification and military documents if applicable
You simplified what i need, thanks.
I am also from NV planning to work in CA as an RN. Thanks for making this video!
I am a us citizen and applied for CA RN license. Received license number within 4 weeks. It was a simple and straightforward process. Just follow the steps on the website.
Hi! I just wanted to ask you about fingerprint, you did manual one, or live scan? Are you out of state ? Thank you!
Hi, I did the hard copy/ manual
Woah great video!!!
Thank you! 🥰
awesome, I've been a LPN in Las Vegas for over a decade, opportunities here are awful unless you want to work LTC or rehab with a 10+ census every shift. California, Washington and Oregon seem to have tons of better paying, quality positions. Thank you for the whole process, LiveScan is much better. edit: I received a job offer in CA for 3 times what I was making in Vegas, but I need to hurry and apply for a CA license. This is a great tutorial
what job did you receive in CA? Me and my. Friends are LVNs in CA and the job options are terrible 😭 I’m going back to school for RN just not sure if I should do it in CA or AZ and then endorse bc my LVN is from CALI
Thank you for such an awesome video on such a complicated and vague process. I was super confused about what needed to be done before other things and you helped lay it out very well!!
Thanks for watching! I also felt a bit lost during this process so I'm glad you feel my video can be helpful. 🥰
Have you been struggling with NCLEX be it LPN or RN, have you taken the exam for more than once? Are you taking it for the first time? Do you have a too busy schedule to study? Get to Dr NeedHam for your NCLEX assistance. I’m so happy I finally passed my exams after taking the test twice thanks to him. He’s got a magical qbank which will help you. Get to him and your NCLEX problems will be solved.
Hi I’m from California and I’m interested in leaving out of state to study at Roseman or Unlv for my BSN and wanted to know what do you recommend is best to get a license in Nevada or just wait at take the nclex in CA? (I plan on going back home once I’m done with the nursing program) (:
@@VanessaRodriguez-xe6vd It really just depends on you. The licensing test is the same nationally. If you take the NCLEX in NV and endorse it in CA, you'd be able to work in NV AND CA. Soonest you could take it in NV in my experience was like 1-2 weeks after you graduate. This would also cost more money and time to include the endorsement process. If you wait and take your NCLEX in CA, you can only work in CA (I'm not sure if CA has contract w other states). I've heard wait times to test are about 1-3 months after graduation. Good luck to you.
Hi Lili :) ,Would you recommend getting your fingerprinting done before submitting the temporary license application? I’m scared it will delay it longer because I am out of the country.
hey lilian!! thank you for this video!! did you have any trouble in regards to the communication prereqs that the BRN lists? I did all my hard science prereqs in CA but never had to take an oral communications class, did u have any hiccups in regards to that?
Hi Lilian, thank you so much for your video. I`m from Puerto Rico and will take the NCLEX soon but I do wanna move to LA once I get some experience, is there anything different or any other steps I need to take in order to transfer my license to Cali ? Thank you !!!!
Thank you for all the detailed info! Can I still work on both states after I get the CA?
Yes! You can work in any of the states you are licensed in. Going on in the future, as long as you renew both of your licenses, you can continue to practice in both states. Thank you for watching 😆
Will it matter if I had my nursing school expedite the transcripts and sent it to the Californias BON physical address rather then the PO Box listed?? My school said they cannot expedite to PO Box’s since it will be fed ex that does the deliveries for the expedited requests… if not I guess I can ask my school to mail to PO Box
Great video ! Did they ask for letters of recommendations?
nope!!
What if I have a bachelor's already and want to apply to an accelerated program in Utah ? Will my science courses and other classes transfer back if I get my degree from Utah to California ? Do they have an expiration ?. Please let me know. Thank you
how has it been making that transition? i wanna branch out but don’t wanna feel like a deer in headlights starting as a nurse at north only a diff hospital, but diff state!
Hi lili, what's the time period to submit fingerprint after submitted online application? and Whats the address to submit transcript? Thanks
Hi Lily, when applying for endorsement in California, do you give up your original state license?
Hi Lillian my education is lacking on obstetric and pediatric, how do I find supplementary course?
In my case, they are asking me for a International Verification form, do you know what I need to do? Because these kind of form isn't in the PDF.
