Today we're reviewing the AVerMedia PW513 Live Streamer Webcam... again. After my initial review went live, there was a large number of reviews being posted to Best Buy and Reddit complaining about the camera and calling KZheadrs liars, so I bought a retail sample for myself and re-tested. Here are my conclusions.

  • I set up my 513 as an overhead camera for a stream. Updated the firmware, didn't use camengine though. Just had it in OBS. Put it in 4k mode so i could punch/crop in for what I was doing. No freezes, worked great the whole time. The included USB C cable didn't like my 16ft active USB 3.0 extension though, I had to use a 10gbps compatible USB C 3.1 cable instead (which I mainly use with my Oculus Quest) and then it worked great. Learning how to tune this camera properly really does go a long way in making people happier with it.

I'm not a game streamer, but I need to find a good webcam for shows I stream weekly on Zoom and for self-tape recording I do. Would you recommend this for my needs? If not, is there something else you'd recommend. Appreciate the time and care you put into your impressions!

  • 3 monitors and using two side ones to light you works fairly well or just have a chrome/youtube page open, good balanced light. if you are 1/4 size screen not fullscreen can get away with alot more noise and hide it. (like shooting 4k to stream at 1080p) Awesome video thanks for stating this!

  • At first, thanks for the video and your opinion. What I really like about you is that you are just real. Real in a sense that you are still making videos while moving, not delivering the quality we are used to, having toys in the background etc. Other KZheadr would clean up their rooms, try to make it look good and focus on setting up all the video gear first. You don't and I really like it, to be honest. You are just a normal guy that makes great content I really enjoy watching and listening to. Keep up the good work and good luck to you and your family moving. Stay safe.

  • Thanks, brother. This was extremely helpful. I actually did buy the camera after watching your first review. Being relatively new to streaming I also struggled a bit at the fine tuning, although I fiddled till I made it work, but this really clarified how to use the settings to maximize results. As I'm using it for some longer distance shots with in person interviews, it is incomparably better with the right lighting compared to the C920.

      @honestnerd@honestnerd3 жыл бұрын
    • @@honestnerd it’s still a resounding ehh... It could be that being on a Mac, I have significantly less control over the quality. The biggest issue I have is keying my green screen, there’s so much fuzziness with the 513 that is not there in the 313, even with good lighting (which is the only thing Avermedia told me to fix in their correspondence with me).

  • Maybe it was expectations for that price? Like you said, physical lighting and set design goes a long way but then you have to get into the fine detail of the camera to get it to look good. For $250 I’m betting a lot of people wanted it to look like an iPhone video, and you’re right, it’s a webcam - it’s really not meant for that. But I do think price per performance, the C920 is a better deal. If people want a really nice picture that’s easish… maybe a cam link and a gopro? But even that requires some setting up on the gopro side to get a good low light picture.

  • With rejecting the Logitech Brio and reverting to the C920, which gave me the better image overall (and yes, I know how to set them up) as sharpness doesn’t make up for all the other shortcomings of the Brio, I pretty much have given up on Webcams. With two Elgato Key Light in place and a looooot of placement and Setting testing, it’s clear to me, that what I am looking for requires a bigger camera sensor and lens.

  • A big problem ( perhaps biggest problem ) with consumer reviews on Amazon, Best Buy, and other retail sites is the Dunning-Kruger effect. Not only are many consumers ignorant about a product, they don't know they are ignorant. I think a lot of people don't understand what goes into making what they think are "simple" videos on KZhead and Twitch. They think they can do the same thing with their phones or integrated laptop webcams. But when their efforts don't look near as good, they figure it must be the hardware's fault. The segment here from @10:15 to 14:00 is a great example of what isn't immediately obvious to people who don't know much about cameras or photography. Videos and photos are captured using a lot more light than their end-products suggest. And if you don't know exactly how much light to use, where to place the light sources, how to bounce and diffuse it, and how to control your shutter/exposure, you'll still get get crappy results.

  • I just was frustrated that the software and camera didn't plug n play & needing the Avermedia software in order for it to work would have been fine if it wasn't for how buggy the software is which in all made it more than a hassle to deal with. Now, I did find out many tests to find out the root of the issues I and many other users had with this camera, and from what I found was that this camera requires alot of bandwidth from the USB 3.0 port. If you use just enough amount of other USB devices, as I have plugged in my computer, this camera would freeze, software crashes, etc. Could have been from the AMD USB issues too but I returned this camera even tho I really really didn't want too.

I tried a cheap $25 USB 3.0 switcher, and a beefier $60 switcher recommended by B&H Photo. I ended up just buying a cheaper second webcam for work. Avermedia did tell me that they didn’t recommend using a usb switcher with the webcam.

  • I too honestly had this quality out of the Avermedia 513 that I thought I'd give a shot. Originally got the Razer Kiyo Pro, looked pretty good, even with my single strip lighting and LED bulbs in my overhead lighting, but wanted to make sure it was completely up to date with it's firmware update. After that it looked like pure grainy garbage. Moved on to the 513 as a replacement option, and off the bat it was already rather grainy. Thought, ok the update surely will fix this right? Made it worse. Ended up sticking with my old Avermedia 313 that was only 80 bucks, which even in my previously mentioned lighting looks superior. EDIT: I got both of these holiday season of 2023 when they were on sale, so even 2 years prior to this ppl are still having issue.

