Can't take another moment of Vivaldi's ubiquitous Four Seasons? Neither could Max Richter, a London-based composer who deftly blurs the lines between the classical and electronic worlds. Long ago he loved it the piece but like some of us, he grew tired of the overplayed warhorse, which can be found in no fewer than 250 recordings on sites like ArchivMusic.
So instead of writing off the piece forever, Richter rewrote it. He discarded about three quarters of Vivaldi's original, substituted his own music and tucked in some light electronics for a total Four Seasons makeover. It sounds a little hipper - lighter on its feet in places, darker and more cinematic in others. Still, Richter's remodeled version retains the basic shape, and much of the spirit, of the master's original four violin concertos - each about ten minutes and in three movements, sequenced fast-slow-fast.
Richter recorded his rejiggered Seasons with violin soloist Daniel Hope and together they brought the project to (Le) Poisson Rouge, the Greenwich Village music space, where we had our cameras set up and ready to roll.
In Richter's reimagining, you'll recognize more than a few weather-related signposts like the violin's shivering figures in "Winter" and bolts of thunder in stormy "Summer." Yet in other places the music is heavily disguised. The cheerful birdsong that opens Vivaldi's "Spring" emerges as mere shards of the original, backed by moody pedal points in the electronic low end, lending it a movie music feel. And Vivaldi's violin horn calls in the finale of "Autumn" morph into a comforting minimalist blanket of warm double basses and electronics.
The revamped Vivaldi is about as "classical" as Richter gets. For a taste of his more electronic side, the second half of this concert features selections from Infra, dance music he wrote for London's Royal Ballet, based on T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. For this music, Richter pares down to just a piano, his laptop and a string quartet, but he weaves in many unusual sounds. Here you'll find a dusty treasure-trove of old shortwave radio signals, industrial rumbles, clicks and pops serving as the underlying bed for Richter's gritty and forlorn soundscapes. -- TOM HUIZENGA

That beginning might be the most beautiful thing i've ever heard
Yeah, Spring is absolutely gorgeous.
Spring is lit. This year though as my best friend died in July I can't take my ears from summer. Especially summer 2. Touches the soul of how beautiful it is 😢😳
@@krepler sorry for your loss
I keep repeating it. The fleeting strings underscored by the soothing bass is like slow, tearful appreciation of a world of butterflies on a warm day... Just happy to be alive.
If you listen to the chord progression you can hear its one of the most used :) But Vivaldi will always be my favorite composer off all time thats just me:)
I grew up in in a household with an audiophile father who spent the majority of his surplus income on the finest hi-fi equipment available at the time in the 1960’s. Classical music of every description was played at extreme volume almost every night rather than bedtime stories and the music itself created the imagery. Vivaldi was always a favorite.. and with this re-composition, I feel reborn again. Simply magnificent. Thank you !
for me, this is a dialogue between Antonio Vivaldi in the 18th century and Max Richter in the 21st century. both geniuses in their time! loved this.
You hit it on the head
A perfect statement
Yes, but I wish I knew more about what each is contributing.
@@Rnankn you can Google both and see what they are each “contributing”
@@erikaperezrubio9463 yea i could just google everything i ponder for the rest of my life. But google doesn’t provide the answers I want. Google doesn’t care how I feel.
Max Richter's version of the four seasons is so emotional and intense to me, I could get lost wandering for the entire length of it.
I've been listening to Max Richter for quite a while and I'm convinced he's a genius, he needs more recognition!
I love classical music because of the emotion it can evoke without lyrics, I highly dislike math and stats. I avoid them at all costs.
why he needs? his music wil be there without ego even on deeper level, if he composed out of ego he will never go as deep.
I share your love for music and dislike stats to some extent. Although, I don't with math and logic being the antagonists to art and emotion. Understanding math comes along with high analytical skills which I discovered are necessary for improving on my own art and which helps me recognize layered emotions in more difficult work of others. And coming up with a mathematical proof requires a high intuition of the subject, that's why often it may seem to have come out of thin air. Many times I had a similar awestruck feeling of wonder to that of appreciating high art while going through an elegant proof to a complex problem, making me curious about the author's disposition and his/her unique view on the matter. To me, mathematics is a thing of beauty.

I came for Summer and fell in love with Spring.
@Sandcastle •Lol I have watched it. Multiple times. Why would you assume that I haven't?
Me too... the only spring remake i have ever liked... everybody likes summer i guess..
@@bibaolaitan5189 Me too! :D I love Richter's entire Spring recomposition. Spring 3 I find particularly wonderful ♥️ I tend to skip over Spring in other versions and just listen to Summer and Winter.
I know what you meant but that statement in itself was quite profound. Weather you meant it or not, nice.

