  • funny isnt it, when you have done something so long and are extremely good like this, it is so hard to show somebody in slow motion or even at times explain how and what you do, you just do it lol but this was an excellent video and explained great!

  • Hi budd, I came here looking how to lay down the mortar by moving the trowel side-to-side. You've nailed it for me, many thanks. Your mortar is lovely and fluid, mixing by hand I'm not getting quite that consistency, but then I think the 'building sand' I purchased is more toward sharp sand.

  • Really good video - rolling the muck had to be done if your not using plasticiser or lime with gritty sand (render sand). The advantage is with gritty sand is you wont be repointing gables and chimneys for 100 years - however you still have to fill the perps - seen plenty of popped perps on supermarket builds high up 4 years old......keep up the good work Budd

  • a very informative and useful video by a true craftsman. you make it look so easy! I think that getting the mix to the correct consistency is crucial but is something I can't seem to get right. it is either too sloppy that it falls off the trowel and slops down the brick wall face, or too stiff necessitating using a hammer to 'force' the brick level. then sometimes the mortar is setting too quick when laying the brick so I have to take the brick off, scrape the mortar off and do it again, very frustrating. can you share your tips on achieving the perfect mortar consistency please?

  • Any chance you could do a video showing some repair work, like for example if someone has knocked bricks out of the middle of a wall and you want to replace them. Is it just the same as this? How do you get the last brick in etc, also for repairing holes where a boiler flue has to be bricked back up when changing old boilers or water heaters with the square flues to a newer round flue for example. I have no idea how you would fill the gaps etc.

    • Hi Liam those of us who spent a lifetime working around London for every animal sub contractor there ever was.and worked with hundreds of bricklayers from all over the u.k.and learnt every quick method and trick there was.we can see the difference between those who have played in the premier league and those who are quite decent bricklayers but wouldn't have lasted to long on these high pace high pressure sites. used to sack the slowest bricklayer every day.another one was freely available.doing domestic extentions for unsuspecting members of the public is nothing like a big site where you have to produce high volumes of high standard brickwork every day.every body watches you and susses you out if you don't perform and compete you will soon be gone.but I loved this competitive environment it brought the best out of me I used to thrive.bricklaying can become a compulsive magnificent obsession.like those who play music and get every note right.bricklaying is the same you have to get every aspect of it right.
