CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Ordell (Samuel L. Jackson) asks the whereabouts of Melanie, Louis (Robert De Niro) explains that he shot her...twice.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1995 Rum Punch, switching the action from Miami to LA, and altering the central character from white to black. Ruthless arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), who lives with perpetually stoned beach-babe Melanie (Bridget Fonda), teams with his old buddy Louis Gara (Robert De Niro), just released from prison after serving four years for armed robbery. ATF agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) and cop Mark Dargus (Michael Bowen) bust stewardess Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), who was smuggling money into the country for Ordell. Ordell springs Jackie, but when middle-aged bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster) picks her up at the jail, he's attracted to her, and they choose a romantic route with detours. Mistrust and suspicions surface after Jackie pits Ordell and the cops against each other, convincing Ordell that she's going to double-cross the cops. Tarantino commented on the film's budget: "Jackie Brown only cost $12 million. You can't lose. You absolutely, positively can't lose. And you don't have to compromise."

Jackson and Tarantino are one the greatest actor-director duos in the universe.
Which is why Tarantino should have directed the Star Wars prequels.
Joel Price II just like De Niro and Scorsese

“You couldn’t just hit her” fantastic line
This is THE MOST underrated Tarantino film.
I know i just watched it today along with reservoir dogs & pulp fiction, lol just because im gonna watch once upon a time in hollywood
triplesixsoulzay 36 yeah same really good movie
I watched it on the big screen last night for the first time ever. And i was blown away by how good this movie was. It is a total hangout movie.
At least, on the top 5 of his films, if you don't agree, you know nothing about film or Tarantino. Well, that's how I feel about it.
This film is dope don’t get me wrong but hateful 8 is the most underrated Tarantino film
This role is quite a departure for DeNiro. For years cast as tough guys and gangsters, and then playing a brain dead buffoon in Jackie Brown.
He used to be beautiful...but something happened to him
All the other movies he was acting in this one he just had to be himself
Nah, he just had a supporting role in a Tarantino movie. There are always weird roles for big names in his movies.
It was the last real film acting he had done until 'The Irishman.'
DeNiro wanted the role of Max Cherry, but Tarantino chose Robert Forster instead. He liked the script so much that he took the lesser role just to be in the movie.
" Nah nah nah...u insulted her a little bit you a litte out of line yourself "
Give those Irish hoodlums a drink down there
Nah youse don’t have to drink with me
"Order"
quite possibly the best thread of comments ive ever seen 😂. ^^^
Now go home and get your shinebox
As you get older, you start to appreciate not only good acting, but good directors, good dialogue, & good camera angles. Samuel L. Jackson with Robert De Niro & Tarantino behind the camera? It doesn't get much better.💯
yeeeeeeeees !!!
QT likes the n word a lil too much but he's good
I agree. The writing, set design, cinematography and wardrobe. Just everything. QT’s movies just make you dive into the story.
As you get older you start to understand that Louis had no choice but to shoot Melanie
when this movie came out I hated seeing deniro as a bumbling idiot. it was just such a departure from anything that he'd ever done. but watching these clips now is like pure honey. Jackson and Deniro were absolutely magical together.
- You shot Melanie?? - Twice... LOLOLOLOLOL
@M N Pretty much
that was his barbie doll
National Coaster News yea
In the parking lot.
How does Samuel L. Jackson's character know that Louis shot Melanie twice? Louis never says how many times he shot Melanie.
This is like the equivalent of the "I think i shot Marvin in the face" scene
you mean "i shot Marvin in the face." he wouldnt be unsure about it. he wasnt far away!
Your profile pic makes me think of how amazing it would have been for Tarantino to have directed a McCoy era Doctor Who! (With a Hollywood budget of course)
My thoughts exactly
There was no thinking about that.
“Oh man I shot Marvin in the face” is one of my favourite lines he just delivers it so casual
Samuel is at his peak here man, awesome acting.
he is just being samuel here.
Eh his acting wasn’t that much better in this than it was in other films, it’s still great and it’s better than his current stuff but I wouldn’t say it’s his peak
His peak? My dude, his acting is always great.
Indeed. His best role and performance.
Carsten Kuehn I don't think he got worse at acting, it's just that this role suits him perfectly
He gave the face like it's just a normal everyday occurrence. It's like "I shot her. She got pissy, what can I tell ya?"
Zydeco Honeycup "how can you talk to her, you know?"
Aw man I shot Melanie in the chest.