Hi! Thank you for this video it was very informative. I am looking to work in California after I graduate nursing school in May 2023. Do you know if the state of California requires a microbiology lab? I would be coming from out of state and I just want to make sure I meet all of the requirements. Thank you so much!
Hello, Yes! I took all my prerequisites in California and we were required to have micro w a lab, chem w lab, anatomy w lab, and physio w lab to qualify for a nursing degree/license
Hey girl I watched your video after applying for the California license. Just like you, I also went to a community college for my prerequisites then transferred to a nursing program. For the transcript section, I only put the nursing school transcripts to be sent, and now that I try to add additional information it doesn't give me the option to add a new school to my application :( Do you have any idea what I should do?
Ahh I'm not entirely sure :( You can try calling to see if you're able to edit your application or just try to send your prereq transcript and hope they get added to your application.
Am I able to practice in another state while I start doing these steps? Or my current license becomes invalid?
May I ask which address you used when you send your document to Board of Nursing California? Ty
Hi, the evaluator was asking about my NCLEX verification details. Do you have any idea about this?
I’ll be graduating in December and I live in Oregon with plans to possibly move to California.. but I don’t know of any specific places in California… especially not which areas are best for a new grad rn. Can you maybe make a video on this or provide suggestions? How to find top hospitals? Areas to live? Etc
Congrats on almost being done!!! 🎉🎉 I honestly have to say I don't know the best places to apply to for new grad :( and I really didn't have a fruitful experience applying for jobs, so I don't feel qualified enough to make a video on this. The places I applied to were all where I had family residing so that I wouldn't have to worry so much about housing prices 😅 My best advice would be to look into it early and find new grad programs you want to apply to! Some of the UC's have hospitals (though very competitive) and if you really want to find hospitals, I would try joining FaceBook groups for networking. There are a lot of FB forums where nurses/new-grad nurses will post about openings in a specific area. It was pretty difficult for me to find a position that wasn't med-surg. Residency programs are almost like your only chance at getting a different/specialized floor, in my personal experience. Job-hunting was really discouraging LOL. But if your resume is competitive you might have a better chance than I did! If you're looking for areas to live, I really love the Tahoe, San Diego, and Sacramento areas. The Central Valley is really low-key compared to these other places (mostly farming), but it's a great midpoint for making trips to the Bay Area and also down south. Hope this helps you somewhat ✨🤍
Simone, check out other places, California is on a decline...
Hi lili, Very informative video! I’ve heard those California times are ridiculous. I’m an Out of state nursing student hoping to go to California. Do you think it’s easier to just test out in California or test in school state and then apply for endorsement? Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I think it just depends on how you feel really. You'd have to wait either way whether you decide to take NCLEX in CA or endorse your license. I chose to take my NCLEX out-of-state because I wasn't sure I'd be able to pass NCLEX on the first try and I also wasn't sure if I'd be able to get a job soon enough as a new-grad. If you're confident and don't mind waiting to take your NCLEX, it's less work and less money to get your license straight through CABRN vs endorsing. Hope this helps 😆 *** Also: if you choose to take your test through CABRN, you can register through the CABRN website but take your test at your nearest testing center in your state!!! It's the same test but everywhere, it just depends on what state you choose to register through!
@@LilianTran wow I didn’t know that I could do that! Thanks for responding! It was really informative.
Heyy just to piggyback off the great information, I went to school and completed my license in Arizona when I planned on coming back to Cali (where I live). I was able to take my NCLEX here in Cali for my AZ license and am currently in the process of endorsing it. After talking with a few others from my cohort whose plan was not to endorse but rather just apply to a Cali license, I found my process was way faster. We graduated in April of this year and I was able to take my NCLEX and start the endorsement process while they still haven't even gotten their ATT ( the ok for you to test) in order to schedule their exam. It did end up being more money for both including the temp. in Cali, but my process was much faster and I am also licensed in both states if I ever wanted to go back.

Nurses, get California out of your head.. Check other places.. too much taxes and increased regulations...nurse: patient ratio too high.... too much responsibility and not enough time.... look elsewhere.. hospital census is down. Don't believe MSM..