I already use two GH5 cameras when I am home doing live streams but using an iphone for a third cam and a laptop/pc input to the 4th ATEM hdmi input. I want something a little more portable for use in the field office that is better quality than the laptop built in webcam without the need of hauling around fully caged/rigged out GH5 cameras. If it would also work with the usb-c to hdmi converter then It would just be even more valuable/flexible to my kit. Being a usb webcam I would guess the usb to hdmi conversion would not work.

  • I've had this camera since it first was released, and it still continues to be a pretty terrible performer compared to even $100 webcams. Under the best lighting conditions (huge light panels) it still appears to have a lot of mush and grain. Even in your review video here while filming if you just watch a flat color surface you can see the grain bleeding through and smooth filters trying to compensate for it (poorly). The truth is though a $250 webcam should not fall apart the moment the lighting changes, and it shouldn't require such critical fine tuning just to make the image 'passable'.

  • Actually a lot of these comments are fact, I purchased the pw513 myself after watching a few KZheadrs and it looked amazing once I received it there was nothing I could do to make it look anything better than hot garbage. I've been live streaming for a few years now and no most of the advanced tips and tricks for cameras, don't need anything better than a c920 didn't feel like upgrading to a full DSLR and the aver media seemed like the way to go but I ended up returning it

  • As a non streamer who bought this camera for meetings at home I find it very strange the amount of effort required on the buyers part based on your "Reasons for Disappointment" 1. Poor lighting: I dont have lighting other than natural or ceiling lights/lamps, lighting was fine for my C920 before it broke. 2. Bad settings in software: Big issue that Avermedia need to address, the average user is not expecting to have to mess with exposure/gain settings to fix the terrible grainy-ness. 3. Using 1080p60: I cant even find that option in the Avermedia software. I do not see the option to change resolution to anything so am using whatever my meeting software uses. 4 Wong expectation: I am guessing most buyers came from a C920 or similar same as I did and there was nothing like the grain the PW513 has in "NORMAL" use lighting conditions. See point 1 response

  • I got the 513 a few days ago... grainy. It's grainy on OBS and grainy on CamEngine. Nothing I do and no amount of playing with settings does anything to get rid of the grainy noise. My only hypothesis is that it's a hardware issue, either with the 513cam (most likely) or with my PC (I'm on a laptop with a decent graphics card). I'm providing screenshots (imgur link below) because there is such a chasm, just worlds apart, in the image quality portrayed in reviews versus my results that you truly have to see it to believe it. I'm not trolling and I'm not trashing the 513, I just want this cam to work and look even close to what I see in the reviews. $40 720p knockoff gopro vs $250 4K AVerMedia 513- imgur.com/gallery/585ci0U

    • my prayers were answered. Out of the box it was awful, the 4k looked like 720p for some reason, but after I flicked some of the settings on and off it recalibrated and became super crisp, but super grainy. So what I did was grab another lamp, turn the noise reduction to low, turned the brightness down to a much lower setting, and boom, crispy and noise free. It looks very similar to my c920, but on steroids - you can see the pores of your skin and all. The greenscreen is so much better on this cam than on my c920. Highly recommend, as long as you know how to troubleshoot.

After upgrading my PC, lighting and using similar settings talked about here, the outcome was still the same...horrible! The noise is so bad. • Says that it's better than the C920, immediately cuts to side by side showing the C920 looking better. I think this is the reason most ppl prefer the C920, it's fine to say that the PW513 is only inferior in auto mode and if you tweak the settings you can get better results etc, but 99% of buyers don't care about that they just want the superior auto result.

  • There is ONE issue you missed... and it was the primary one that's mentioned and hated, as well as acknowledged but NOT stated as fixed by AverMedia. In "low-light" settings, for example, a standard home that doesn't have any fancy lighting, the image is VERY "GRAINY".... For example, this reviewer shows it in his video, you can see it some.... As well, the "color accuracy" seems better when you had the C920 and the 513 side by side. You're more "RED"... This is also shown in this guys video... kzhead.info/sun/gq2vm5aMh4dvpKs/bejne.html

Right now it seems that in first promo videos all the "hype" youtubers only brought out the "perfect condition" scenario, however just forgot to mention, that in regular room light (that 99% of people have), the image quality is just awful.

    • @@karlj591 ... BTW, I got the Avermedia PW513 and it was just terrible... I returned it and got the "Razer Kiyo Pro" and it's absolutely WONDERFUL... Not perfect, but no special lighting is really required, works in most lighting condition out of the box, etc. See the reviews on it... The only thing that "can" be better is the Brio, but it requires generally more of a pro setup to work ideal. So, depends on ones needs which to get. None of the other cameras are as good. It's now those two... The Avermedia failed... Colors poor even with adjustment, and clarity not as good as those two.

If you wanna go all studio lights and be able to afford it, you'd be able to get a darn DSLR/Mirrorless. It's appalling how many "influers" call this the best "4k Webcam/plug and play". Waiting for my Logitech Brio because I don't want so much blaring light just to compensate the grainy image and strain my eyes for hours while streaming on this crap.
