How Every Cuphead Boss Got Their Name
This video will discuss how the bosses of Cuphead got their name, with the exception of the DLC bosses (not confirmed), a few of the bosses from the core game that have not been confirmed, and the bosses whose names are obvious (like The Devil, for example).
A massive thank you to my friend Sean for recording the gameplay and for providing several ideas for the editing. This wouldn't have been possible without him.
Thank you all very much for watching my latest video. At the time of writing this description, my last video/first video on Cuphead has almost three-and-a-half thousand views and over 100 likes. All I can say is that this is pretty unbelievable considering that it hasn't even been a week, and especially when you look at the (lack of) success my other uploads have had so far.
More Cuphead content to come! The vast majority of it is gonna look like this, information about the creation of the characters/levels over gameplay. Perhaps I'll make a few about my opinions on some of the fights. Let me know what YOU wanna see!
Another fun fact about Werner werman: during the two world wars, the Germans would colloquially be referred to as 'Jerrys'. So, Werner werman and the cat in his fight technically are a Tom and a Jerry.
Also his initials WW can reference the World Wars
Also the British were called “tommies”
And fritz

4:08 Fun fact: "cala maria" is a double entendre, not only is it a pun on "calamari," "calamaria" is actually a type of snake, referencing her medusa transformation

Fun Fact: The cat in werner wermans fight is called The Katzenwagen, which roughly translates to catwagon or catmobile
It’s literally called “cat cart” bc he drives it
That kinda spoils the fight doesn't it? It also is kinda funny
@@Flinitty you don’t get to see the name in game only on the wiki so if you already played the game like most people here it’s fine
“Quick Robin! To the Cat- ca- uh the Batmobile”
Oh that explains why the cat is a machine in the K.O animation
Fun fact: the devil is the only character that was not actually created by cuphead creators
Or is he..?
excepting dlc characters
Because he is a figure from Abrahamic Religions.
Wouldn’t Baroness von bon bon also be a reference to the fact the she’s a baroness or royalty and the fact that bon bon is French for candy. So she is the Royalty of Candy.
Not also THAT IS THE ACTUAL INSPIRATION
I think Ribby and Croak are also references to Ryu and Ken (hence the fireballs they shoot)
The outfits that Ribby and Croaks where are an homage to them!
they're not fireballs their punches it says in the game files
I thought that too.
@@nickanoah7564 They’re fireball punches. Everyone is right.

The animator referenced for Grim Marchstick, from what I've heard, was also known for having a stutter. Hence Grim stutters whenever he speaks.
In the game files, an NPC refers to Brinybeard as "Bruno." This and generally how he looks is an allusion to Brutus/Bluto from Popeye. Good video, I actually enjoyed this
Thanks man! This really gives me more confidence to make more videos like this. And yeah, you're right! The Art of Cuphead states that Brineybeard's design was based on Bluto!
We don't talk about him.

I really wanted to know who Acorn Maker was named after
Also baroness von bon bon is a reference for some old princess/queen who got be-headed and her last words were “let them eat cake”
That would be Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. The whole 'Let them eat cake' line was attributed to her (supposedly in response to a subject who informed her that many of her people were starving, as they were too poor to afford bread), as an indictment of her obliviousness to the plight of the common man. There's no evidence that she's really the one who said that, though; it could easily have been another noble.
@@theherohartmut Even so, it would explain why one of her attacks is to throw her head
@@nategwright And why she makes a cutting motion across her neck at the beginning of the fight
“Because rabbit” that zoom in when he said that made me dying
Fun fact: The name of Werner Werman's robotic cat is Katzenwagen, which is German for "Cat Cart".
"Chernikov" (with an accent on the "I") is a pun with a russian word "chernika", which means blueberry. And the -ov is a common part of russian male last names
"Hi everybody." GETS HIT LITERALLY IMMEDIATELY
0:43 "Grande" also means big, referencing that he turns big I think
I'm so glad you explained Hopus Pocus' name. I was so worried that you'd skip Hopus Pocus because finding it's name origins are really hard. Thanks man
Mugman’s name may also be a slight homage to NES run n’ gun hero Mega Man. Fitting, because he wears blue as opposed to his brother’s red.

