Great apes, including bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), demonstrate long-lasting social memory, as shown in an experiment where a bonobo recognized her sister after 26 years of separation. This marks the "longest-lasting nonhuman social memory" documented in scientific records.
Researchers used eye-tracking cameras to observe the apes' reactions to photos of familiar and unfamiliar individuals.
The study found that the strength of the relationship between two individuals influences recognition, with more positive relationships leading to increased attention.
