Tons of Skylines are coming into the US now that they are old enough to import.
So a fun story about the NSX. I worked as an engineer at the Honda Anna Engine Plant in Ohio back in the late 90's. They had an employee improvement plan where as you made suggestions for improvement, you got points if that improvement was implemented. At the end of the year you could spend your points on gifts, etc. One prize was a weekend with the NSX (we had one at our factory parked outside with other fleet vehicles). My supervisor won the NSX for a weekend and he took me out in it over a lunch break. We tore up the back roads for a half hour. It was an amazing experience!

Hi Doug, the "Half Antenna" button wasn't only for aesthetic purposes. It was so you don't damage the antenna when you drive your NSX inside buildings with low ceilings or low roof parking areas, a common thing in Japan. Also because the antenna was something like 50 cm long at full length.
was thinking about this but i feel like it would still be low enough not to matter since the car is already so low. More likely for high speed to prevent damage is my guess.
Don`t have this half antenna feature in my 1988 RX 7 FC. But if I listen to CD or MD ( depending what is installed ) , the antenna dissapears ...
One of the biggest antennas I've seen

@@dw4lubu Just proves that Doug doesn't know SHIT about cars...
He's showing the car to people who have never seen one in person. It's actually really informative from a practical perspective instead of a figurative one like most reviewers have always given. He has to know much more than he talks about but a lot of the history and mechanical specifications are not relative to the subject matter that Doug is showcasing and reviewing, what it's like to actually drive the car.
Excellent review, Doug, as usual. I just wanted to add a few points that I think are important and worth to be mentioned: Honda is still manufacturing and providing ALL PARTS for the NSX cars up to date, no matter which year it's been built. Moreover, later models parts are compatible with earlier ones, they are fully interchangeable. You can even change earlier popping lights to late fixed ones or vice versa. The blank button on the console of the model you reviewed is for the headlights height setting which curiously was an option. The NSX was the first mass production car that had a full aluminum chassis. Last fact/feature: the engine was the first in the world to have titanium rods to improve the revs
Honda manufacturing all parts has not been my experience, a lot of NSX-specific, non-maintenance parts are now discontinued - windshields, for example. If you have a source for parts I'd be interested :)
@@victorzaccardo well I'm sorry to read that. In France there is an NSX club who can maybe help you. I'll check to find their contact. Now maybe it will not work for parts like lights or bumpers cause safety regulations are different but for the rest of the parts it should be OK. I'll check and get back to you 👍
NSX rods were an alloy that actually only have a small amount of titanium. Rods in the C6 Z06 were actually full forged titanium aftermarket rods supplied by either Pankl or Mahle.
That is probably not accurate I'm afraid; either in availability or interchangeability. Case in point would be the cruise control module (don;t remember the exact part name). The module in my '99 died, and it was not available any longer. Unfortunately several different P/N modules were used, and it is a guess as to whether or not interchangeability is possible. It might be, but it's a rather high cost risk to take as they are generally not returnable, even from Honda/Acura. That said, this was my experience. I may have a lazy dealership, so if you have a supplier, I'm all open to suggestion.
Still can’t believe how bold and daring Honda was back in the day.
This was 1990. Great economy great cars and risk.
@@zuranku yeah no kidding, 80s and early 90s Japan was no budget on everything lol...most of Japanese manufactures had multiple sports cars being produced at once...most any manufacture that isn't high end has one sports car if that...and its usually re-badged or has borrowed parts.
All the Japanese companies dropped sports cars back then. Supra, VR4, RX7, 300ZX, etc. As for other Hondas the Del Sol was also really beautiful especially with the targa top off. Del Sol was my first car 21 years ago and I was hoping to score an NSX one day but not for the price they are asking. I settled on a used S2000 and feel satisfied with it.

Fun Fact: Ayrton Senna had a hand in the development of the NSX.
Another cool fact: Gordon Murray got his inspiration to start developing the McLaren F1 (arguably the greatest road car ever made) right after driving an Honda NSX. The Honda NSX might be the reason why the greatest supercar ever made exists.
Another fact, a stroked reinforced twin turbo NSX can give a McLaren F1 a run for its monetary worth. I've always liked the first gen NSX but I don't like the design of the car revolves around the V6 Accord drivetrain.
RIP
@@JoRgEChavez-to2xd but they didn't revolve around the Accord V6. The engine was from Honda's V10 formula1 platform. They just deleted 4 cylinders. In the 90s Honda was the top F1 manufacturer when they were teamed up with Mcleran.

