Cuphead should be remembered as a one of a kind masterpiece.
@@sarahandluna7417 it was amazing now I’m hyped for season 2
@@PiglooMiguel ikr same! It was awesome
You missed one big one: the game's entire premise of settling gambling debts by doing a deal with the devil is a reference to how pre-Hays code cartoons weren't required to be family friendly, hence why we got works such as 'Swing, You Sinners' that focused on darker, adult settings. Depicting gambling as a major no-no in cartoons was also popular during the 1930's since gambling was seen as an extremely prideful show of excess by those affected by the Depression.
Wow you do know a lot the 1930s
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost the login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me

Cuphead:"Shoots train" Scary train:"BRAKES IN HALF Cuphead: ITS MADE OUT OF LEGOS?
This deserves more likes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@TheUltima_Werewolf Thank you
Yeah its made of lego from lego train
I thought this was a normal comment BUT IT WAS YOU, DIO!
You again
I absolutely LOVE 1930's cartoons! This was very interesting to watch and learn a few things.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Same I was once insanely into Betty boop
Me too
@@TheLeaderboard calamari isn't a fried dish, it means squids in many languages
The robot is obviously a reference to “the iron giant”
- BBZ/BDO that’s what I was gonna say lol
- BBZ/BDO l
It's both
Nah mate. It's obviously a reference to Moby from Tim and Moby.
I was gonna comment that then i saw your comment
The flower boss has a Yoshi’s island reference. The dandelions he throws at you make you dizzy when you get hit. Touch fuzzy, get dizzy...
Dandelions? Those blue and pinky things in stage one?
@@andrejz8954 no the last stage of the boss there will be pink and white dandelions
8:04 yes they are the frog brothers were modeled after Ken and Ryu and in their third form which is a slot machine you see bison, snake, and tiger referencing the three bosses. Also Dr Khal's third form is referencing Dr. Robotnik the robot was holding a gem I don't see how you can miss that.
And dr zomboss
Some of these “references” seem VERY far fetched and I feel like the scripted had no idea what it was a reference to 🤣
I honestly was going to say the same thing. 😅
09:28 - an angel from resembling Kefka? That just seems to be pulled out from where the sun doesn't shine.
Yet they miss obvious ones like cala maria medusa and baroness von bon bons last stage being a reference to marie antoinette
And something that needs to be pointed out, the middle of the jawbreaker, the Pac-Man Easter egg, looks alot like an Orbanuat, an Badnik from Sonic
♑♑♑♑♑♑♑ ♑♑♑♑♑♑♑ ⛊⛊♑♑♑⛊⛊ ♑♑♑♑♑♑♑ ♑⛊⛊⛊⛊⛊♑ ♑♑⛊⛊⛊♑♑ ♑♑♑♑♑♑♑
Just want to say that the Phase 3 of Dr. Khal's fight would fit more with Eggman from the Sonic franchise. Reasons? 1. Both Eggman and Khal are evil scientist who build robots 2. Eggman also flies in a robotic and round UFO like ship (Eggman probably got it from Mario, or vice-versa) 3. One specific and very noticeable attack from Khal uses a gem that the robot pulls from his mouth (9:01). I believe that this is a reference to the Chaos Emeralds, which Eggman uses to powers his machines and cause mass destruction. Since the robot pulled the gem from within its own body and returns it when done, I would assume that the gem (which looks like a Chaos Emerald, mind you) somehow has to do with powering the vehicle itself. TLDR: There's more evidence referencing to Eggman than there is to Bowser.
Yeah, he seems like he's supposed to be a hybrid of Dr. Wily & Dr. Robotnik.
What about that enemy from junkyard nice that goes in a slithering snake line he looks like one those enemies from gradius you know a space shooting game own by konami
thank you. i thought nobody would mark this reference
It's Dr Wily his design
@@mekaboo318 ?
How could you miss the gem. (Witch is obviously based on a chaos emerald from almost every sonic game) 9:03
ur joking right?
And dr. kahl more closely resembles dr. Robotnik /Eggman
Dr kahl’s robot is soo much alike from the Iron Giant movie
WTF are you talking about every gem looks like that just because they are different colors does not mean they are chaos emeralds.
m.k. d. Sort of not really? The only thing they have in common is being a mad doctor.
The game is a pure masterpiece.
You missed an easter egg. The waffle mini boss' death animation might be a reference to mega man's death animation
Total dramarama fan?
