Everything You Need to Know About the It Bag | Vogue
You're either "It" or you're not. The "status" bag has long been in existence, from the Hermes Kelly to the quilted Chanel handbag and Gucci's famous bamboo-handled number. The 90's saw a revival of the "It" bag, and Vogue's International Editor-At-Large, Hamish Bowles, tells us everything we need to know about these iconic bags.

That quilted chanel bag has to be one of the most duplicated bags of the world
Rajashri Pegu I have one that I got when I was in Paris a few years ago and it’s literally the love of my whole freaking life
Čš@@luanaalmeida6852 .Y.] ÷÷. ÷} | ~¡db. Xy🐎💋🦁🐎🐎:
Luana Almeida i can imagine ahhhh
that or the celine
@@kaylabey I think LV neverful MM is the one 😂
The Lady Dior bag is so gorgeous. It’s definitely still relevant.
Yes but not overexposed shhhhhhh lol
Guess I must be the only one who's always found that bag to be quite derivative and dull.
@@annonnie Its fashion so you are entitled to your own taste. In person I think craftsmanship is stunning. The Saddle has always been my Dior favorite though.
In hindsight it doesn’t have that wow factor, but in the mid 90’s it did. After a decade (80’s) of “LeSac”, “Espirit” and oversized shoulder bags, the sleek, elegant details of it were really fantastic. Bags like that, for their time, make you fall in love with fashion all over again. That being said, personally some of the others weren’t my fave, and I just never got the appeal of the Fendi. But that’s me.
@@beatnikrn2945 True about Lesac and Espirit making a come back style wise though I've never liked them very "lazy fashion" just my opinion Fendi on the other hand is a glorious fashion house IMO.
I'm so surprised THE most famous bag of all IKEA blue bag was not on the list. TSK...outrageous!
Lol. It isn't an IT bag.
Hahahha 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂amaaaazing
JustGettinReady iKea? That's hilarious 😂
stop it local
I’m surprised they didn’t bring up the told-to-death Jane birkin and Hermes story.
I was prepared for that
Giovana Laurence I was pleasently surprised.
stanleycoleman it’s usually told incorrectly as well! They make it seem as tho it was designed just for her when it was clearly a smaller version of the HAC...
Kourtney Nicole oh wow. Yes! Thank you! Most videos on youtube always do tell it incorrectly!! They always say it was a replacement for Jane Birkin’s basket bag when it was in fact wrong! Jane Birkin wasn’t carrying her basket bag that day during her flight! Her then partner Jacques Doillon actually ran it over during a fight lol! Jane actually carried her stuff in a sack and what fell was her diary. The Hermes Mr. Dumas, said her “agenda should have pockets” NOT THE BAG! Hahaha And yes! Totally correct! The Birkin was made to copy Jane Birkin’s also then partner’s (Serge Gainsbourg) Hermes bag, the HAC! That’s why it’s essentially a smaller version of the HAC 50 that Serge always carried! I’m so glad someone else finally commented at how wrong some of the videos are telling it!

Feel like i'm watching a well written and directed documentary and I'm not mad. More videos like this please vogue!❤
Felt like it was a Vox video
Tee Hee Wait... it’s not?
There are definitely more recent 'It' bags. Givenchy's 'Antigona', Céline's 'Mini Luggage' tote, Bottega Veneta's 'Intrecciato'. These were iconic too.
The celine is definitely what i think about. I would see that bag everywhere. So stupidly heavy too.
How daaaaaaaare you contradict Vooooooooogue 😬
Bottega Veneta’s pouch or cassette bag; intrecciato is simply the technique used to achieve that look.
The Antigona never had like SUCH a huge hype. The Luggage did, tho. Sold out everywhere and impossible to get.
Also the mulberry alexa
Are we gonna get an episode for ‘It Shoes’? It will probably be a longer one but I will for sure watch!!
olivia martinez omg yesssss
this would be very good
I m your 1K like
let’s not forget the Dior saddle and shoulder bags really becoming a cult classic now
There are so many visuals in this video its amazingly edited
When I was in Middle school, Jansport was the IT bag amongst students. Haha
Sunny at 23 totally!
Respect
Only the ones with the leather bottom
actually, they are coming back! at least in my country
outdoor
This man is speaking cursive.
Screams in bold italics
No he’s speaking in Serif Font
probably also be cursing in cursive?
Now the IT bag of almost every Millenial - Gen Z I see.. the Fjällräven Kanken lool
Erin Naguit I never thought about it that way but I think you’re right!
