Easily one of the best of all time.
Saw her playing at a European junior tournament in Chur (Switzerland) in 1990 or 1991. She was 11 years old at most. Her two significantly older, taller, physically stronger opponents on that Saturday may have managed to score a game or so. If I had to describe how she played, my attempt would fail before I even said one word. There are certain things in life one cannot describe.

@@anthonydecastro6938 well yeah but she still won enough tournaments to retain the number 1 ranking for a while. this tournament really solidified her decline. she played well against Venus in the next round and was the heavy favorite to win against Jennifer but she had other plans. After this, the big babes( Jennifer, Venus, Serena, Lindsay) we're beating her pretty regularly. Everyone in the comments was praising Martina but this was really Serena's match to lose - She lost a lot of matches that she should have won in 2001 and trained hard in the off season to start winning again.
But temember that Serena W was far from the form of her dominant self. She was making lots of unforced errors. The serve was not as good yet. Hingis had the game but just not enough power to deal with the bigger stronger rivals that came after her.

I miss this era... So many talented dominating players... Personalities you want to root for.
True. The 00s are the best era for women tennis. Williams Sisters, Hingis, Henin, Davenport, Capriati, Clijsters, Sharapova, Mauresmo. So many multiple grand slam champions. And so many top players with different playing styles. These days everything is about power. Which is still ok if they can reduce the unforced errors. But when all players go for broke too many times it creates too many unforced errors, and creates inconsistencies. Not many players can play the power game the way that williams sisters and sharapova does. I think the younger generations player needs to hold back some of their shots and not go for broke all the time.

My god there were so many excellent and competitive players back in the 00's, the Williams Sisters, Capriati, Davenport, The Belgian Duo (Henin n Clijsters), Mauresmo, Hingis, Pierce, Vaidisova, Ivanovic, Jankovic, the Russian Golden Girls (Myskina, Dementieva, Sharapova, Kournikova, Petrova, Kuznetsova, Chakvetadze, Safina, Zvonareva) some honourable mention like Hantuchova, Golovin, Bartoli, Schiavone, Li Na, Zheng Jie, Azarenka, Radwanska... And now? Pfft! One tournament winning then gone!

all those players were very talented. What a pitty that anna kournikova had to retired at 21 years only because of back injuries. She was anyway the champion junior player in her time. To young. I miss all those players and tennis is no more the same without them. I miss capriati, kournikova and Dementieva

What endurance and skill Martina showed. Loved how she could change direction of a backhand line shot suddenly like Chris Evert. Serena was still escalating her game and muscle.
Enjoyed Hingis' game very much. A breath of fresh air in a pool of power hitters at the time.
There were no power hitters back then when she was winning matches. She could never compete in today’s game
@@Jane-vw5om Good joke. For almost 10 years now the WTA has been awful. Filled with low quality Tennis players. Hingis would have easily been the best. Even current Serena is nothing special and she dominates just by risky power hitting with no real thought behind it.
@@Jane-vw5om there were quite a few good power hitters during the 96-2000 Hingis' era, there was Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati and the Williams Sisters. Steffi Graf was also still a force to contend with in 96-99.

She was the female Federer (they're also a similar age and of course both Swiss). Such a smart player who mixed it up and didn't just rely on baseline hitting. Shame she couldn't continue a bit longer at the top in singles, but did well in doubles unsurprisingly. Ash Barty reminds me a bit of her.

When Martina was in top form she would literally not miss the ball!! That was the difference and playing super smartly 🎉
Hingis strength was court positioning and ball movement and putting her opponents in awkward positions on the court because they never knew if the ball was gonna land in or out.

Mine too. It was her intelligence on the court and the range of shots she had. It was difficult to see when she faced Davenport who was so powerful and Hingis just didn't get a chace, especially on her own serve.

But my latest phenomenal rising star Idle of a new age is ASHLEY BARTY, in many respects Hingis an Barty are very much alike in game play an dogid in determination aswell as headstrong in strategy of their game.. Personally I'd very very very much like to see a full on Hingis v Barty match it would be quite interesting to say the least with them being very similar in many ways!! It’s really amazing to see how cautious top players were when playing with Martina Hingis even if she had no real offensive weapons, only strategy and smart play.
they were but this match is a bad example. serena was never cautious against her. except for this match. i don’t even know what serena’s game plan was.
Anthony Mauro I guess she never was cautious with any player, she’ll just hit the ball as hard as she can left, right or center. That was until her sudden brilliance in early 2002 when she started showing signs of being one of the greatest female champion in tennis history. While Martina Hingis on the other hand, found her rightful place as one of the best doubles player in tennis.
Her two handed backhand was a weapon.
no offensive weapons....very funny. Ask Serena about Hingis's forehand or backhand. Maybe the serve wasn't overpowering, but if Hingis was lacking offensive power I can't think of many contemporaries with better offensive games.
ron macdonald seriously! just because she doesn’t hit every shot flat or as hard as she can doesn’t mean she wasn’t offensive. she was in control of many many points. she used things other than her power to dominate her opponents. and this is coming from a huge williams fan.
Hingis’s change of angles with last minute flick of the wrists keep her opponents guessing. It’s difficult to read if she is going down the line or crosscourt and there are no patterns to her stroke play. That’s why a bigger hitter like Serena has problems teeing on shots that land in the service box. Very smart player Martina. Really needed a good service though. She never worked on it.

