Watch the full video here: • Scott Ritter on Ukrain...
Former UN weapons inspector and US Marine intelligence officer Scott Ritter speaks at the Community Church of Boston, about the conflict in Ukraine, US-Russia relations, and his most recent book Disarmament in the Time of Perestroika: Arms Control and the End of the Soviet Union.
Scott also wrote SCORPION KING: America’s Suicidal Embrace of Nuclear Weapons from FDR to Trump.
Having served in the Soviet Union, Scott offers an alternative perspective to the war in Ukraine when compared to the mainstream, corporate media. Before the 2003 Iraq War, Scott gained prominence as a weapons inspector for correctly stating that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction.
Scott Ritter’s most recent book, Disarmament in the Time of Perestroika: Arms Control and the End of the Soviet Union, “is the definitive history of the implementation of the INF Treaty signed by Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan in all its complexities.” The negotiations of the INF Treaty offer a blueprint for how world powers can peacefully negotiate complex situations.

    • You can be ashamed, but the idea that you might caveat it with "as retired military" is very unfunny and ironic and sickening. You took your pay contributing to world disorder, you probably now take the benefits, you are one of those Americans who shame you. You don't get a pass because you finally figured out a few things I've understood since 1972. You want to be ashamed, be ashamed of yourself.

  • I also was a teenager growing up in Russia during 90s. Scott’s assessment is spot on. It breaks my heart that the US chose the path of taking advantage of Russia instead of being a true partner and friend. A lost opportunity for the whole world. When will the world finally learn that rising tide lifts all boats and we should treat each other with respect?

  • What surprises me most is the reaction of Europeans to what is happening. Before my Twitter account was finally gone I tried to argue with a DW journalist about the irrationality of blaming Russia for a conflict that was planted in the heart of Europe by the US for American profit. The journalist immediately blocked me as if I were a repulsive, offensive, aggressive person unworthy of her attention. Some citizens of EU member countries with whom I have been in contact for decades through social networks (Orkut, Multiply, Facebook) are literally being abducted by hatred against Russia. Some of them are capable of denying the existence of Nazis in Ukraine and are deeply irritated when asked about what European countries did (or failed to do) while Lugansk and Donestsk were bombed daily in violation of the peace agreement concluded between Ukraine and Russia. That I think is the most dangerous thing. The toxic effect of the European press (I won't even mention the 'American press', because that's a contradiction in terms) is evident and extremely dangerous at this point. You do an excellent job... but I don't think it will be enough to prevent the worst.