When I went to highschool Eastpak was THE IT bag haha
Erin Naguit in Middle School I remember every single girl had a Vera Bradley bag 😂
the it bag in nyc highschools/middle schools for teenage girls is the long champ bag
That’s definitely the case in the Nordic countries. I saw them EVERYWHERE so I got one too. I like that they promote sustainability and comfort unlike fashionable but not very useful bags in the video.
I love it when Vogue makes this kind of educational videos. Keep up with the good content Vogue!
The murakami LV collab was still one of the best collabs ever! I wish I had murakami LV’s 😭
the next it bag in my opinion is the Prada nylon 2005 re-edition but sadly its so rare that its not even sold online just in shops!
Some one I TOTALLY AGREE. I’m not sure where you live but I was able to find it online for sale in multiple colours.
Yes, i see it all over instagram
It is just for now after months it be the same old nylon bag that is so basic
I have one
i don’t agree, it looks super cheap to me and i think something else will come out that’s better then that.
I feel that seeing the Chanel quilted bag everywhere has made it lose its elegance. Same with the Dior Saddle
Yes - once something becomes widely accessible, it decreases in value.
Lisa F most of them are counterfeits.
@@LisaF777 except its only increasing in value...
Not at all... 😂 It’ll forever be a classic
Yeah and it’s not that special if u own the bag since everyone has it
Now this is a fashion video!
the editing, visual design, motion graphics, layouts/shots **chefs kiss** is so good, really love the aesthetic
The Editing is lit af.
I love Hamish Bowles, I can hear him talk for hours. How I would love to be a fly in the wall during his Met meetings. Thank you Hamish Bowles and Vogue for this awesome video!
I'd say the 2019 "It bag" would be the jacquemus mini bag
And lv multi pochetas
Truly the closest thing to an it bag se have nowadays
Mini bags with high price are So stupid that can carry only credit card and condom. Lol. I mean yeah those are trend now. But not a classic.
Or the Telfar Clemens Shopping Bag
definitely
For me, the bags that stood time were Louis Vuitton monogrammed bag with the different colors, the Hermes Jane Birkin bag and the Chanel bag.
The IT bag is the one YOU wear well and is YOUR go-to... I love Birkins, Kellys, and Lady Dior as much as anyone else, but everyone brings their own charm and wear to it
Loved this educational spin to something so loved by so many - the bag 🖤
More of this videos please! Its so informative and entertaining!!!
that was seriously informative, well done
5:18 i cried when i saw the wedding topper. even little things like this make me very happy. thank you vogue
Wow the production of this video is amazing! Makes me want an IT bag now. 😂😍
The Dior bag is such a classic bag ❤️😍
Jacobs era LV brings back childhood nostalgia because my mom had that Murakami Monogram bag back in the day
THIS WAS BEAUTIFUL PLS MAKE MORE SIMILAR VIDEOS 🥺🥺🥺
Love it!! please do more about this kind of videos!!
So informative, thank you so much. 🙏
I loved this video format, humorous yet informative. Please make more!
Love the in-depth historical narration. Very informative
Props to whoever made and edited the video, it was so entertaining!
I didn’t know i needed Kelly and Gucci Bamboo in my life but i do
I hope he does more of these! This was fantastic! Thanks Vogue!
Thanks for this video. I will acquire each and everyone of these bags in my bag collection. I love learning fashion history 🥰
A very interesting and well made video, thank you!
I love how on point every brand name pronounced by sir Hemish
Except Balenciaga, lol. I know it's French-owned now, but that doesn't change the fact that the name is Spanish and should be pronounced as such... just my opinion!
The visual and voice over are so soothing. I thought Proenza's PS1 would make it to the list - that was everywhere in 2014
Loved this, vogue should do more of this and educate the community ❤️
How is it possible the LV Multicolore is on the title card and this is exactly what I have been looking up on the pre-loves market. Strange coincidence, good problem to have
still saving up to buy mine even the knockoffs are expensive.
Youluvimani I recommend getting it on DHgate, it is so cheap yet the quality is so good!
You can find one at some Dillard’s, they are selling vintage bags in perfect conditions that were used in runways or belonged to collectors. The other day I bought a small white multicolore for only 998 dollars, it’s a very convenient price for a former it bag.
I love how the American vogue is made by british people. That’s why it’s one of the best
tedy_bu kawaii I love some of the humor in this lol
Lady dior and chanel quilted bag are timeless pieces ❤
By far the best video I have ever watched on KZhead. Thank you Vogue
Thank you Vogue.. I'm very appreciative .. You reminded me of my quilted bag I was gifted.. Sincerely Tanja
I hope one day to own each one of these bags all so iconic !