Hi! I'm starting and ABSN program this summer! I am attending a very well known and accredited nursing program in Tennessee, does pretty much every nursing program meet the educational requirements for licensure in CA? or was that something you looked at before starting your nursing program? My boyfriend and I (California natives) will most likely move back to California in a few years, however, I assumed all accredited nursing programs would suffice for California RN licensure... any clarification helps :) thank you!
Hello, The requirements are not all the same nation wide. To get into nursing school or to qualify for a license in California, there is a list of prerequisites that must be completed. I have heard that typically, microbiology and oral communication are the classes people tend to need when applying for California licensure. Here's a link listing some of the requirements for out-of-state applicants. I would browse the CABRN website for more up-to-date information! www.rn.ca.gov/applicants/lic-end.shtml Aside from the prerequisites, I do believe any accredited nursing program that is approved to have their students sit for the NCLEX would be acceptable! Hope this helps :)
@@LilianTran Thank you so much!! I have. been very confused about this and this definitely helps!! I appreciate it 💕
Are you going to keep being licensed for both states?
I applied for a temporary license back in January and I haven’t received it. How will I know I have received it?
Hello, I am in the process of getting this done but does the two schools where I completed a couple of my pre-requsites have to fill out that form to send with the transcript or is it just my nursing school? Just a little confused on that or do the schools just send the transcript to the Nursing Boards without it? Thank you so much!!!
I only asked my nursing school to fill out that form!
@@LilianTran thanks for the reply appreciate the help. Last question did you just send your community college transcript online? I heard that it’s a faster process and I have two other transcripts to send
@@nancylopez64 Yes! My community college had the option to send it online so I did that. My nursing school only did physical transcripts so I had to mail that. Online is definitely faster!
Thanks.. What’s the difference waiting time for an extra $100 for a temporary license, compared to waiting on the regular 10-12 weeks?
I believe it took about a month to get my temporary license and about 3 months to get my official endorsement. I think if you already have a job lined up, the temporary license is worth it. Other than that, you could probably wait.
Can international students do this as well ?
How did you upload you headshots to the website? Were you given a digital copy?
I scanned the physical 2x2 headshot and uploaded the file onto my computer.
Do I need to have a CGFNS to apply? I have a active license in Nebraska. Thank you
Hi, I'm not quite sure what that is 😅 I'm going to assume no, since I didn't have to, but I'm not too sure.
where will i attach those?
Did you have to have had a job offer in California to get your license endorsed? I am a Canadian RN planning to move to Detroit then applying for California RN license. Would I need a job offer from California to apply for a California RN license?
Hi! You do not have to have a job offer in CA, at least I didn't! I'm not entirely sure how that works for international applications though. I believe you can apply for endorsement and ask for a temporary license, but they won't ask if you have a job yet as far as I know.
Been calling them everyday for a week, phone list is always full and keep saying call back at a later date. I applied for temporary license and its already been 9 weeks. I will probably go to sacramento just to see what’s going on. Ive been an lvn in ca for 6 years but my rn is from florida.
Just curious to know if you ever figured this out? I’m an RN from Florida trying to do the endorsement to CA. I keep hearing the same call back at a later date. I was thinking of going to Sacramento. Let me know, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks
Hi, Did you send your school graduation transcript electronically? I sent it too, but I'm worried because they haven't checked it in a few days.
I think my nursing school only sent hard-copies of the transcript. My other school sent them electronically! It takes a bit for it to processed so just give it a little more time :)
@@LilianTran I had nowhere to ask, thank you for your kind reply :)))

Im confused about the form. I have a out of state driver's license, do I put that? Also, what do I put for the OCA and original ATI?
Hi, did you figure out what to put under OCA?
So when I get to attachments, I only see need to submit Nursys verification. It does not say to submit headshot there. I don't want to submit and not be able to submit 2x2 later on. I might wait until I have my pic to submit app
Hi please read the video description. I’ve seen a few comments saying headshots are no longer required. My video was relevant to applying for endorsement in 2021! I would check the BRN website requirements just to be sure. Good luck.
How long did it take for the endorsement process to take until you got your CA license? Did you also get your interim license?