I like how the first half of this scene is set up in a way that makes Ordell appear slightly redeemable in his sensibility, then immediately he's like "Good, last thing we want is her surviving ... ANYONE BUT HER" 🤣
The fact Ordell said that shows just what a nightmare Melanie was that he worried about what she'd do if she survived 🤣🤣
I don’t know. It feels more like he was fishing to see if she could still be alive and perhaps she could actually be saved. When he gets the confirmation that she’s indeed dead, he decided to kill his partner.
@@licmir3663 He would not have killed Louis for shooting Melanie but for losing his $550,000, he had to do it.
I think it's confirmed later in the movie that he was just playing Louis along here. Louis got wacked because he killed Melanie.
Ordell was definitely crafty & irredeemable, but I thought he looked genuinely mad & sad to hear Melanie was dead. He valued his “surfer girl.”
Funny how everything worked out in Jackie’s favor.... Louis shooting Melinda... Her body was found with 10k... Ordell killing Louis ended up backing up Jackie story on Ordell setting the entire thing up... This movie was so great...
Jackie gave her the 10 grand so that she'd be found with it, I think. Maybe she didn't know she'd be shot in the parking lot, but if I'm not mistaken she gave her marked bills. That wasn't a random act of kindness on her part.
It is called Jackie brown
@@jonazo7188 yeah you're correct Jackie did it so that Ordell would think Melanie stole from him and so the ATF would also believe her story of Melanie barging in and stealing the money leaving her blameless but the ATF would have to honour the deal they made.
Great scene between two legends. Samuel L. Jackson plays one of the creepiest villains of all time in this role.
Why he hasn’t got an Academy Award yet I don’t know.

121bham It was Samuel L. Jackson who made the whole movie, not just this scene.
Suat 33 ROLE
If only he was the same in person. 🤷
After all those years, I still feel Jackie Brown was Tarantino's best movie.
Samuel Jackson’s reaction to him shooting Melanie was priceless. Like that was a genuine “bruh......wtf” face @ 0:23 😂😂😂😂
"If you had to do it, then you had to do it brother" 😂😂😂 so matter of fact about it
Yep. He said it with deadly calm. Ordell had just decided he was going to kill him over Melanie.
+Mich Not just that, the money. He kinda warned Louis when he showed him Beaumont's dead money.
+Mich he didn't kill him over Melanie it was over him losing the money and not telling him he saw Robert Forster's character in the mall
He might have been thinking at 1:09 that Louis is another employee he may have to let go. He certainly did take that decision after he found most of the money was missing. I don't know if feelings for Melanie, if any, come into it - Louis gunning her down in a parking lot is loose cannon behaviour that Ordell cannot afford.
Ordell is too calculating to go ballistic on Louis when he still has the gun. And Louis already has shown that he can get homicidal with someone who has a go at him. But Ordell is probably thinking even then about employment termination.
One of de Niro’s best performances , totally believable
The stumbling, mumbling, ex-con without self-confidence is a complete contrast to movies like Casimo & Goodfellas. The man has range
"You couldn't just hit her?!" 😂
“Is she dead?” “Pretty much.” LOL!!!
Pretty much!
L O L ! ! ! !
I think it would have been funny if Bridget had somehow survived being shot twice and started making things even more miserable for the other two because they don't know what happened to the rest of the money!
The most Robert DeNiro thing ever
rgerber 😂😂 “pretty much”
Yes I agree
"So you light about a half million and ten." 😂😂😂 My favorite role by Samuel L Jackson
That ponytail put sam Jackson character over the top
I love how he goes from being shocked to just accepting it.
- Is she dead? - I.. I.. Pretty much. - What do you mean "pretty much"?
-"You couldnt just hit her?" -"Maybe..." 🤣🤣🤣
There's just something about the nonchalant & anticlimactic nature of this conversation that makes this scene absolutely hilarious 🤣
It's subtle but the way he says "if you had to do it, you had to do it" you can see a hint of pain in his expression. Like this is a hardass murderous psychopath but even he had something for that girl. The way he kills Louis also implies it was out of revenge. Shooting him the exact way he shot Melanie. Genius.
IDK about that. By this time in the story Odell is really starting to feel it. He's been duped and robbed, his pick up man just committed a very public murder in a shopping mall where Louis and Melanie were both seen together inside and outside the mall. I just see that as Odell being thorough in the same way he dusted off Beaumont. It just minimizes the risk towards him. His money is gone, he's just learned that Max and Jackie are behind it. Louis isn't just worthless to him, he's a major liability.
Ordell didn't give a shit about Melanie.
when he looks sideways at Louis, it means he has already decided to eliminate him sooner or later, since his friend has become a deadweight and a huge liability. he kept talking to him as if Melanie deserved it so he could kill him quietly minimizing the risk (Louis still has a gun, remember). Add the fact he saw Max Cherry and didnt think of anything and well, bye Louis
Peter Darker Yes he did
@@golf_clap_ Yeah well you're wrong because he did. He even mentions this to Max in the end saying why did Lou have to shoot her.
Quinten Tarantino’s most underrated film in my opinion
I watched it for the first time last summer and was blown away I hadn’t heard about it before. It wasn’t quite on the level of Pulp Fiction iconic, but it wasn’t too far behind
Never even heard of this movie but I am going to make sure I watch it tonight. How in the hell did I miss this.
did you ever watch it?
@@joemack80 thats what im sayin
"You can't trust Melanie, but you can trust Melanie to be Melanie."
"You couldn't just hit her".... OMG!!
Melanie would much prefer being slapped :)
Listening to him recap the events of Melanie's shooting was funnier than the shooting itself.
"You light aint cha?", about a half million 10?' LMFAO!!!!
2 A-list actors! Samuel L Jackson‘s facial expressions in this scene cracks me up, some of his best acting ever! I love this movie!
Amazing
These two are absolute movie legends.
Its the little things that make this such a good scene. Just the fact that Deniro keeps his eyes on the road even though he's talking to someone. Alot of movies would have the driver look at the passenger for almost the duration of the conversation.
In 1997: Pacino - Devil's Advocate DeNiro - Jackie Brown
@frank grimes Obvious troll is obvious.
One of De Niro’s better post-Heat films and he was only a supporting character.
“You couldn’t talk to her?” “I... uh... How do you talk to her?” LMAO 😂
"If you had to do it, then you had to do it."
DeNiro was so great in this movie, he used body language like a true pro... Lewis doesn't do or say much in this movie but good old Bobby D says it all the way he plays this character
that first "is she dead?" gets me everytime 😂excellent acting as usual from Samuel L
Samuel Jackson’s face expressions throughout this whole scene always cracks me the hell up! Two A-list actors!

