Hyenas have always been known as the opportunists of the wild, as they take any chance they can get to steal another predator’s food. But, they take any opportunity they can, to go in for the kill themselves.
BOOK YOUR TRIP TO KRUGER: bit.ly/BookatKruger
This incredible video of an injured rhino being attacked by hyenas was taken by Danie Bester (31), a sales representative in the Kruger National Park. He caught up with LatestSightings.com and explained the events of his experience:

“On the morning of the 23rd of October, I decided to go out for an early morning drive. It was a very quiet morning on my way to Malelane heading out after just spending the night at Pretoriuskop camp. On my way, I passed a waterhole where there were 3 Rhinos and a clan of Hyenas. Upon first glance, I did not make much if this sighting but I stopped to have a look anyway. I noticed that the hyenas kept biting at a Rhino’s backside and started wondering why? While the Rhino was moving around trying to get the hyenas away I saw that the Rhino was slightly injured and concluded that that’s why the hyenas were taking their chances.”
“I started filming just after one of the Hyenas ripped of the Rhinos tail and then they started biting it non-stop. They kept going after the wound and biting the Rhino, pulling at the open flesh. The other 2 Rhinos did not help too much, the did not give chase to the hyenas but rather tried keeping behind the injured Rhino as to protect his open wound. The Hyenas were relentless and did not leave the poor rhino alone even for a minute. The biting went on for about 7 minutes, but it felt like much longer. The Rhino took a rising opportunity and started running, Hyenas following close behind they were heading in the direction of the riverbed. I saw them all reach the riverbed and then disappear into the thickets where after I could not relocate them again.”
“This was definitely a once in a lifetime sighting! I am not sure how the scenario ended but I really hope the Rhino got away and lived to see another day, tailless and all… I was surprised at the courage the Hyenas had for taking on the second-biggest member of the big 5 and seemingly succeeding. After a few minutes of watching and filming, I really felt sorry for the Rhino as it seemed helpless, even for its size - but this is nature in its rawest form.”
“I am fortunate enough to spend several weeks in the Kruger and in Pilanesberg a year and even in all the times visiting the Parks, have I ever experienced such a sighting. This was incredible, mesmerizing and just reminds us of how cruel survival can become in the wild. Even though this might be heartbreaking to watch, this is nature.”
Louis, general manager and Jock Safari Lodge, received this sighting from Mayneth. Mayneth is a Jock Safari guide who was also at the sighting.
Louis reported this to the SANParks section ranger. Later, the Kruger Vets went and darted the rhino to see what was happening. It seemed as though the leg was broken from a possible fight with another bull rhino. The decision was made to euthanize the rhino as nothing further could be done.

We were the first ones at the scene back in October and our guide Nick said he'd never seen anything like this. @Clarence Kayser read the description box. The rhino was euthanized
I wonder what they do with the body when it’s euthanized? Surely they can’t leave it out there because fatal drugs are in it and animals eating the body could get it in their system.
I knew that hyenas are great hunters but I never thought they would ever attack a full grown rhino. They are smart predators and most likely knew that something is wrong with that rhino so it won't fight back for some reason.

@@villainuday5365 yes it was adult rhino leg is broken that is why hyenas are attacking it..
Use your brain man. It is injured.
That horn when used can rip apart those hyenas easily.
Also the brain when used can be pretty useful... something that rhinos don't know yet!
Except they’re good at staying out of the way. They attack from behind. When the rhino turns around, another attacks from the other side. The rhino has to constant spin to protect itself while the hyenas just wait for the rhino to turn back around. It’s too big to turn around quickly to get a hyena, and it’s injured , so it’s movements are very strained. It really has no defense other than it’s friends.
Too slow to rip those hyenas, heavy vs light
Have never seen nor even heard of something like this happening before!

They should've left the rhino alone. Hyenas have to eat too. The rhino wasn't going to leave with it's tail pulled off. It was going to die from infection any way
Sad. But, once hurt or old, the circle of life can be damn hard.
Why the hell the 2 others rhinos don't react? Rhinos are known to be aggressive, so can they stay calm and inactive while one of them is attacked and eaten alive?
*I never seen any animal(s) attack a rhino so relentlessly.*
If rhino is a specie on red list, he need protection against all kind of predators, not only against human.
To be fair, these are white rhinos, the most common and least endangered species. Now, if these were the critically endangered black rhinos, then they could use extra protection.
@@cintronproductions9430 your right, the white population is arround 20 000 spécimen, the Southern subspecie have the bigger population. However, the conservation statut for the white rhino is: Near-threatened species. onceuponthecross1 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
The area the hyenas are attacking is very specific. It’s an area near the groin without much thick skin and an artery running through it, which means they can kill a rhino by puncturing that artery
Seems like the rhino finally decided the arse chewing was worse than the leg pain and decided to make a run for it.
3:40 the rhino was euthanized due to its injury... Oh you mean it was killed for its horn?!

This is exactly what is expected from an unplanned, unintentional, unintelligent, unguided, imperfect, and amoral evolutionary process. This is exactly what is *NOT* expected from a perfect, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and moral creator with intentions and an intelligent plan.
An amoral evolutionary process that you're making moral judgments about as if your moral standards are objective and outside the evolutionary process.
You actually believe this entire universe created itself? You believe this entire universe sprang into existence out of nothing? Think about that. That is absurd to believe any of that. You believe in fairy tales and absurdity. Open your eyes. Everything cannot come from nothing. It’s impossible. It takes more faith to believe the universe sprang into existence by itself out of nothing than to believe the God of the Bible created it. The only logical belief is an uncaused cause created everything. God resides in eternity outside of time, he created the universe and everything in it. Our finite minds cannot fully comprehend the infinite God. Read the Gospel of John. Life is short, prepare to meet your Maker! Romans 10:9-13.
Thank God , the rangers saved it from a painful death 🙏
What a prehistoric sight, amazing
Recent, they didn't have camera phones in prehistoric times
Hyenas true to form spotted the limping rhino. They always go for tail & rump because with huge herbivores that is the most vulnerable target & softest area. That’s how they attack injured elephants & hippos. Amazing footage.
Hyna to rhino : bring your ass here😂😂
With the tail gone, that rhino had a big red Target on his rump:(
This is that kind of video where people debate whether humans should intervene and help the rhino, or let nature take its course. And I always find myself on the side of nature. Do not intervene humans!!!! Hyenas, vultures, other predators, they all serve the purpose of ridding injured, hurt or diseased animals from existence. By trying to help this rhino, you're disrupting the balance of nature. Depriving the Hyenas with the right they've earned to feed on this injured rhino. That is the purpose for there existence. Then the vultures come in and clean up what remains. We're there to observe, not interrupt. This is the natural order in their world. Respect it.
@Talos 620 the balance of nature is already completely destroyed by humans on this planet, it's only a matter of time before everything will go to hell. So disrupting it a bit more by euthanising a dying rhino isn't that big of a deal when there are obviously bigger problems around. We might as well do it and spare the rhino a lot of pain. Also the human mercy is actually welcomed by a lot of animals who are intellingent enough to understand, otherwise humans would never intervene when there is an animal like a cat or dog seeking for our help specifically (they know we are able to heal them if they are sick), and a lot of animals would die for nothing as a result.

@@hyenaboy7504 It was old and injured, so it could not survive . It was at the end of it's life as far as the wild is concerned. It was put down, and I imagine the carcass was left to sustain other animals. This way, the meat still sustains, but doesn't have to suffer any more
