Israel & Palestine | The Politics of War | Victor Davis Hanson

John is joined by military historian Victor Davis Hanson to discuss the escalating conflict in the Middle East. This conversation was recorded on Wednesday the 18th of October.
Hanson argues that Israel is in a unique position to retaliate unencumbered by American opposition, due to the bi-partisan support it currently has in the US. However, he contends that conflicts like this, and others such as the war in Ukraine, would probably not have transpired had President Trump still been at the helm.
Victor Davis Hanson is an American classicist, military historian, columnist, and farmer. He has been a commentator on contemporary politics for the National Review and The Washington Times and is currently the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.
In addition to writing hundreds of articles, book reviews and newspaper editorials, Hanson is also the author of twenty-four books and hosts a regular podcast series, 'The Victor Davis Hanson Show'. Hanson was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2007 by President George W. Bush, and was a presidential appointee in 2007-08 on the American Battle Monuments Commission. His latest book, The Dying Citizen, was published in October 2021.

I was there to be a history teacher and was constantly criticized and attacked because i would noy assimilate to their socialist/communist views on history. It probably worked out for the best though as i make far more money as the co-owner of a concrete finishing business. I will never send my son to a university to get a useless degree. I will teach him my trade or send him to a trade school where he will actually have a future.

I then came across this podcast and I have hope again! Our country is being destroyed by other cultures that want handouts but won’t integrate with our way of thinking. It's clear he can't. S.A.D has never represented the international community. In fact, the international community considers the U.S. the biggest threat to peace! I think the U.S. should stop meddling internationally and should focus on getting their own country together first. Then, in a few decades, we can let them re-enter the UN. Because they scream America first, but it's never really America first, right? Maybe we should bring some democracy to S.A.D. Now it is too late for you to do anything because you are close to bankruptcy. I respect Russia and China because they have shown that they have a moral compass towards human life. The world is tired of the west. The U.S. needs the intervention of humanity. They must stop their bullying and international blackmail schemes. Neither money nor power are important in this court, because only the purity of the soul and the sincerity of our actions count. As a European, a Catholic, I see things that way.

  • I worked in industry prior to becoming a chem professor at a liberal university. The best way I can describe that transition was that I had entered an insane asylum. Industry (at least while I was working there) was all about getting the job done and done well. I had nothing but good things to say about the people (mostly men) that I worked with. I felt respected and valued. In contrast, the university was all about individuals and their egos. Faculty members would torpedo their own faculty, departments, students and even the university itself to get their own way and there were NO consequences for their actions. I used to describe it as the Roman Colosseum where either you were down on the floor fighting or in the stands cheering for your side. Students, temporary and untenured faculty were used as foot soldiers. When I spoke up I was told I was the problem. I have been retired for some time but I must admit there is some comfort in finally seeing faculty to be shown for what they are. At the same time, I am fearful since I am fully aware of the lengths they will go to win and that they have no regard for the consequences. They will NEVER admit they are wrong.

    • I too was, far a short while after retirement, an adjunct professor (of economics and banking). The attention span and the devotion to learning of the students was surprisingly lacking. I was naïve in believing that young minds would borrow or be given from parents the funds, and then do homework and would respond and participate in class discussions. Their grades showed they did not. They also seemed to be offended at not given a passing grade. Of course, as an adjunct professor, I was an "at will" employee. I failed "too many of those in my classes over a longer period that reasonable!" God bless Dr. Hanson and Condoleezza Rice for bringing morality back to education. May we pray it takes root.

Anyone who believes Israel has been "restrained" in its treatment of Palestinians needs only to take a look at what has been happening in occupied West Bank and Gaza for decades. From land theft, settler lawlessness ignored by authorities, extra-judicial killings by the IDF, an Israeli permit system designed to cripple the life of Palestinians in every conceivable way, livestock turnstiles that Palestinians have to go through to be able to cross the street, and to many daily humiliations that are just common place - the causes of violence are plain to see for anyone that wants to understand. Fair warning, if you do decide to do some research into the treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories, be prepared to be shocked to the core. If you don't want to have nightmares, stick with what is on TV, don't look beneath the surface.

Because he was buddies with Putin would have not stopped the psychopath Putin from invading Ukraine. Trump was a trigger happy President especially when he got offended in some way, and had to be called down by his Generals to not take action numerous times. I would like to see an interviewer that actually would challenge what this guy was saying.

  • This was my second viewing of this episode. I want to congratulate both John and Victor for articulating these issues so perfectly. I agree completely with absolutely everything they said. Millions of Americans, Australians, and free peoples all over the world share your views. You speak for all of us in crystal clarity about the bedrock morality of our Western Civilization which is so imperiled worldwide today. There are powerful global institutions arrayed against us, masquerading under a cynical banner of "peace and social justice" when what they clandestinely really want is authoritarian power and suppression of all dissent. Despite the dark tragedy of what the animalistic barbarians did on October 7th, Victor has given us hope that the silent majority in the free world is waking up to the reality of the existential threat facing all of us who at least vaguely comprehend the values of the Enlightenment that underpins our democratic societies. If we can translate that anxiety and understanding into political activism, we might, just might, fend off further descent into worldwide barbarism and inhumanity. I pray that Victor and John's tenuous optimism comes to fruition. Victor says that it won't be easy, but that he believes that it can be done. Amen.