"pretty much dead" - i just love it!!!)))
Yes, it makes me laugh whenever I see this scene ! I had a teacher when I was a kid who was fond of saying "There are two things you can't be just a "little of" - pregnant or dead". That would apply to this scene where Louis says Melanie is "pretty much" dead....
"Is she dead?" "Pretty much." I'm with him, what kind of an answer IS that? 🤣
One of the BEST movies of the 90s. I absolutely LOVE this. Rum Punch is a good buck sure, but this is a case where the movie is better than the book. Flawless casting and performances. The soundtrack is just as amazing. Introduced this Irish lad to a ton of amazing artists like the the Delfonics. And I just have to say....Pam Grier is one of the most beautiful, stunning and gorgeous women ever. I went back and checked out some of her stuff like Coffee and all after...wow...
JACKSON "is she dead" DENIRO "pretty much" ..fucking hilarious and the way deniro says "i shot her"...like it's no big deal and happens all the time :)
It may not be the first time he has killed someone, though he does not seem to have done time for it - he was in for armed robbery.
I F'ing love every single aspect of this movie. Casting is brilliant, dialogue is wonderful. I appreciate something new about it everytime i watch it.
I like this movie, but I wouldn't say it ranks as one of my favorites. But it has some of my favorite characters of any movie. Ordell is my favorite Samuel Jackson character, even though most prefer the Jules character in Pulp Fiction. But I LOVE the way DeNiro played Louis. I don't like Louis himself, but it is one of the most amazing acting jobs I've seen. Most memorable acting scenes are based on emotional dialogue and I like that too, but the truth is, given the right circumstances....most ordinary people could give a really good emotional dialogue speech if you put them in a movie and gave them the right direction, preparation, etc. A role like Louis is what separates the pros from the amateurs. We are used to seeing Robert DeNiro in roles like Godfather 2, Goodfellas, Casino. Roles where he plays larger than life characters and very important, charismatic people. Louis is the exact opposite of all of that. You could look at Louis, his demeanor, and watch him and how he reacts to his environment for 5 minutes and within those 5 minutes, you would know that Louis is a loser in life...and you could tell without DeNiro needing one line of dialogue. Telling the audience everything you need to know about a character without any words and using nothing but a look and body language. THAT is only something a very select few could pull off.
***** umm, De Niro is in his 70s, he's not going to get offered the same type of roles he used to get 20 years ago.
***** You have no fucking idea of what you're talking about, kid. 30 years ago, De Niro was still making excellent films like Midnight Run, Awakenings,Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Bronx Tale etc It wasn't until the late 90's when De Niro started to make films beneath him which is less than 20 year now..not 30. Actors in their 60s and up don't get offered the big roles that young actors in their 20s and 30s get...that's a FACT.
***** I'm not cherry picking, i'm just not going to type De Niro's long resume for you... LOL 30 years is a hell of an estimate and you were way off...20 years would've been much closer. And no, It's not an excuse, it's a fact that older actors have to wait longer for better roles. So you're telling me actors in their 60's and up get offered the same type of quality leading roles younger actors in their 30's get? lol You really need to get a clue about how Hollywood works, kiddo. They like to cater to the younger audience since they're the ones that sell out the theaters. So, they're going to offer their best roles to the younger stars that the younger audience can recognize and identify with. Yes, there are some great roles for older actors but they're rare and limited.. most of the time it's not a leading role, more like a secondary smaller role playing someone's dad ,grandfather or mentor. De Niro is not going to get offered the same type of quality roles he was offered 30 years ago...much less the better ones he was offered 40 years ago. Get used to it. Could he be more selective and not make the "big money" trash he's been making recently? Sure but that would mean he would have to sit on the sidelines and wait for the perfect role to come along like the other older actors(Dustin Hoffman or Jack Nicholson) are doing..And I don't see De Niro doing that since he likes to remain active doing movies. And since he's more of a business tycoon these days opening restaurants and hotels around the globe when he's not running his little Tribeca empire in NYC, i'm sure the extra money from those trashy commercial films doesn't hurt to help sustain those businesses.. Besides, De Niro has NOTHING to prove to you or anyone. I can't think of a younger actor today who can match De Niro's best roles. The only actor today that comes close is Daniel Day Lewis.
+Joe Lazarus Well said.
I agree 100%. And I love Ordell Robbie as well, even though I don't fully love this film, I still kinda like the film, but I love Ordell Robbie, and Jackie Brown.
De Niro was amazing as Lewis in this, the stammering, the aloofness. Its just insane
You said well....was. Not like today, accepting every mediocre role for mediocre movies. He just can't accept the fact it's too old to act, his time is over, along with Al Pacino and other top tier actors.
StIwY wtf are taking about? Op was admiring him you dumbass
De Niro wasn't even his first choice either. Louis was supposed to be for Sly Stallone.
I think it WAS just DeNiro, lol.