Martina had everything except power. Had she had more power there is no doubt she would have won many more slams. The 2002 AO final is so heartbreaking. I haven’t been able to watch it since.

I keep confusing 2001 and 2002. I thought it was 2001 where she had all those match points but got nervous and each of them played Conservative hoping JC would miss. JC was more in control in 2002

@@damagedradio The ball was in, but Martina totally lost her focus. I am a huge fan of hers, always had been. But at the time she was up a break in the set, and winning that current service game. I've never worked out exactly why she lost it so intensely over one bad call. The French crowd were awful though. She'd beaten home favourite Mary Pierce on the way too, and that may have been an additional factor. Obviously, the French was the only grand slam she was missing and she may have wanted it too much.
Hingis has one of the best brains out there. Almost too much chaos theory inevitably. She shone so bright for a while her legacy lives on. She could find an angle or a shot that not Many other players could do. She took out both Serena and Venus in consecutive matches in this tournament. That is a testament to how she plays. No disrespect to either of he aforementioned there is not a comparison being made but I just find watching martina play akin to watching a great instrumentalist pick up their instrument
Smartest, based on what, I feel like that is an excuse that people use for female tennis players who are unwilling to put in the work at the gym.

after all these years, I still think that, because of its intensity and quality, the rally starting at 21:51 is the best one of the last 20 years (and this match might be overall in the top 5, if not top 3 of the last 20 years).

Martina's serve was the biggest issue in her game, because she had everything else she was quick she was smart and once she got a rally going she usually got the upper hand. but shoulder problems and i think going pro so young just took the longevity out of her career .
You recognize the correlation between youth, injuries and going on tour. This is why Mr. Williams limited his girls junior touring schedule. He was called all kinds of disrespectful name for this by the USTA people and media people. In hindsight, he looks like a genius for his vision and guidance for the Williams sisters. And, as he foretold, they had long successful tennis careers. They have been conscious international embassadors of tennis and inspired millions to play. Currently, Serena is two major wins away from being the number 1 all time major tournament winner in tennis. Venus has been magnificent and has significant multitudes of tournament wins. When Venus casted a shadow over her sister in the early days, Mr. Williams said the younger Serena would be better in the future. Now, we see what he talked about decades ago.

The fluidity of Hingis's game combined with an ultra-competitiveness clearly separated her in terms of appeal from the other female players of that era. Unfortunately she was literally run out of the very top tier of singles by the Williams' and other power players. They kept the smaller Hingis constantly sprinting all over the court, resulting in chronic lower body injuries and ultimately retirement.
Errr I disagree. Its rumoured she became a bit of a coke head..She always deniged it though..Anyways I think that was why she walked away from it..But yeah she was a joy to watch.. My favourite female player, her and Graff...And of course the William's sisters
@@markmorris7123 "Rumored" being the key point here. In reality, Hingis' game didn't match up to power players when they were hitting more winners than unforced. Hingis had a lot of variety, but none of that mattered when you can't get to the ball or forced onto your back foot.

During this time Hingis was the top player and everybody thought she was the next Steffi Graf. Nobody thought that Serena will actually be the one beating Graf records as she was still developing her game at that time.

Our track and field team were all Canadian black for the sprints, Africans for the long distance, and field spots were the whites sprinkled with some Asians. Quite a few of my classmates from 11 years old onwards naturally had a 6 pack abs. Genetics - all the strong, well built Africans in the 20th century were sold as slaves - those genes have been passed on

One of my favorite all time matches. The Australian Open might be the most neutral surface for both Hingis and Serena. Hingis truly won this match. Serena did not lose this match, Hingis had to win it.

LadyMaryNW45 Yeah, most players even hard hitters were very cautious when dealing with Martina Hingis. She was striking the ball early on the rise, top spin shots and those skillful half volleys were her weapons to compensate for the lack of power.

One of tennis greatest rivalries
This was a great match. Granted this was early in Serena’s career, but she always struggled against good returners of serve. Without that weapon to fall back on, she struggled right through her career. But love that drop volley to save match point. She was so good at the net when she was younger. The last decade in her career, she couldn’t volley to save her life. Hingis is just one of the smartest players to ever play in the women’s side.