I get it
*gasp
Fun fact: Brtitish soldiers were called Tommies in WW1 and German soldiers were called Gerries, which is likely the inspiration for Tom and Jerry. That probably explain why Werner Werman speaks in a German accent and looks like a German soldier down to the helmet. The soup tank is not only a reference to Campbell’s but also the fact that Gerries would often eat soup when food rations were low. There’s even a British flag there.
Fantastic info thank you
you missed the Tom and Jerry reference
Yes.
Yes
The shaggy reference
And the Raiders of the Lost Ark reference in Phantom Express where the faces of the lollipop men kinda... melt
William K it was still based on Tom and jerry
Really interesting...one minor easter egg you guys didn't mention though is how Calamaria's head floats in medusa form, much like Castlevania! But I love all the background references, Cuphead is truly a masterpiece :3
I love the King Dice “dissapear” pretty like that “spooky ghost” singer in that weird betty boop ghost animation xD
You've left out that Cuphead mischievous personality and his color appearance is also based on Mickey Mouse, in his early years and which is red. Plus in one of the circus/carnival levels theres a magical based enemy that shoots out magical circles and disappear and reappearing pattern based on a Magikoopa from Super Mario World.
...
not to mention the music
Actually his color was meant to reference Contra’s 1 and 2 player color scheme.
2:19 I KNEW I recognized Elder Kettle from somewhere!
You said the bowser reference, but I think it was much more likely a Dr Eggman reference, especially since he’s using a jewel to attack
Phantom express? SPOOKY SCARY SKELETONS!
HERE ARE SOME MORE EASTER EGGS! Back to Ribby and Croaks, while their taunts are based on Ken & Akuma. Their colors are nods to Ken & Ryu. Also, the color of the frogs themselves are a nod to the characters from the "Frog & Toad" books by Arnold Lobel. Grim Matchstick, the Dragon himself is based on the "Mecha Dragon" boss from MegaMan 2, in Wily's Castle Sally Stageplay's name actually comes from another cartoon lady known as "Sally Swing" who was a failed attempt to create a new character like Betty Boop based on the emerging swing music style. Beppi the Clown, is most likely inspired by the character "Koko the Clown", who is a character in Max Fleischer cartoons. There was also a Casino Boss, cut from the game, who was based on "Pachinko" gambling but was cut due to unknown reasons. Hilda Berg's Zodiac Transformations (not just the Taurus form) but also Gemini, and Sagittarius came from the same game as the Taurus transformation. Also Werner Wermen is inspired by "Mortimer Mouse" Mickey's forgotten antagonist/rival. He's also inspired by Jerry from "Tom & Jerry". Even the Cat is very similar to Tom's older look. While the characters themselves are from the 1940's. You can see & hear the inspirations as well. Even down to the "scream" Werner makes when the cat eats him. The Giant Cyclops from the "Rugged Ridge" is also inspired by The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Which was a stop-motion movie, animated by Ray Harryhousen. Dr. Kahl's Robot, is also inspired by The Iron Giant. While the movie itself is from 1999. Who says the references only had to stick with 1930s. Speaking of Dr. Kahl's Robot. The Music set in this stage, is a remixed version of the theme from the 2014 Trailer for Cuphead. Which is fitting consiering we're in a Junkyard, and it's being "recycled" for this boss fight. Goopy Le Grande, while he's inspired by the Slime. There are also other Dragon Quest references associated with him. During the final phase, He turns into a tombstone. Which is what happens whenever a member of your party dies. Also in previous versions of his fight, you could see a castle in the background, which could also be a nod to Dragon Quest. Also his original name was going to be "Oozey Oozebourne". But was due to obvious reasons. Also Back to Beppi, whose name could be inspired by Tito Beppi, a clown portrayed by Lon Chaney in the 1928 film Laugh, Clown, Laugh. Also the Background for the Beppi fight, is inspired by "Pleasure Island" from the 1940 Disney Classic "Pinocchio" Also King Dice's Expression when he's unleashing his cards, is also inspired by the "The Coachman" from Pinocchio. Those are all the ones I can think of at the moment. But pretty impressive if I do say so myself ;3
Wener wornan or how ever you sell his is name The boss is an obvious reference to tom and jerry
Werner Werman (pronouced in proper German as "Verner Verman") and I did mention the "Tom & Jerry" reference. If you took the time to read what I typed.
I'm sorry I skimmed through and looked for his name, must have missed it.
It's okay, I don't blame you. I did write **Alot** so all is forgiven.