Incredible video! very informative with great graphics as well ! thank you
Excellent video! Great explanation, more of this please 🙌
The Alexander Wang Rockie was definitely an "it" bag back in 2014.
You’re either “IT” or your not. I’m the NOT
They didn't bring up Gucci, so I guess I'm not also.
I’m The It
I love seeing Vogue conquer the KZhead fashion space. Yes to new video ideas!!
Loved this video! Didn’t realize so many of these bags were brought out so long ago. Wow.
So glad I have the white LV Speedy multicolor Murakami. Such a gorgeous bag. Great video. I see Chloe is returning to use the padlock on many of their new designs again too.
Dwightinho56 I have the Murakami Cherries, I get so many compliments.
Trending. Deliciously gorgeous bags. Voice over incredible, presenting the 'it' fashion bag spectacular. .
Loved every second of this🥰
this video sets the bar soooo high for anything else you come out with! 😍😍😍
Hermes Birkin: "Am I a joke to you..?"
Loved this video! Definitely want to see more. Btw, Who remembers the CELINE luggage tote? That bag was EVERYWHERE
ya.... agreed. Leaving out the Luggage tote was a huge misstep
I CRYED I SCREAMED Thank you
More of this please. Also I need these skills for my next presentation
This was GREAT thank you Hamish! I will say MADONNA was a major factor for a lot of these brands bags success too!
I’ll take one of each! 🥰
Thanks Vogue for this video; the most interesting & important thing I've seen in a long while ❣️
The Prada Nylon Back Pack is my current IT bag, my back to school bag, my casual chic bag, etc etc 😍
Loewe (IMO) is the front-runner in creating the next "it" bags
They need to bring the multicolor print back
The classics 🥰🥰 been slowly but steadily getting many of the bags on this list that i like.
This was amazing!! More videos like this pleeaassee
Oh we stan this editing
Loved this video, make more like this! Notable mentions for the Givenchy Antigona and Celine Luggage! I think Birkin, Neverful, Chanel Flap Bag were left out because they aren't really 'it' bags as much as just holy grail classics.
the Antigona I'd shelve for the Pandora tbh. More iconic.
This edit was incredible... Please do more!
Loved this video- super well made, interesting info...
BIG UP!
Also the LV Palm Springs, Pochette Métis, Neverfull, YSL College, Niki, Sac de Jour are some It bags of recent years.
We need more videos like this😍
Love this video, so much nostalgia.
Alexander Wang has some quite unique bags! For instance his rhinestones bags.
Being “IT” is a mindset . Save ur money sis 😉
Oh yeah. Lets all pretend that we dont wanna have at least one. 😉
Only a low vibrational person would be impressed by dis 😬😬
...but if you have it to spend. Have fun.😁
honestly like I bought maybe 3 designer bags and it's crazy how it doesnt really change my life. I regret honestly spending all that money for something that doesnt not add one ounce of substance to my soul😢
frag keeping it real 🥺👏🏻
I LOVE THIS TYPE OF VIDEO! MAKE IT MORE
amazing editingggg ❤️😭
How come y’all didn’t mention the impact of Le Chiquito Mini in the current trend of micro bags?
Tealicious sure, Jan
Micro bag was a trend already when jacquemus made its mini bag..celine made nano bag but still big compare to micro bags. but it was fendi who started this trend the micro bag ...they make it as an accesories to the bag..like bag on a bag...
daeny targaryen yeah I know he did not created it but def had an impact putting it on the map 😋
At least in France the longchamps totes was an IT-bag for a while
Same in the US, among upper middle class people anyway. The knockoffs were popular for years as well.
What a great edit!!! Beautiful purses!
I love this video so much. Perfect.
When you already know the info. but still couldn’t afford a single bag mentioned!🤪
What's with the "cough" at 4:54 regarding the LV graffiti bag? 😂
Well made video! Thoroughly enjoyable!!
Wonderful Video... Thank you so very much! ♥️👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I've been seeing alot of younger woman ditching purses and wearing mini backpacks thou...🤔
plenty of brands have mini backpacks like the lv palm springs mini
Now you can find most of these IT bags if you search through thrift stores.
Yes!! I love this kind of content
This was a brilliantly produced video. The effort that went behind it looks staggering.
I used to want a murakami lv so bad when I was little lol
Sandy g. I inherited the murakami l V Cherries .. I love it!!
takashi murakami is the best fashion designer ever
Loved the editing 😍👍🏼
The amount of history and knowledge as well as bag art & just looks. Thank you VOGUEE