Such a great film. Saw it in theaters when I was 16. So many people at the time wanted Pulp Fiction part 2 and whined like big babies. This flick was a slam dunk for me.
The fact it didn’t become mainstream popular makes it so much better too
lol I was one of them... I think Pulp Fiction was the movie that turned me into a film nerd. So I had to recalibrate myself when I watched Jacki Brown.
I loved it then and now
I love how Sam Jackson completely understands the situation with Melanie. Any two men who have dated American women are apart of that brotherhood.
gotta agree with u
WhiteShark125 he doesnt understand he just doesnt give a fuck, hence he is checking the money right after. he did whatever needed to be done but then he fucked up anyway so you gots to go rip

Kevin Walker great scene with 2 living legends ..and did u notice the 'music score' at 1-13 when Jackson sees the $$$$ is light ..brilliant !
I don't think so. At 1:09 his look could mean "Louis, I'm gonna have to let you go like I did with Beaumont". He just isn't ready to shoot him at that point. Then he opens the bag...

Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro = Acting On INSANE Level 🔥🔥🔥👊🏻 I'm Shocked How The Scene Turned Out and Improvised. Wow😲
Doesn't get any better than this
The writing, the delivery. It’s just so damn good.
I think at 1:09 was the first moment Ordell felt distrust in Louis, after that his suspicion deepened, and after that he lost all respect/compassion. It was sort've like putting old yeller to sleep in a crime way. Great performances by these two legends, some of their greatest work, some THE greatest work.
Agreed man!
Andre Moore Maybe Samuel L just wanted revenge for De Niro ordering him to be whacked in Goodfellas
He killed him out of paranoia and disappointment i feel like. To kill Melanie in a mall parking lot was sloppy and he thought Louis knew better. Once he realized the money was gone, not only did Louis have a body on their hands but couldnt even bring him all his money. To your old yeller analogy,it was time to put Louis, and old dog,out to pasture.
That suspicion is the only thing not working in this movie: if you want to cheat him you just run away with the money, you don’t go back to him light of 510k... EDIT: I’ve realised I’m answering to a comment posted 5 years ago
Not only that a bit later order knew it was kill or be killed. Louis warned ordell he better cut it out. Low key threatening him. That was the absolute last straw.
look at these two great actors together. DeNiro is the real deal, he doesn't care if he plays a complete idiot, he likes to work, he's a professional actor. Awesome. And Samuel Jackson really shines in this scene. It's amazing to see.
This was the best scene in the movie. Robert De Niro and Samuel L. Jackson are absolutely great together!