Grim Matchstick is name parody of animator Grim Natwick. Dr. Kahl is a reference to Milt Kahl.
Goopy Le Grande also has a reference t othe NES game "A Boy And His Blob". When he transitions into his second phase, you can see him consuming a pellet, followed by a question mark, and then he transforms. This is also the way you get The Blob to transform in the NES game.
...
9:09 is it just me or did anyone thought that the cat looks like Tom from Tom and Jerry. I didn't watch the whole vid so I'm not sure if he mentioned this
I'm so happy that I'm not the only one who thought that😂
Every one
Same
How can I love and hate something so much at the same time ?
I'm sure someone's already mentioned it, but the Frog Brothers boss has MORE Street Fighter references than what you mentioned. Literally every attack they do is a reference to the more iconic characters. Not to mention, they're dressed like Ryu and Ken.
Yeah! They throw Hadokens, Yoga Fire balls, the Hundred Hand Slap, Sonic Booms, and do Zangief's Lariat.
You missed one! In Inkwell Isle 2 there is a face in the pond that tells you how many times you died, and that face is the same one that comes out of the barn in swing you sinners!
Ah yes, *C a r l a* Maria my favorite boss!
9:05 that’s supposed to represent dr.willy from megaman
No dr wily
Its not willy
Its pronounced (y ly)
Or (why lee)
@Jordyn Donahue no its not
Dr. Kahl is a reference to Dr. Wily and Dr. Robotnik, he even has "Chaos Emeralds".
I think he’s more like Dr neo cortex from crash bandicoot, but without the yellow skin and giant forehead.
Some random guy I thought I was the only one that saw him as a color swapped cortex...
Yeah, definitely Robotnik and Wily. The way doctor did his glare and then popped into the robot is Dr. Wilyish. His face is also a bit similar to Neo Cortex, but its possible that's a coincidence. Unrelated, but Crash Bandicoot also featured some gags found in older cartoons, at least in the PS1 games.
5haow5 Yeah I thought he was Dr Wily to start and at the end Dr Robotnik, I wouldn't have put it with Bowser, but he could be a lot of bosses put in one.
5haow5 nou
*The amount of references rivals Gumball's*
More gumball fans

9:57 is just creepy
Yep.

Yup the ad is scary
Nah
9:14 is creepy
hey you forgot a reference does dr kahls robot look like the iron giant?
He does, though the Tin Man and Bender also come to mind. Dr. Kahl himself looks like Dr. Wily from the Mega Man games or Dr. Eggman from the Sonic games, or even Neo Cortex from the Crash Bandicoot games.
emerick bender also the gem his robot holds is a reference to the chaos emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog.
+emerick bender If there's a sequel to the game, I want to see the robot eating metal before you start the battle.
Pruoxy21 not all references come from 1930s cartoons
What about Grim Matchstick and Megaman 2's Mecha-Dragon
In the King Dice fight when you fight the clawmachine there is a wolf and a lizard plushie in the toy bin, paired with the monkey you fight, this is a reference to the RAMPAGE game where you smash buildings.
This was great, thanks guys!
Am I hearing things or did his voice warp when he said "Devil" at 6:15
He's hiding something that is probably better not known than known
.....oh.......no........this.........is...............not...............good!
It’s you
OH NO
It’s called voice cracking
5:04 I think that cat looks like Tom off of Tom and Jerry, you know the cat and mouse idek
It's true, that is a reference
Just because it is a cat doesn’t mean it’s tom
of course it looks like it his fur is blue
@@shameemkawsar2162 well, Tom was named Jasper in the early years, and the cat is a direct copy of Jasper's look.
9:05 I thought the car was Dr Eggmans machine
I’m sure somebody else caught this... but the baby bird in “Aviary Action!” has Earthworm Jim’s blaster. Awesome game!
His name is willy warbles
Brandon:"...you're about to learn A LOT about the 1930's" Me:"I'M IN MY HISTORY CHAIR!"
I remember when I was little, my family owned this DVD full of short films from the 1950s. Years later I asked my mum if we still own the DVD and she said she doesn’t even remember owning. When the guy in the video mentioned “the cobweb hotel” I remember abut the DVD cause that was one of the short films
I've seen many of those old cartoons when I was younger...and I'm still a kid right now
I love all the references this game made, from old cartoons and games to real life moments!
And I thought Splatoon made a clever Calamari pun.....