Nah Doug. The half button is so you can pull into a low ceiling garage without the antenna hitting the ceiling. Super common in Japanese cars.
He knows, and has said this of similar systems previously. Maybe he just forgot.
Richard Hammond also misattributed it to aerodynamics when reviewing the NSX-R saying the engineers did that to enable higher speeds when the radio was on. I only know about the convertible version because of a brief appearance in Fast and Furious four and as I'm not American, for me it is the Honda NSX, not the Acura.
I would absolutely prefer the fixed top.
The hardtop is nearly always better looking than the convertible (Toyota 2000GT, Aston Martin DB6 etc).
The targa top just made it a worst driving car. Like any car you take the top off of that wasn't designed as a convertible first
The NSX is absolutely my favorite car design of all time. It is definitively timeless. I think as time passes its importance as a magnum opus of auto design will continue to solidify.
I'm old enough to remember the original magazine reviews on this car. At the time, it was regarded as nice, but underwhelming--reviewers walloped it hard for only making 250 hp compared to it's rivals. I do like the canopy-style roof---even in 2021, it still looks fresh and futuristic

Never seen an NSX in that color probably was never made available for the NA market. Such a stunning, yet simple, design. I'll end up owning one of these before I cease to exist.
The "Half" button is for clearance in car parks and domestic garages (Japanese models only). In other markets the "Half" button became front fog lights and the "blanks" were used for heated seats or light adjustment.
Great review Doug! As an NSX owner I never noticed that the AC recirc buttons were profiled as a "bloated NSX" cool to point out the quirk. A few corrections: the original NSX has 270 HP not 250, and you said that this is somewhat of an ordinary engine. I would say that is in fact an extraordinary engine; it was Honda's first VTEC "yo" in a production car, it also has titanium connecting rods and an 8,000 rpm redline. Honda was at it's peak in F1 racing during that era and they wanted to show off with the NSX. So, that's not your everyday minivan V6. The wheels are 15" in front as you said, but they are 16" in the rear. It was purposely double staggered to make room for a dead pedal and to make the pedal placement proper (unlike it's Italian competition) and to make a low sleek hood-line. Those little wheels are super light since they are forged. By the way from the factory they came with bespoke super soft and sticky Yokohamas and a what many would consider a "track alignment" so grip was incredible even with the relatively small contact patches. This is also the 30th anniversary of the NSX. Unfortunately it's during covid so Honda could not have a big celebration of it's cost-no-object, hand built, 90's flagship vehicle this year. And yes the ignition key is cool too, it's heavy as you mentioned, but it's also made of Monel alloy which does not react to sweat. One final design aspect to point out--the whole chassis and body is aluminum, a first for production cars, and its a semi-monocoque design, not your typical uni-body. So the NSX is special, and people like me who wanted one in high school can finally attain one. That's really why the prices are steadily rising.
TLDR. It’s just a spicy Honda Accord with a body kit and the engine in the wrong hole
He was half right. The automatics were 250 hp, but the manuals were 270 hp. Also all of the 3.2L engines were 290 hp, but rated at 276 hp in Japan due to the gentleman's agreement.
It was also the first "production" car with an electric power steering system when the 95-96 NA1s came out (and the NA2s from 97-05). I have a 97 and I love the fact that the electric assist turns off once you hit 37MPH so you have much more steering feel at higher speeds...don't know why other car companies haven't implemented a similar design because it works beautifully IMO.
It might have been first car in US with VTEC but not Honda's first VTEC engine , in Europe we got civics with b16a VTEC engine in 1989 first nsx wasn't released till 1990

@НАТО в шоке, США обосрались Say good night, Raquel
9 minutes and 37 seconds later..... 👍👍
All of those r33s in the background 😍
Thanks for the awesome video Doug! Love the NSX, now you have to find a 3rd gen Prelude with 4 wheel steering
Well now it’s going to go up even more in value because of this video
Making it further out of reach for me...
It's not gonna be worth it anymore if it's 458 money. Same with every popular jdm car
Me: "Okay, I'll see what kind of bids they have" Seconds later Me: "Nope"
The numbers Mason! What do they mean??
42k. Wow! With mileage you probably have another 100k miles you can put on it, but it's weird it is still so expensive now.
I dont know why but... When the pop ups headlight goes up its so satisfying
I remember going to a car meet and there was an nsx, but the owner actually let me sit in it... Best day of my life it felt so unreal yet so exciting, the nsx has been my dream car for soo long I can't remember it's just a masterpiece of engineering 🙌
I’d love it if you could do a review of the Nissan GTR R33 that was in the background
Correction, the wheels are 15" front 16" rear, the 3.0 engine is 270 hp, the climate control has auto and manual controls. Great video.
I noticed the wheels. Was wondering about climate control. Mine is never automatic and I frankly forgot how you switch. Doug missed the funky side vents that stick up up when pressed on the sides. Figured that would be his favorite quark...

