My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We saw over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

  • My father worked on small engine repair the last 40 years of his life. He repaired a Mantis Tiller and gave it to my brother. One tank full of paint thinner and it was done. I grew up in Grove, Ok and now live in Tulsa. We raised 5 buildings of chickens at a time. There was 8,000 in each building. From new chicks to laying eggs and off to laying houses. As a teenager I worked all over NE Oklahoma and Arkansas on chicken catching crews. Good luck with the Chicks, since you are the Chickanic you should do good. At that size they will eat 24/7 and grow fast. Believe it or not back in the early 70's we would open the ends of the building and let the chickens out. Main predators during day was crows. At night they all went back in building, so we closed doors.

  • Lady, I have a Tru-Fuel tale to tell that will blow your mind. I have worked on small engines of various types for over 30-years and have never seen this done. There is a man in my neighborhood who owns 1/2 acre of land with a house. He bought an $8,000 zero-turn 60" mower to cut the grass. One day he was mowing the yard and ran out of gas. Instead of going down to local gas station to buy more gas, he takes two unopened cans of Tru-Fuel and pours it in the gas tank of the mower so he could finish mowing. Well it wouldn't run. So he came to me to get me to come and look over the mower to see what was wrong. He did not tell me that he had put Tru-Fuel in the mower. The mower wouldn't start. So I checked for spark. Good spark. I checked to see if the fuel line was blocked. Fuel flows freely. While checking the fuel line, I noticed the fuel was "pink" in color. I asked him about it. That's when I found out he had put two cans of Tru-Fuel in the mower so he could finish mowing the grass. That's when I told him that the mower's carb and engine was not designed to run on Tru-Fuel. It took me almost four (4), hours to get that mower to crank and run. And yes, I charged him a pretty penny for it. This is one of those people who "lives by" Tru-Fuel. He buys 4 and 5 cases of Tru-Fuel at a time just for his weed trimmer and leaf blower. Stihl weed trimmer and Echo leaf blower. To him, Tru-Fuel is the best thing ever made for small engines. You should do a video on this to show people why Tru-Fuel won't run in a 4-cycle motor.

It doesn't seem to be a problem after they are a week or 2 old. Make sure you have a large enough coop and run area and MAKE SURE it is predator proof. NO chicken wire, cover all openings with half inch hardware cloth poultry/fence stapled down or held down with battens screwed to the framing.

  • Your chicks are adorable! We finally got four girls after talking about it for years. Ours are a little over a year old and they look for us to come play with them every day. If you socialize with them, they will come running when they see you, especially if you bring them goodies everyday. Ours love Cheerios and crushed corn chips! You will love them! Not sure how you're going to keep them, but they do need a lot of room. Those coops they sell ain't gonna cut it. I hope you'll keep us posted on them.

  • I have a mantis that I found up under an old house that our church bought. The house was behind our church and the old gentleman that lived there ran a small nursery operation in the back of the property. It had been under the house so long that the tines had rotted completely off the thing. I replaced the tines and rebuilt the carb. Been using it for about ten years. I think it’s pretty close to forty years old and runs great. They do last forever!!!

  • One can compare the Mantis engines with the Swedish Volomotors B-18 and B-20. They were made to run like perpetual motion machines. // Jerry from Sweden. The hoodie you are wearing with the Husqvara logo has an Island around it. It belongs to our coat of arms in Örebro.

  • My chance I took that same carb apart a week ago in a fix and flip Mantis. The needle seat on the metering side was cattywampus. It was a pressed in seat, weird as heck. But it explained the story, repaired in an independent shop 5 years ago, came home and never ran. I ordered a carb, HIPA, $10 to my door and gave it to my apprentice as a teaching lesson.

  • Where do I begin? I never thought to stretch those fuel lines. I've rebuilt alot of carbs from 2cyle to 4bbl. I always use carb cleaner and compressed air. Your enthusiasm over getting an engine to run is contagious.I can recall not giving up until the engine fired! Having chickens and fresh eggs is very sustainable. Once the chicks mature, feed them anything. Twice a year we had lobster and gave the chickens the shells. The next day the egg yolks were dark orange! In my opinion your videos are so detailed and informative that anyone could watch them and try their hand at repairs. Even those who can't, it's great to see what was done to repair their equipment and that's invaluable. I learned most of what I know from watching and helping Technicians from Auto Mechanics to the Glamour Trades! You may just inspire kids to enter the trades. There's a deficit of Trades persons. Talking up Mfgrs and cautioning consumers against problematic new equipment is extraordinary! I love that they listen to you. Finally we have a voice! Thank you, Bre! Your efforts go far beyond what you may realize!

  • Here's a trick I use when replacing the primer bulb. Mash the bulb in and ease up. Most of the time this will get the gas to start flowing into the primer bulb. If you push down on the bulb too fast or you keep pumping it, all you're doing is pushing the gas back into the tank. Pushing down and then slowly raising the bulb while your thumb is still on it will allow the line to fill with gas.
