24 References you missed in the New Netflix Cuphead Trailer
The new Netflix Cuphead trailer is fantastic! I comb through the trailer frame by frame to look at what's a reference to the actual Cuphead game here.
REMEMBER, I didn't point out the super obvious ones (like yes I can see Captain Brineybeard, Cala Maria, and Grim in the first frame. Everyone can see that!) but instead focusing on stuff that might be a little more obscure.
You can watch the full trailer here: • THE CUPHEAD SHOW! | Of...
-- THINGS I'VE MISSED SO FAR (from the comments section) --
1. Skeletons from #5 are from Spooky Scary Skeletons! They also show up in the casino during the Cuphead intro cutscene
2. One of the ghosts in #20 is one of the ghost rats from Werner Werman!
3. I think I said movie by mistake somewhere in there... I meant show!
HEY! I'm adding all the stuff I missed up into the description! Make sure you go check em out! Thanks to everyone in the comments for pointing them out!
I’m Honestly so excited For this show ! Can’t wait 🔥
Same
4:40 you can see the rat from the original game the bottem of the ghost
The ghost on the bottom right is the rat ghost in the final stage of Werner wermam
Dude no way that’s a crazy reference he missed
Fun Fact: The character known as “The Devil” in the trailer is a subtle reference to one of the bosses in the game also known as the Devil.
pretty much a tldw of this video
Bruh
No sh*t sherlock
Fun Fact: The cups in the trailer is a subtle reference to the main characters of the game Cuphead and Mugman
@@melisanasrullah361 basically the same as this comment lol
Love how they added a bunch of references for fans. They even added some nods to older cartoons, like a few backround characters that look like Bimbo the Dog, Felix the Cat, and the Saxophone from Music Land! Can't wait to see the series and even more references in just under a month!
I noticed Felix! But I wasn't sure about the others! I love what they've done in this trailer!
The skeletons shown in that mausoleum section were direct references to the skeleton dance and the way skeletons were designed by ub iwerks in flip the frog shorts, most notably "Spooks" (Iwerks who was paid a small tribute to in perilous piers with one of the background buildings named after him)
@@JustoAllDay in one i saw waldo the lucky rabbid idk if thats his name
I also saw Oswald the lucky rabbit =D
@@JustoAllDay it's the show not the movie
One of my favorite references from the show to the game is in the Root Pack episode, when Cuphead gets an idea, his straw separates from his head and forms an exclaimation point in the exact same manner it does when he drinks Elder Kettle's potion at the beginning of the game! The same also applies when you open the game past 100% completion, at least it does with Mugman...
doesnt his straw do that multiple times?
The fact that this entire series is heavily influenced by old fashioned cartoons from the 1920' & 30's makes it feel like even in the modern times we can't forget what made cartoons so great in the first place.
It’s really amazing how this little indie game is getting so much love! I’m really excited for this, can’t wait!
Me too!
@@JustoAllDay I love how you said movie
Wha???
#20 one of the ghosts is also one of the rat ghosts that appears in Werner werman's fight
I KNEW IT LOOKED FAMILIAR! Good catch!
@@JustoAllDay you're welcome dude 😎
@@JustoAllDay same i thought it was from the game
I saw it too
I saw that too and I was quite excited
You forgot 2 things 1.Grim has his 3 heads always visible ingame he has 1 till his 3rd phase 2.Grim Jr. has 3 heads and look nothing similiar
1:07 Betty Beet, one of the Root Pack members who was removed prior to the game's release is seen on the stage.
There’s also the rat ghost from Werner Werman’s fight with all the other ghosts
Was gonna comment this!
I did
@@Kitnick. Saaame i wrote this to
thx now i saw
Im finally not the only one who noticed this
4:36 below that ghost with a hat and a big nose, you can see a rat ghost from Werner Werman's robot cat phase
1:31 Those are actually the 5 skeletons, from that one old cartoon when they weirdly danced. (Silly siphonies)
You missed this reference.when cuphead is throwing the balls in soul ball,he pulls up his shorts with a smug look, this is a reference to one of his start up animations inside of the game :)
You missed one, there’s a secret radish boss in the original game, and in the background you can see her preforming with the other vegetables. 1:15 Also this isn’t a reference to Cuphead, but the skeletons here is a reference to Spooky Scary Skeletons I believe 1:28
yes but no, the skeletons are actually from an early Disney animation called the skeleton dance, but the animation is commonly attributed to spooky scary skeletons
@@evandrennon3534 oh, how interesting... thx for letting me now! 😄💖
Actually that might be betty beet. Shes mentioned in the art of cuphead book
@@meadowduran6057 yeah, that’s who I meant
Or the skeleton are the ones from that old Mickey Mouse show and they dance the same way in the show :0 am I spitting facts tho
5:23 the turtle in the crowd is the same turtle that gives you the black and white screen when you complete the run and gun levels on pacifist
Nah he looks 20 years older
In the part with the ghosts, you can see a rat ghost, one of the ones from murine corps, Werner wermin's level.