The squid sisters (I forgot their names and haven’t play splattoon in a long time)
Testfniau 64 Callie and Marie
Callie and Marie take away the E in both names THERE SQUIDS *GET IT?* CALLIMARI?? THE SEAFOOD?!? *no?* "okay"
Cali Maria is more noticeable, took me a long time to realize Callie and Marie is a play on Calamari.
Da Dragon Durp I see you everywhere.....
Really? You forgot Tom and Jerry?
Kevin Ha shhh undertale fan
What does that matter?
yohl yo chill man.
Hamsterpowerftl it doesn't, but it's weird that they didn't mention it because it was both blatantly obvious and well known.
Kevin Ha ok
If these two made a cartoon, im absolutely positive it would be a hit
This aged well
learning all of this makes me glad my dad introduced me 2 very old cartoons bcuz most of them i knew almost all of them and they were all a blast 2 watch.
1:20 Wally Warbles' son could also be Woody Woodpecker reference.
I WATCHED WOODY SO MUCH WHEN I WAS A KID

xXSilentAgent47Xx ha ha ha ha ha Ha ha ha ha ha Hahahahahahaha
true
You forgot about Flight of the Valkyries in Wally Warbles' battle!
Ribby and Croak's stances have been confirmed - along with a bunch of their attacks also being street fighter references.
6:48 their canon names are Sal Spudder(the potato), Ollie Blub(the onion), and Chancey Chantenay(the carrot)
Baroness Von Bon Bon in Sugarland Shimmy may also be based on Marie Antoinne, who was decapitated, which is probably why her head comes off
Thanks for the video! I'm a big animation fan but I definitely have a dearth of knowledge of the 1930s in animation history. One thing that stuck out to me was that you used the poster for Disney's "Get A Horse" short when you mentioned the purposeful color mismatching. I understand the confusion, but, "Get A Horse" was a brand new short film that went in front of Frozen a few years ago. Thanks again for the video and I hope to see more Cuphead ones soon!
+Lauren Chaikin oh awesome, thanks for sharing and I hope youve subscribed so you can be notify on our next cuphead video
This was one of the coolest looking games, well ever. I died so many times but I think I kept playing bc I was mesmerized by how awesome the graphics looked and nothing close has ever existed before it lol gameplay was awesome & those bosses and difficulty made it so satisfying compared to the easy run and guns of today! Hopefully we get a sequel soon!
0:09 Hilda Berg: i'm going to do something called pro gamer move
Can you make 107 facts about Cuphead?
Already working on it 😉
yes this is good news keep it up
That last Lego one is so strange and obscure any other possible reference it could be?
He's a stretch 4 years later, "4561" When using EU standards is May 4, 1961. Which is when the "Freedom Riders" rode to Washington D.C trains, ride? Just as much of a stretch
The last phase of the Dr robot guy is a clear reference to sonic, A doctor with a moustache in a round flying Robot thing with Diamonds, Dr EGGMAN in the egg mobile with the chaos emeralds.
8:18 not only his appearance but his name as well (they all have official names) his name is Lord Gob Packer. (Packer being a reference to Pacman.)
You did miss one. The flames that jump at you when fighting the dragon look alot like the flame on the rope in the cartoon "Bimbo's initiation"
I thought the cat was Tom and jerryXD
So did i. GREAT profile PIC btw
I didn't forget him he was my favorite Micky mouse character
8:55 The robot the doctor is in is also referenced from the famous masterpiece "The Iron Giant" and the interesting space show "Futurama" You did miss something
The Dragon looks like a Megaman Boss
I beat that guy in about 7 seconds or more. Less than 20 seconds, that's for sure, including the chase. I got lucky with my buster, I guess.
Grim?
It is based off it
5:40 was that skeleton flipping the bird if you know what i mean?
The first phase of the Dr. Kahl fight feels like an iron giant reference or a Mega Man 3 reference to the Gamma fight. Also, I'd say the gems he pulls out later in the fight closely resemble Chaos Emeralds.
actually there are refrences to gravity falls ! u can find bill's statue when ur fighting da guy with the robot
It's actually meant to be a illuminati, as its a giant robot in the past.
ok,thx for the info !
There are stilll lots And lots OF more
What about Maria antoinette "off with their heads" which is why baroness von bon bon throws her head at you. She was also executed for eating a lot of candy or something like that
Can't tell if you're joking or just really stupid
It was cake
She actually threw her headass at cuphead
And then they lifted her disembodied head from the catch bucket and she "spoke" to the crowd!