2:33 why did that scare me-
I got scared too actually, but more so because this is part of one of Tom's screams from Tom & Jerry, and it is this specific scream that I hate.
I love how there's so many references to old animation legends and then there's just a bubble bobble reference thrown in.
1:47 This makes me beyond happy, Bubble Bobble is a major childhood game of mine and Baron von Blubba was (and still is) my favorite enemy. He’s just a cute lil guy.
I knew that "Root pack" had to be related to the "Rat pack" thanks for uploading.
2:44 good job this actually got me 😂
Nice video, I didn't know about Werner Werman's pronunciation but it makes sense.
I honestly thought Goopy’s name would be “Goopy The Big” because Grande in Spanish means Large, or Big. (Correct me if I’m wrong-)
it does but it also means great
Grande is big in French btw or it is also in Spanish? Idk French is technically something we all speak from England history I T H I N K
I think this was intentional. It may mean ' the great ' in French, but they paid homage to it meaning ' the big ' in Spanish as well, since he grows bigger in his second phase.
@@artzzdrawzz7460 in French "Grande" means big, so "Goopy La Grande" would mean "Goopy the big". trust me I'm French🤓
@@Madax93 Ohhh, I see. ' Le Grande ' does probably still mean ' The Great ' in another language though.
The devil is the most creative name in cuphead.

I think Baron von Bon Bon's name is also referencing the candy called "Bon Bons"
I love details and facts like this, the video and even the comments have given me so many little tidbits of info that I love.
3:59 that was more so a slight slip up than a stutter. In fact, I didn't even notice the 'stutter' until the text said so and I went back a few seconds to check
I like videos like these cuz one, I get info and it's nice to know some facts and two, all these people are so memorable and it just has this gift of old timey styles which I just love
Glad you enjoyed it!
the 15 fps gameplay is amazing. no i'm joking of course, it's all good. the video quality makes up for the slight quality dip in fps. if somebody is watching on 2x speed they wouldn't even realise.
I always thought ribby and croaks were a reference to Ryu and Ken. Even their names are somewhat similar. Croaks even uses fire in his attacks like Ken does.
Additionally, the design of Ribby & Croaks seems to be a nod to the old "Frog & Toad" books and claymation animations.
Ribby and Croaks are also referencing Ryu and Ken in Street Fighter.
Werner Werman is actually inspired by a German soldier. Verner is slang for a German soldier
Thanks for making this video.

What about Brineybeard and Sally!?
2:23, plays me and my keyboard dead
The Hindenburg was trying to land in NJ?????? I LIVE THERE AND I NEVER KNEW THAT
I remember reading the “I survived” book of it, but I forgot about the NJ part.
Fun fact: the name for the level that has Werner Werman is called "Murine Corps". When pronounced correctly "murine" sounds like "marine" as in a soldier, and murine is another name for a rodent
I think I know something about Hilda Berg's design. I think Hilda Berg's design as a human was inspired by an old TV show named Betty Boop.
4:30 This is my favorite part 😂 Using these as an example if anybody asks for alliteration
His initials a WW1 to reference World War 1, also the cat & mice thing wasn't just a reference to Tom & Jerry by having them both look similar, Germans where actually called Jerrys (Werner Werman 1) and the British where called Tommies, this also some lore as the the war Werman fought in may have been against some tea drinking cats.
2:09 beppi is a funny name 😂😂😂
Fun Fact: Before Studio MDHR gave us the official names of The Root Pack, fans gave out custom names for them: Sal Spudder’s name used to be Moe Tato, Ollie Bulb’s name used to be Weepy, Chauncey Chantenay’s name used to be PsyCarrot and Horace Radiche’s used to be Radish.

