  • There is a documentary that showed an Elephant Memorial. A female had protected the herd from a poacher but taken a shot to the side. She suffered for a few days and her family/herd wouldn’t leave her until she finally died. Weeks (possibly months, I don’t remember exactly) the herd came back and one by one slowly and very gentle touched their dead family member’s bones. It was literally a funeral/remembrance for her. Absolutely Amazing. That is a Truly Amazing level of Intellectual and Emotional Intelligence.

    • fighterpimp: You are extremely uneducated when it comes to animal behavior and how it relates to intelligence and instinct. Amazing intelligence is displayed here. First it’s a unique situation that the matriarch almost certainly hadn’t encountered before. Secondly the way she turned and righted the young one is insightful. Lastly the way the herd acted together and circled and protected the young one and matriarch is very strategic. That strategy is common among elephants. You’re probably not intelligence enough to understand that this displays past learning and working out the simple puzzle of the trapped youngster demonstrates problem solving. This is not instinct. To test you I give you a fairly new pack of wolves as an example. Stalking a deer in early winter. As months progress is the pack likely to become more efficient at killing deer? Will they stalk and attack the same way in November as the following March? What is the instinct part of the equation? What is not? Careful now. I am an expert with several advanced degrees and real world experience.

    • It’s really easy for us to point our fingers at poachers in 3rd world countries and think they’re evil. But when you live in abject poverty with your family going hungry it’s not difficult to make a choice like that. People against poaching need to donate to create resources that will pay these same people to NOT poach. You can’t sit in your air conditioned home with a stocked refrigerator and tell someone in poverty not to do something that will help them drastically. I do realize that not all poachers are poor and starving and to the ones that aren’t , that just enjoying killing these wonderful creatures for the thrill of it, they are indeed evil. But I’d bet most are just in desperate need of money.

We're supposed to protect each other- it takes a herd of elephants to raise a calf. That's not what's going on in our world with humans. We have predators within our own species preying on other humans If some of those elephants had human tendencies, they wouldn't have helped, but whipped out their smartphones and filmed the young elephant getting attacked by a lion we should learn lessons from animals with fewer chromosomes.
