  • Have you ever tried soaking or fermenting your feed - for any of your animals? I found that my chickens wasted much less and looked healthier when I soaked my feed overnight with a starter like apple cider vinegar or kefir\yogurt. Doing that cut my feed bill 25% to 50% - depending on the time of year. Now that I live up north, I don't soak feed for the ducks and geese in the winter (so the feed doesn't freeze), but I do feed them right next to buckets or tubs of water. In warm weather, they _really_ like wet feed.

    • I grow lots of sprouts and wheatgrass to feed to them but I've never tried fermenting any of the feed. Do you think it increases the protein content?

      @DaybirdAviaries@DaybirdAviaries5 жыл бұрын
    • I know that it makes several components more bioavailable and lit can leach out antinutrients in legumes. I do know my feed bill went down and my birds looked better,

    @gilhamhomestead@gilhamhomestead2 жыл бұрын
    • Well, technically no. But I do. Bucks can develop urinary stones from too many minerals in grain. It has to do with the calcium and phosphorus ratios. Cog Hill recently talked a bit about it. Jason said there are special mixes he buys to feed his bucks that prevent that. I've been using this mix for many years now with no problem but that doesn't mean that you won't have issues. Check with Rose at Wholesome Roots farm. She's the goat guru.

  • Do you think turkeys, and ducks would like this mix? I want goats, but we have chickens, turkeys, ducks and guineas. It would be nice if I could find a feed to supply most if not all of them what they need. All my poultry forage, though, so that's good. Even my broad breasted turkeys go crazy for bugs and grass seed.