Hmmm, I wonder who The Devil got his name after...
2:32 that scream got me dying
Idk why i love the animation for all the bosses?
Also for Ribby and Croaks, they are probably names after Ryu and Ken from street fighter. Because they were fighters, and in video games.
Dr. Khal in the last stage looks like robotnik even the big gem even looks like the emeralds from sonic
Also, when the fight starts, he waggles his eyebrows just like Dr. Wily from the Mega Man series.
All three of these things were referenced when creating Dr. Kahl, as confirmed in The Art of Cuphead!
Thank you Shaun.

2:33 AAA-
1:46 The last part, Von Bon Bon, comes from bonbons, small French chocolate confections usually filled with liqueur or other sweet alcoholic ingredients.
2:48 it's FLY-sher not FLEE-sher. Good video tho 👍
I originally thought Grim matchstick was named after the fact that dragons, or most are grim, and matchstick because matches light fires.
1:23 didn't need to know the backstory but thanks i guess
Fun fact: Ribby and Croaks are also a reference to Ryu and Ken from Street fighter!, And Werner Werman, Is also a play on WW or World War because why not!
Oh. So that's why devil is named devil
It took me a long time to realise that "Saltbaker" sounds like "salt shaker". But I am guessing he's salt because that's modern slang for being frustrated.
because of the cuphead show, i will never see ludwig the same again. everytime that name is said, i just start laughing because, well, mooooooogmaaaan
I would've thought Beppi was inspired by Koko the Clown. And maybe the name Beppi was derived from 'Bepis' because of the red and blue color scheme of the soft drink.
Rumulus is probably a reference to Romulus.
Here are my guesses for the names of some of the dlc bosses Moonshine mob (pretty self-explanatory) Glumstone the giant (stone being a reference to how he is a gold mine right before the fight starts and glum is another term for sad or bland which is fitting since Glumstone never really seems to be joyous during this fight feeling pain when he rips his beard off and being furious when cuphead and mugman beat his second phase) Mortimer freeze (mortimer is an name mainly associated with elderly men which looking at him fits quite well and freeze being a reference to the entire theme of the fight being in the middle of the snow cult) The howling aces (howling being a reference to the fact that they are dogs and aces being a term for someone who is an expert in their field which the aces seem to be excellent aviators also The Howling Aces sound similar to the blue angels another famous group of avaitors Although this doesn’t fit the 1930’s time frame) Chef salt baker (again quite obvious he is a baker that’s also a salt shaker)
4:05 Same thing as with Callie and Marie from Nintendo's Splatoon series.😉🦑
Ribby and Croaks are also based on Ryu and Ken respectively (from Street Fighter)
A DLC one for ya, Doggone Dogfight's third phase, Chinook and Saluki. "Chinook" is a dog breed, but also a helicopter. "Saluki" is also a dog breed.
The chinook saluki doesn't actually have a real name yet and neither do the other characters in hownling aces. Wonder if they will reveal it later
@@mybeaniebooz9601 oh. Still pretty sure the 3rd phase is Chinook-ception though.

You forgot that Werner’s initials are WW1 (he is Werner werman the first)which is a direct reference to world war one
What about the Woman from the theater?- I think she is named Sally Stage play?
"Gooby le grand" isn't french if we say "é" at the end
Also, for it to be proper French, it would have to either be 'le Grand' or 'la Grande'; not 'le Grande'. Regardless, I feel as though his name is some kind of roundabout reference to Pepé le Pew. Instead of being unpleasant to smell, Goopy is unpleasant to touch; he's a slimeball.
I’m pretty sure that djinni the great also is kinda related to genie
More two syllable names from Cuphead: Werner,Cala,Briney,Devil,Ollie,Goopy,Henchman,Cagney, Hilda,Wally, Chalice,Rumor, porkrine, and Sally
I think Mr. Kahl might be a reference to professor eggman.
Can’t believe he freaking skipped the phantom express. :,( Really needed to know why they were named the way they are…

Also he moves his eyebrows like Dr Wily.
I forgot to mention is that Dr. Neo cortex is inspired by the brain from pinky and the brain

Baroness Von Bon Bon is also based on Queen Antoinette. She removes her head and is associated with cake because of the lie of Queen Antoinette famously saying “Let them eat cake”