LET THEM EAT CAKE
I think that skeleton conductor guy looks like Eustis from courage the cowardly dog
Tostarenian Pikmin definitely does. I knew I wasn’t crazy😂
For real
awesome, thanks :)
It seems you forgot the Tom and Jerry reference, the other megaman reference, the Iron Giant reference and the JoJo's Bizarre andventure reference. I guess you just missed them.
The picnic panic cartoon that the elder kettle is from is directly referenced in the root packs level name “botanic panic”
Yeah, I also noticed that.
I thought "Botanic Panic" was a reference to the term "Satanic Panic"
You missed the tiny mushroom enemies in the very first Run-n-gun stage that seem REMARKABLY like the Cappy enemy from Kirby.
Think they're also a reference to the little hard hat robots from Mega Man in the way that they're invincible unless they're firing at you.
I knew one ... It was when u don’t hurt the onion and then the radish comes in the carrot level.
What about the dance King Dice's hands do at the beginning of the cards phase! They do a dance like Cab Calloway used to do on stage alot!
Dr. khal is a reference to professor poopy pants from captain under pants
1:19 this is just angry kazooie ! XD
Grim Matchstick sounds like the name of the person that animated Betty Boop, Grim Natwick. Just found that out, I thought it was cool!
That was in the video..? Or are you commenting after hearing that for some reason?
It wasn’t in the video lol. I just happened to be researching Betty Boop and came across that name.
The8BitGrandpaShow yes it was
Thanks for quoting the video
It was in the video
There's a ship in Perilous Piers that is named "The Lillian" Probably a reference to Walt Disney's wife, Lillian.
It's actually a reference to Lillian Friedman Astor. She was the first American female studio animator, and worked at Fleicher Studios
5:31 you missed the building that is called “acme shipping”
I love this!
Great Job!
Bon bon refrences a historical person. I forgot the name but it's refrencing the queen who let's them eat cake. Reason why she can throw her head And the new patch note *touch fuzzy. Get dizzy* Refrences a level from Yoshis Island. Cagney's lint attacks make your screen disorted if touched Like the enemy from yoshis island that does the exact same thing
Apples and Cream Also Cagney's final form references Super Saiyan, with longer spiky hair and altered eye color.
I remember playing yoshi’s island and touching all the fuzzy enemies i can to see how tripy it could get it was the level *TOUCH FUZZY GET DIZZY* #yoshiisondrugs
baroness von bon bon is a refrence to the candy witch in hanzel and gretle
Apples and Cream milk
Apples and Cream ur so smarter forgot about yoshi one
I thought rumor honey bottoms was the Honey Nut Cheerios mascot

Lol
Lmao
I can hear Extravaganza in the background in the beginning!!! Nice touch!
I could swear that those little flyers that emerge from Dr. Kahl's Robot's abdomen are a reference to Starcraft's Protoss Carrier.
I thought it was Galaga
Did mugman just drinked himself
He does it every start of the battles

Dr. Khal's scene riding the robot head is a reference to Dr. Eggman from sonic since he always ride like that
6:41 mug man what are you doing!?!?!
he s u c c
he's drinking himself, which i think is considered self-cannibalism.
Music Made by a Pianist. Me: GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE!
animaniacs reference
Very cool
I like how they included old references to the game
The two fighting frogs look like toad&frog from a book
Awww I used to love reading those books :3
Apparently there are certain things that you can do in certain fights to make something else disappear. 1.if you leave the onion in the botanic panic level after about 5 seconds he smiles and just goes back in the ground and then a radish come out of where the onion went and it just keeps spinning at the bottom of the screen until you deal damage to it. 2. In djimmi the great fight after you finish his sarcophagus stage he starts scanning you. If you press the dash button and turn into a small plane then it skips to his last phase and a little puppet appear in between the pyramids. 3. I don't know how exactly to trigger this but I'm pretty sure if you just on the two of the cupid cutouts on either side of the screen by Sally's heart parry, you're able to drop something on her husband and it kills him. And then the fight totally changes and then you have to fight at an orphanage or something.
Me reading a book (Wolf, or whatever that is): 3:36 The monster under my bed (Dragon): 0:25 Me after seeing the monster (ded bird): 2:14
Its a coyote i think
One reference you missed was how Beppi the Clown may (or may not :P) be a reference of Koko the Clown, another character of Fleischer's who was used for his rotoscope.