@@aspeythefox3444 oh wow, I'm blind :D Sorry about that lol
@@aspeythefox3444 Oki, thanks for telling me :)
There’s also a saxophone in the scene where they were performing and I think there’s another scene from the trailer but I forgot lol, that looks identical in a Silly Symphonies cartoon called “Music Land”. As one of the main protagonist, is the Prince of Jazz Isle (the Saxophone). Idk if he actually has a real name (You can look it up. It’s one of my favorite silly symphonies cartoon. Prolly cuz I’m a band student and seeing a romeo and juliet type of love story always entertains me)
1:46 you can actually see the tuba from the run and gun here aswell also at 4:38 right below the top hat ghost you can see the rat ghost the Werner werman uses in his final phase
This show will definitely be a treasure trove of references for fans of the show.
How is it a reference if it is the same brand
Do you mean of the game?
@@psycless well netflix didn't make the game, did they?
#5 reminds me of The Skeleton Dance from Silly Symphonies
SpOOKy sCaRy SkeLeToNs
A good amount of the ghost in the scene that you pointed out or actually from other fights
On #20 when you mentioned the Phantom Express ghost and the two mausoleum, there’s also a ghost from phase/part 3 of Werner Werman’s battle!
Considering the lava and volcano behind the egg, I think the egg can only be the baby grim matchstick
0:01 THE CUPHEAD MOVIE?!?!
4:21 Imma put this out there, the little Cagneys also remind me of the little flowers from the run n' gun level ''Forest Follies''
Fun fact: The character “the devil” is kind of based off of the devil also known as satan from hell
4:55 #22 - Those saxophones are a direct reference to the characters from the 1935 Silly Symphonies short "Music Land" by Walt Disney. There is also a statue in Inkwell Isle 3 referencing this as well.
4:32 another ghost you missed in the bottom right the ghost rat is from isle 3 from that rat boss also called Werner werman
Where do you see it? I wanna see
@@squirrelmeat7603 botton right corner
At 4:33 you can also see the ghost rat which is a throwback to Werner Wermen in his final phase when the cat spits out rat ghosts.
4:43 There’s also the mouse ghost from that one cat robot thing mouse (IDK HIS NAME) 5:24 The car in the bottom right looks a lot like that old cartoon of a cat called felix, And when that part while King dice is picking a person to go up, Like that guy who was like “yay” but he sounded tired and bored, I noticed something (I think it was northwest pointing but I noticed that there is Oswald. Also another thing in 5:24 is that above the Felix cat guy it looks like that one turtle that was fishing or sitting on a deck I can’t remember.
4:41 under spectre stndicate is the ghost that Werner werman summons in his last phase
4:09 I think the egg may belong to Grim, since in the other scene they bring a giant egg-shaped bag to Porkgrind's and that leads to Grim burning the house. The baby probably hatches during that.
Tru
Sorry, but I highly doubt that it's Grim. Firstly, Grim is a male, and to have that egg, this Grim would have to have been female. And secondly, there is very little chance that they'd give someone like Grim, with his interesting personality, such a minor role.
@@aurorawizard7045 Watch the show and you'll see! Also who said he cant have a mate in the show? Or that babies cant be brought by storks in this universe? Or that Grim isn't a species that can reproduce asexually? 😄
@@aurorawizard7045 Also you can see him holding the baby when he burns the house
@@mullisaukko423 Did they actually say his name was Grim Matchstick, though?
Also another one for #20. I think the ghost in the top right corner is one of the horses from one of those mini bosses in the casino
I saw Pip and Dot in the king dice game show crowd. Oh and also, the phantom express ghost wasn’t the only thing there, there was also the ghost mouse from the 3rd phase of Werner Werman on the opposite side. Also the mausoleum ghost that splits up into more ghosts.