    • With all due respect, this so-called " Proxy " War against Russia, is in fact a War, It was a Was in the making since 2000, when Mr. Putin became the accidental President of the Russian Federation ( Russia ), He was NOT. about to let Russia to become an American Colony, after seeing that afI ter the collapse of the Soviet Union, the West and its allies, were pillaging Russia's Vast Natural Resources Wealth, and creating some Oligarchs along the way ( one, will control the Oil sector, another woud control the Gold mine sector, another would control the Diamond mine sector, another the Platinum mine sector, another the Copper mine sector, etc., etc., etc. ), in doing so it kept the Russian civilians impoverished, when Mr. Putin, became President in 2000. He Nationalized the Natural Resources Wealth, and D C. became infuriated, because the Vast Ammount of Wealth that they were loosing, when in the first place, it Didn't Belong to D C, so of course D C Demonized Mr. Putin, AND. Russia, And that's exactly why we have this War , using Ukraine and her people, to even try to Weaken Russia for her Natural Resources, Some say that D C, doesn't want Russia to become as strong militarily, as the then Soviet Union, and were already planning on how to carve Russia into smaller pieces, so D C, and its allies could manage her easier, Russia was already preparing herself militarily for this War since 2000, but only accelerated from 2014 till the present ( January 6th 2023 ), 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Peace 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I lost many relatives during those days, my Mom cried when she couldn't feed us cause she haven't been paid at her job... We have been doing whatever we could to survive even kids, I will never forget that experience and I will never wish to anyone to go through such situation. But I'm quite amazed deep level of understanding of what exactly happened and Russia's history from Scott. Huge respect for him and his clear vision, USA need people like him. Unfortunately Scott and others who have adequate point of view not in charge, but until guys like him exists in USA we all have chance to minimize damage which occurs right now. Poles, Ukrainians, Germans, Lithuanians, Romanians - hundreds of million of people in Central Europe are thankful for US contribution to dissolution of Soviets. Believe me, I live in Poland my family suffered massively, there is reason why Solidarity movement rose up. Soviets collapsed because they had inefficient central planned economy, no freedom of speech and unsustainable spending on their military - this is communism in reality. That’s why they collapsed and had difficulties in 1990’. Putin came over and said - it is all fault of the West who is trying to bring us down since hundred of years. Populism. • There's this German word "Russlandversteher", which is, paradoxically, self-contradictory. It is someone who "understands" Soviets, and thinking that you can make a deal with them, which is the best proof that he DOES NOT UNDERSTAND Russia AT ALL. Or, in other words, as Churchill reportedly said, "it's like trying to appease a crocodile". One of very few Americans that did "understand" Russia was Gen. Patton, and he wasn't talking such patented nonsense as this guy here. Marquise de Custine in his "Letters from Russia" described pretty accurate the eternal (OK, make it "since XII-XIII century") Russian obsession with conquest, pillage and subversion of other nations, and the most insightful part of that book are quotes of Prince Kozlovsky (if memory serves me), who happened to be a Russian diplomat for awhile. I'm just over three minutes into this dead-brain hogwash and I'm sure watching anymore of it would be a pure waste of time. He's talking about occupied Germany, and that the Soviets wanted "peace" treaty ("peace", my foot...), and the PRECONDITION to it was - effectively - a DEMILITARISED and DEINDUSTRIALISED Germany, i.e. one that COULD NOT fight against Russian planned invasion on Western Europe - but he NEVER REALISES that THIS was te goal of Soviets, NOT "peace". (For them it was like in Orwell's "1984" - "War Is Peace. Freedom Is Slavery. Ignorance Is Strength".) Also, see "Colonel [Polish: Pułkownik] Ryszard Kukliński" and the Soviet Invasion Plans and other top-secret Soviet documents he passed to CIA. And for their Orwellian ways look no further than their main newspaper that was called ПРАВДА (PRAVDA), Russian for The Truth - feck, it was ANYTHING but the truth! Even weather forecast was sometimes false - for instance, for May 1st holiday the weather was always (AFAIK) "predicted" as "nice and balmy". Or check Wiki entry about "Yerevan Jokes" genre... FOR SOVIETS ANY AGREEMENT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE SERVED/ FULFILLED, it was always seen merely as a tool to tie "western hands". I mean, they might have even stick to it and abide by its terms for awhile, but ONLY AS LONG AS IT SERVED THEIR GOALS AND AIMS. The moment they saw it as harmful to their interests (even if just potentially) out of the window it went. Case in point - they declared nuke-free zone made of DDR, Poland (or PRL back then) and Czechoslovakia (CSRS) in order to get some leverage to force Amies' nukes out of BRD (West Germany), which (the US nukes in West Germany) was a serious threat to them. But guess what? Yep, how did you guess it? The kept their nukes in Poland regardless, in Soviet Army bases (like, say, Borne-Sulinowo or Legnica, which were off-limits to anyone from then LWP, or "Peoples Polish Army", including the highest command - unless they were granted permission to enter by Soviet Command). Anyway, this guy is, well... an idiot. Or totally deluded, but to me it's all the same. Or, as Comrade Lenin used to call this type of people, полезный идиот. And that he's saying this NOW, well into full-scale Russo-Ukrainian war, makes him a true hare-brained thinker. "Beware not to be dumbed by your own wisdom", as goes the old Jewish saying.