I applied for endorsement end of March and didn't get endorsed until early/mid June so I believe it was a total of 12 weeks. My interim license was for NV, but I did get my temporary CA license about a month after I applied I think :)
I’m actually trying to move to Nevada to do the pre-licensure program at WGU. I then want to move back to CA. I would want to endorse my license. Anyone know more information with endorsing to CA from this school?
following..did you figure this out?
@@jessicachilds724did you?
What college did you go to? Did you have to take any classes to get license in California? I’m going to carrington college at reno
It's a small private college near Las Vegas, NV! I didn't have to take any extra classes, and I believe as long as your program is accredited by the organizations approved by CA, you shouldn't have to either!

Do you have both licenses? Because I want to get my Cali license but also keep my Texas license ❤️
that's a good question! did you ever figure out?
Yes you can have as many licenses as you want as long as you renew it
Hi .. do we have to rewrite the nclex exam for California endorsement?
you should not have to retake the nclex if you already have passed with a license from another state. nclex is a national test, so as long as you meet all the requirements for california endorsement, you shouldn't have to retake the test.
Just submitted my application! Didn’t see a spot for a photo so maybe they did away with that!
Ah maybe they changed it! It was on one of the first pages of my application for me!
did you do a verification letter? if so can you explain what it is exactly??
I did not do a verification letter, sorry :/
Can you please tell which location did you use for fingerprint! There’s so many!!!!
i honestly just searched it up and went to the nearest post office that offered it LOL there really are a lot of locations!
@@LilianTran I called few places finally found a good one in LA lol. Also I am overwhelmed, I don't know which hospitals are good to work in CA! any recommendations?
The online application asks for "RN License Number By Exam" and "RN License Issue Date by Exam" but what does that mean and where do I find this information? It already asks for my "RN License Number" and "RN License Issue Date" which I do know but what and where do I find the "by exam" information?
Hi, I'm not quite sure what that part is. I don't remember being asked for my License Number by Exam... I think that may be the same as just your RN License Number for whatever state you originally took your NCLEX. Sorry :(
@@LilianTran Thanks!
What if, if you are a Filipino nurse? 💖
Hi which school did you go to?
When you endorsed your license in Cali did you lose your license in your original state?
Nope. You get to keep both so long as you continue to renew your licenses over the years
why did you get nclex in nevada then endorse to cali? why not just do nclex in cali in the first place?
Hi! There are several reasons why I chose to take my NCLEX out-of-state: I wanted to take NCLEX ASAP so I wouldn't have to spend so much time stressing over the test. I wasn't sure I'd be able to pass NCLEX on the first try, so I wanted to take my test in a state that had a faster processing time so that if I needed to retake NCLEX, I could do so sooner. I also wasn't sure if I'd be able to get a job soon enough as a new-grad in CA (believe me, it's harder than you think) so I liked having the option to work in NV and then moving back to CA with some experience. I hope to do travel nursing, so (in my mind) it's nice to have multiple licenses and I plan to go to graduate school in the future, so I have more options available to me. Thanks for watching :)

hi yes i've seen multiple people say it's not required on the application anymore.... this video is relevant to when i endorsed my license in march of 2021! please make sure to check the actual cabrn website before starting your application to make sure you have the most up-to-date information. thanks for watching!
Did you apply for a temporary license?
Yes, I did! I can't remember how long it took, but the wait wasn't nearly as long as my endorsement process!

Endorsement to NY is taking longer than five months.... :(
Wow that's a long time! I'm not exactly sure how long the endorsement process is for NY, but I would try to follow up by calling the NY board for updates to see if your application is missing anything!
Now she is beautiful
Relax bud lol
Did the state of California challenge your nursing program. I keep reading that they can deny your endorsement because the nursing program you graduate from and got helped to pass the states nclex of where the school is just because it does not align with California’s nursing program requirements.
They did not challenge mine, but I have heard as well that for some states/schools, the CABRN requires additional courses/credits :( As far as I know, the accrediting organization is what most people look at, but I also have not done much research on this at all 😬
They will send you a list of deficiency, but you can start practicing with temporary license and keep extending it every 6 months. Communication studies is the one that most people lack, only california requires it.
Is chem req ? I’m an RRT wanting to do a Rt to Rn program in the state of florida