The skeltons seem to be based on the one you see in the casino during the opening cutscene
I think there based on the Disney silly symphony, skeleton dance
sure or thats just how they draw skeletons
0:39 here you see a goat the closely resembles that goat from steamboat willie. the one that mickey used to play music
2:50 that horse and horse shoe reminds me more of Beppis horse phase in isle 2 And 4:40 there is a Rat Ghost as a call back too the Ghost Rats in Isle 3 with Werman Werner (or however ya spell it)
sup justo loved the show congrats on 10k yo will hit a hundred k soon :)
You missed one ghost, you can see the rat on the bottom right, it’s from that mouse boss fight when you fight that Cat 4:41
First I know this show isn’t necessarily canon however since we don’t know much here’s a theory Grim doesn’t turn into a flamethrower to attack and king dice seems to run his own show separate from the devil so what if this show takes place before most of the residence gamble there souls away and before the game starts
2:51 the horse on porkrines boom thingy is from Cuphead game beppi the clown boss fight when beppi rides charlie
On episode 10 (dangerous mugman) when porkrind is giving them a dangerous task, you can see the weapons and charms of the game: Chaser, Spread, Heart and Roundabout
Ya' Missed one... 4:26 there's a Ghost that Katzenvagen uses in Murine Corps in the Bottom-Right!
Finally! Someone who noticed the water person! Almost everyone didn’t know what that thing was!
4:36 also the ghost riding the horse looks kinda like that minion in Phear laps’s fight (i forgot his name) (the one who jumps off the horse and goes up at you)
The first meet with King Dice "sprinkle sprinkle little bar" is from the character Cheese in Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. "Sprinkle sprinkle little bar what I wonder is a cat."
forgot this game existed and used to be really in love with the universe of cuphead
In #21 the moon in the back seems to resemble Hilda Berg, she transforms into a crescent moon for the final phase of the boss, and her death quote says, (something along the lines of) “I haven’t even gone half moon” Implying she can transform into all phases
At 4:38 in the top right corner, you can see the horse that is at the bottom of the screen from the king dice battle! You can also see in the bottom right corner the rat ghost from Werner Werman’s last phase!
The soul sucked out reminded me of a super move in the video game, too.
@JustoAllDay Considering the lava and volcano behind the egg, I think the egg can only be the baby grim matchstick 4:14
I think you missed a reference. When the devil first appears, the crowd in carnEVIL immediately runs away and the last one in the crowd who runs away really resembles the appearance of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. It’s gotta be a reference. I also noticed Felix the cat. One more thing, in the ghost scene one of the ghosts to the top of the screen kinda looks like that one green muppet with the orange beard and the gold teeth. It might just be me who thinks that but who knows.
For those who don’t know who who Oswald and Felix are they were 1930s cartoon characters before Mickey
AMAZING VID KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK!!!
Pip and Dot appear in episode 12 and 5. It references how the person with the 12 always goes first in Dominos.
1:23 I'm pretty sure it's the only spooky scary skeletons ref
There is a reference on the epsode of the sweater, where the 8 ball from king dice boss fight can be seen on the background
I don't know if you have made other parts but that part with all of those ghost chasing at Cuphead and Mugman the rat ghost from the mouse boss is there too
5:18 the room with the eyes somehow reminds me of funhouse frazzle run n gun level.
In the ghost part, you can also see the ghost of a emprisoned mouse from the cat and mouse boss fight in the bottom right corner.
There is another one, along with the phantom express and the mausoleum ghosts, also in the bottom you can see the ghost from the level murine corps where Werner wermans ghost from the third phase.
I actually noticed the cute little miniature cagney Carnation flowers this morning when I was watching the show!
In the root pack scene where it’s all the vegetables on stage there is a beetroot and I think it’s a reference to the secret beetroot in the root pack level
wow, very impressive
Thanks!
3:18 I like to think that that's actually a variant of Grim's species. I like to think that in series two, the real Grim meets Cuphead and Mugman, who make friends with him and help him reach his true potential (when he has three heads)
Wow what a pretty cool thing I watch them when I was little I just went gone so he downloaded again this time it was the other season I want the old one back
Can we give a huge props to the animators sacrificing there hands for this show
2:50 I think the horse shoe might also be referencing the beppi the clown horse shoe phase
This might be one or it can just be a design change but The fat demon’s glove is yellow in the show but white in the game and that might be a reference because just like the game Cuphead and Mugman sometimes change colours on their boots or gloves as you can see at 5:56. Also great video !
The video is 5:48 long.. where can you see that?
4:53 look at the moon, it looks like the boss who at the end starts transforming into a moon (I don't remember her name) but here, it looks like she turned into a full moon, I'm not really sure if it's actually a reference to the normal game, but I'm just saying that I noticed that.
Hilda Berg I remember her name because it's a play in words to the name "Hindenburg"
@@capital_of_texas Thank you for telling me the name.
