When Maya Hawke’s famous parents got divorced, she was just a little kid trying to navigate their newly separate worlds. Paparazzi aside, Maya’s experience of shuttling between two homes was still more common than the arrangement described in the essay Maya reads: “Our Kinder, Gentler, Nobody-Moves-Out Divorce, (www.nytimes.com/2022/01/14/st...) ” by Jordana Jacobs.
By staying under one roof, Jacobs and her ex-husband spared their young son the distress of having to go back and forth. But this “dad upstairs, mom downstairs” arrangement also meant that Jacobs had to overhear her ex falling in love with his new partner.
Today, Hawke reflects on the bittersweet family portrait in Jacobs’s essay, and on divorce’s role in Hawke’s own upbringing.
Maya’s latest album, “Chaos Angel (www.mayahawkemusic.com/) ,” drops May 31.

  • "Sunday goodbyes" and "transition days" oh god, it hits so close to home. Parents, please remember, if both parents love their kids, their kids want to be in close presence / access to both their parents as much as possible. It boggles my mind that they can trust each other to live together separately (which seems as complicated as a marriage) but still couldn't get themselves together to maintain their marriage (I'm sure there was something there but still boggles my mind).

  • It seems to me that you would want a divorce if you wanted to press the reset button on your life--or, at the very least, to stop living with someone you don't want to be around anymore (for whatever reason). Staying together "for the children" (or whatever reason one supplies in one's mind) is just basically called "marriage." By the way, Maya's an excellent book reader. I mean, she could do that professionally, too: a greatly, multi-talented individual!