  • I was born in Russia in 1987 and moved to Lithuania in 1988 when it was part of the Soviet Union. I was a child in 1990s but I still remember how hard it was in Lithuania but in Russia it was even worse, I remember watching Russian news and there were protests all over the country because of delayed wages, some people did not get paid for more than a year, others were paid with the products of the enterprise and had to sell the products themselves in order to survive (enterprises did not had money to pay salaries, people worked for many months without receiving any salary). People did everything to survive, many criminals appeared, people even cut (stealed) power line cables to sell them for scrap. For others, it was a time of opportunity, they illegally privatized strategic enterprises while there was house and anarchy in the country, and became oligarchs. It was a really terrible time.

Imagine Russia setting up shop in Mexico or Canada… how would we react? Better still, what if Texas became independent and then opted to align with Russia? The U.S. would just let that happen unopposed?

  • Once again, we have an American talking about former soviet states entirely like subjects of bigger nations, instead of smaller but independent countries with their own interests and right to self-govern. Framing it as a "NATO expansion" misses the point that this wasn't just NATO unilaterally deciding to expand; this was independent nations, former parts of the soviet union, who just came out of decades of pro-soviet propaganda and russification attempts, and still decided to join NATO instead of aligning with Russia. As for what happened in Russia after leaving the soviet union (yes, they technically "left" the union instead of disbanding it), was a complex clusterfuck where many bad actors screwed over the population. International interests played a massive role in it, but the corruption built up during soviet times also had a big part, and ultimately many of Russias oligarchs weren't greedy foreign investors, but people in position of power that used their influence to secure assets for themselves. Pretending this was entirely a USA-made disaster is just really arrogant. The USA has a *lot* to say in the world, but sometimes, other countries just do things whether the USA wants to or not. And sometimes, this hyper-fixation on "how can we blame the USA for this" just seems like a convoluted cope of people who can't admit to themselves that in the case of the Ukraine war, even the mighty USA was just one player that didn't ultimately failed to control the situation. At the end of the day, one thing remains true: Russia is invading another nation, killing its civilians, deporting its children and destroying its infrastructure. Nothing will ever justify this and Russia will never be "on the right side" of history. Russia is on the same side of history as Nazi Germany.

    • This makes me "cry in my soul" too. As an American I couldn't be more ashamed of America's arrogance and cruelty. Our presidents and oligarchs are hellbent on ruling the entire planet. They don't to want to see any other superpower succeed in any way, even economically. I think that China and Russia both would gladly work WITH us if we only stopped treating them as "threats" that need to be defeated and crushed. The "evils" that our presidents and pundits portray them to be guilty of cannot compare to the evils the American Empire has perpetrated for nearly its entire existence, especially since the end of WW2. Since then, this has become the most destructive nation on the planet, and our presidents and politicians in DC have the audacity to pretend that America always acts on behalf of "democracy and freedom." The only thing that this country acts on behalf of are our capitalist interests and raping the planet and stealing resources for the benefit of the super-rich pigs who are running our government and are now trying to rule and run the world.

One is that "not one inch closer" agreement was verbal basically making it none agreement , that should be considered as Soviets fault for pushing to sign it as a treaty . And two , as Lithuanian I can strongly say that Russia in the past used their Culture and Language as a weapon , hek they tried to Rusify us and even erase our language at one point and we weren't the only victims of that , which is why we celebrated then Soviets collapsed and then we managed to join NATO alliance . There's actually kind of a saying here "NATO didn't move to the East , the East moved to NATO" , the point I'm trying to make is that it shouldn't be surprising ( or at least it isn't surprising for me ) that Ukraine tried to ( partially ) ban Russian language on its land . Search up the pogroms, the gulags, the holodomor, terrorism, Pavel Gubarev, the supression of minorities/cultures/languages/art, the assassination of political opposition leaders, the corruption, the decapitation of pows, the slaughter of civilians, the bucha massacre, the abduction of children, the bombing of hospitals/schools/appartments/......

    • Well yeah. That's Europe. If Ukraine falls Europe is absolutely fucked, why else did Putin invade? It'd be a weird coincidence if for the past 8 years they've been having skirmishes and all of a sudden Ukraine discovers how resource rich it is and Russia invades. This is a war over resources and power.