I think it's just a coincidence, but it's not a bad point you have.
Correct me if I'm wrong but at 4:33, the ghost resembling a mouse on the bottom right kinda looks like one of the ''ghost prisoner'' mice that are used as an attack/phase when fighting the cat and mouse boss. Not too sure what the name of the boss was :)
ur right
When elder kettle pick cup head up when mugman lost his handle it looks like when the cup head dies and the ghost come out it has the same hands and he closes his eyes( mugman did the same thing but in a different episode ) , and also in the beginning he does the starting animation when cuphead is about to fight
In the episode with all the vegetables when it's like turning the camera we can see the radish from the game which can be seen if you ignore the onion he won't attack you and just spawn the carrot aswell as a little radish
Great video, although from what I know there is 1 thing you missed. 4:37 if you look at the bottom right corner, you see the rat ghost. This is a reference to Werner werman final boss fight in the level “Murine corps”. Katzenwagen. Releases These rats in jail clothing to fire orb at you. Totally subscribing.
You deserve more subs
Aw thanks!
In number 10 some of the spectators at king dice seem to be a cupcake (which could be a reference to baroness von bon bon) and an acorn (which could be a reference to the acorn enemies in forest follies)
One thing I noticed is that there is a rat ghost in the bottom right in the ghost part where you pointed the spectre syndicate out, which could be one of the ghosts that come out of the cat's mouth in the Werner Werman the rat's fight.
you forgot to mention the rat ghost from Werner werman's battle. he is under the other 2 ghosts you mentioned.
I realized the bottom right ghost is from the the mouse boss where you are at the cat phase with the dead mouses
in the ghost scene you can also see the rat ghost from warner wermans boss fight
In the scene where there is chip bettigan on the other side there is a trumpet that might be a reference to the trumpet in the run and gun stage
You actually missed the Rat ghost from the rat and cat boss fight (I forgot his name’
His name's Werner Werman!
@@kermitle ok
Yeah, you did miss one of the ghosts with the phantom express ghost. One of them is the rat ghost from phase 3 of Werner Werman’s Fight
One of the The Phantom express ghosts(top left mentioned) looks like the monster from Pan’s Labyrinth
5:27 I think I found a reference to Oswald the lucky rabbit? As they ran from the Devil I’m not so sure but the blue shorts and the rabbit-like form look very familiar
Don’t forget when mugman is putting Cupheads soul back in him and slaps his chest it sounds like he’s parrying
Oh that's clever!
@@JustoAllDay I know, this show is going to be so good
The turtle npc can be seen running in the background at 5:25 and the wally warbles ghost is also in the ghost seen on the right
In the first episode (9:19) when cuphead and mugman are running while the doors shut behind them, i feel like that could be a reference from toy story 2 when buzz runs away from the spikes.
The ghosts in #20, look all the way up to the top right hand corner. That ghost looks somewhat similar to the phantoms that attack you on phear laps mini boss fight.
I forget where I saw it but there's a clip of cuphead playing some kind of ball toss game at the carnival and before he starts he grabs his pants and pulls then up a bit, just like he does in the game before each boss fight. Also the balls he uses are the same balls as the lobber shot you can unlock in the game
A RL reference at 2:52, Porkrind is writing with a Ticonderoga pencil. Maybe the animators apparently like designing with these? After Blackwings, def my brand of choice.
I think it’s episode 10 when porkrind is daydreaming about smashing cuphead and mugman for like 2 frames you can see some of the upgrades that you buy in the game on his desk off the the left (sorry if I didn’t explain very well)
Cuphaed has evolved so much like first a game then a show and theres now coming a dlc
I believe I saw Pip and Dot in the audience of Dice's show. I think I saw an Oswald reference somewhere as well, but I can;t remember where.
On the part when the ghost are chasing Cuphead and Mugman, on the bottom right there are the rat ghost from Murine Corps ( Werner Werman level)
In the roll the dice episode for a brief second you can see the dominoe couple from the king dice fight in the audience right before cuphead is chosen as next contestant
The turtle from the medusa girl in that last clip you showed during the outro!
2:52This horse looks just like Beppi's Charlie! !Moreover, Tumbler Beppi was in the newspaper that Mugman had!The theory that Beppi will appear in Season 3 is convincing! ! !yay! !
Where the ghosts are with the phantom express at the bottom right there’s one of Werner wermans attacks
Fun Fact Justo, The sound from the Ribby and croaks boss fight in the game plays during their time on screen on the show
1:14 The musical instrument is played by a secret mini boss with the level of botanic panic, radish Horace