@D W, correction for your correction. The model he reviewed is from Japan where they have the “gentlemen” agreement where HP is limited. And in the US, the Acura NSX had two engines. The manual 3.0V6 is 270hp while the automatic 3.0V6 is 252hp. In Japan, all Honda NSX uses the detuned 252hp engine regardless of manual or auto. However, in the US because it’s badged as an Acura instead of Honda, the manual is tuned to 270hp to distinguish it from the lesser Honda brand.
@@lordmaster5522 but i think the later JDM models have over 270hp too
Oh my God these Skylines in the background, I'm in love!
This was most definitely my poster car as a teenager. I had a MR2 turbo at the time, but lusted for the Pearl white NSX...!
Its shooting up in value because of this video.
Coincidence.
I would not mind to have that in my garage!!
Wouldn't mind ?😂 I dream about having that in my garage
Wouldn't mind to have a garage to have that in! 😍
@Riya Yadav I have all of those in my garage , on need for speed payback
Same!
Starting at $240,000, it's yours.
In 1990 when I first saw the NSX I was in love, and now when I see a pic/vid of it from time to time I still fall in love with it. Its just amazingly proportioned not only horizontally, but vertically too, from all angles, sides, front and rear! There are maybe two dozen cars as simply eloquently designed as the NSX in the passed 100 years! Buy an NSX if you can acquire one, and dont drive it keep it in protection wait 10-20 years, I'm not the Creator I dont know for certainty the future but it'll be a supe high collectors assest as more years pass especially extreme clean samples. Anyways greetings from Turkiye! I love this car! :) Oh and Doug thank you to you too, doing a good job! :)
For my generation, the NSX was a supercar made by the company that once produced the CVCC. That's coming a long ways, akin to Hyundai's journey from Excel to Stinger. It's delightful to watch a company hit upon performance - sort of a milestone.
It doesn’t matter if you love an specific kind of car, whenever you see an NSX, you can’t help but stare. Timeless design IMO.
They look even better in person love it!
Not rather timeless i would say, cuz you can clearly tell what era its from.
@@babineaux. The newer version is def timeless with the updated headlights
State of the art engineering, timeless design, spectacular reliability, and being a literal automotive icon of the 1990's! It's about time!
Ahh the 90s... When most all car designs were unique and distinctive.
Such a good gear box. It was why I bought a type R in 1998.
"I'm not sure I can really give you appropriate advice on a mass-production car," Senna told the team. "But I feel it's a little fragile." Ayrton Senna, F1 driver giving his opinion about the nsx prototype after testing it.
Damn he got that a little wrong lol
@@AN2Felllla Maybe his critique helped them to make it even more reliable and just an overall good car
After Senna critiqued the nsx, Honda went back and stiffened the chassis 50%. They listened to him. Thats why the coupe is preferable to the targa top.
Manuel Aguirre this man knows he’s facts. SENNA THE 🐐
@@manuelaguirre1062 I think he actually helped with the suspension setup on track testing, alongside Satoru Nakajima.
I feel like I'm always the only person who thinks the NSX was one of the greatest looking cars of all time. **** the etype. This is amazing.
Mentioning the NSX along the E-Type is like comparing a Garfield strip to the Mona Lisa. Both are great but only one is a legend.
@@Jaml321. I take it your talking about the NSX cause I think the same
Me too.
@@Shane-zx4ps Nice try, but the NSX can't hold a candle to an E-Type.
No sir, I have the same opinion. I have a JDM 2000 RZ-S Supra which I wouldn't trade it for nothing in this world but I must agree that NSX NA1 was and still is the best 90's Japanese car as a whole package.
Doug! You should have said something about Ayrton Senna participation on the development! As you always says this interesting things, you missed a really important one!
Hah I grew up around there and my folks live near those roads. Immediately recognized Katella Ave!!
God i love this car, shame it's so expensive over here tho
Expensive ? Man... we Indian don't even get to see here
Over here? You mean everywhere......
How much is it in the states?
@@rubenlay610 most of the listings on autotrader are $60k or more

This is the official Japanese Ferrari
It weirdly looks better than the Ferrari from that time!
Dont forget the mitsu gto which was only like 4 tenths of a second slower than the nsx in the 1/4 mile
Yessir. And the Ford GT is the American Ferrari.
@@bderrick4944 Yea, loved the movie Ford Vs Ferrari. Ford GT is one of the most legendary American supercars!
@@stunnasaad Definitely. I also love the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40
Doug tryna sell the hell outta this car. Love the older Acura interior.
as i grow up, i think this is my favorite car ever, a car that i would really love to have
Definitely one of the cars I would own if I was a collector. Alongside with the LFA, the Mk4 Supra and of course the Carrera GT.
My list would have 3 of them :)
Same here
All museums cars
I'd add a 90s Mazda rx7
@@levigamer09 me too 👍
12:10 the new nsx? ok This is one of my favorite cars ever! I fell in love with it in a game GTA SAN ANDREAS where it went by name "Infernus". Later I found it in other video games and I remember it was so unusual to see brand "Acura", I always wondered where are they. Turns out - not in Europe! 😆

Dear Doug Demuro, in my NSX, near the handbrake, there are all four buttons! Front fog lamp, rear fog lamp, headlight wiper, headlight height. My 1991 NSX 3.0 manual transmission has 274 horsepower! He doesn't have 250!
Absolutely stunning, one of the most beautiful sports car of all !
As cool as the NSX is, I can't take my eyes off the R33s on the back, such a nice and underrated car
Who knows. Maybe he’ll review one of those R33s since he’s at TopRank.
God I wish Nissan and these other Japanese companies could just replicate the 90s cars sell them here with same engines just updated emissions etc etc. They would sell like crazy