Ingenious and marvelous ! I am 83 years old and Vivaldi's Four Seasons has been part of my life, and my enjoyment for over 70 years.I find this reimagining to be absolutely refreshing and enjoyable.Love it. It is really brilliant. Will listen to it again and again along with Vivaldi's original composition. And ,you know, I think Vivaldi would agree !. Viva progress !
I love you Leslie. I mean that with all my heart. I hope this message finds you surrounded by loved ones and in good health. Or at the very least, I hope you still have enjoyment whilst listening to this
May you be happy eternally. ❤
I literally played this album each morning for a year to start my day. True story.
Oh, I know... I saw you listening to this album each morning for a year to start your day and I thought to myself, 'Anthony really seems to like that Reimagining Vivaldi music album.'
I love the music, but also the sensitive way in which the video has documented the participation of each musician and the conductor, their gestures and eye contact. It reveals the unique connections between people in live performance.
Loved this aspect as well, glad I'm not the only one who appreciated it.
Spring is singular - absolutely beautiful.
I had a music professor that would always teach that the best composers take themes from previous composers then incorporate into their own style making it new and different.
Can't believe this performance is nearly 8 years old now. I have been listening to it regularly the whole time and never tire of it.
This is so beautiful, starting with Spring, to me illustrating the fragility of life but its relentless energy that pushes through in this most beautiful season.
Resonating - succinctly said, thank you.
This is nothing but the pristine expression of purity and ethereal beauty. This masterpiece has brought tears to my eyes like nothing has ever done before. I feel like this is what my life has always been about : playing this with my headphones on and letting myself fade away with the notes in the infinity of space and time. I'm so thankful that i stumbled across this video. I hope y'all enjoyed it as much as I did.
I wish the recording was a notch louder though :(
You got that right
I think Max Richter has ascended to the next level of music, as have the performers of his music. As young musicians we learn technique, scales, repertoire, touch, how to honor the composers. It's not until we have mastered all those things that we can trust ourselves, our technique, all our practice, that we can become fully enveloped in the music and just... play. Max Richter just takes me there with his music.
Okay so .....I started crying at 10:21, which turned to full blown weeping at 17:45 . I want to thank Max ( which is short in German for Maximillian which means "the greatest") Daniel Hope & the rest of the musicians for renewing my love for the heart instrument, the violin. So beautiful, so everything that it is & my words can't say. Thank you.
You lasted longer than I did :')
Your comment made me laugh, then I listened to it, I'm not laughing now
I agree - so heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once
@@andreaulbrick2254 I listen to a wide variety of music and I actually find, for me, that symphonic music like this, like the classical greats, invigorates me mostly. I can listen to the heaviest, darkest black metal and it calms me....

Max Richter definitely the most talented artist among his contemporaries. I fell in love every compose he made.
This remains on of the most beautiful things I have ever heard, hands down. I tell people to go listen to it

An oasis of a masterpiece, in a desert of insanity. Thank you for uploading.
How can a piece of music make you feel so much? Spring to me is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. Like many others, it conjures up rapturous moments of happiness; an adolescent memory of running through fields of wheat grass, barefoot, wide eyed and hearts full. Listening to this swells my heart. I would do anything to hear this played by an orchestra in person.
I always say Classical music is the sound of life. How Max was able to put new life into Vivaldis work, without straying far from the original is incredible.
Just discovered it, listening to this, over & over & over again ♥️✨ What a pleasure to be alive, to be able, to listening to this genius maestro Max Richter 🙏🏻😍😭😍
I'm "obsessed" by this recomposed Vivaldi's seasons, touching, moving, in fact nature in pure reality. Well done, Mr. Max Richter.
The music is so beautiful, but man see Max Richter's face when playing is a whole level of beauty..
I love it so much that I listen and watch again periodically throughout my life. This is possibly my favorite orchestra performance. It moves me like no other. The lead violinist is amazing, but the entire orchestra has a continuity that I just so enjoy. I love this.
When the first composition begins and you immediately start bawling, you know the music has a powerful message for you.
This recomposition is life. It's a masterpiece.
Max you are my favorite artist, sir. Thank you for your work. Sometimes when I am alone and the state of the world is bringing me down, I listen to your version of Spring 0-1 and have a good cry.
I so love this, when I am feeling blue, this performance takes me to new heights of happiness, thanks to you Max Richter and to all the performers. It's magic, I sometimes pretend that I am the violinist -and I'm pretty good.
I close my eyes, and I am there; Standing in the beautiful nature, I see the sun rising, the cheer of excited birds, the bumblebees humming, Even the smallest details of sunlight shivering the dewdrops on the fresh blooming grass, the pollen on the flowers, their smell, the joy, the beginning of a new Spring. Nature is magic, god is real and Max Richter is a genius!
This man is a true genius. His music is on different parallels I'm not just talking the recomposed Valvadi Four season but all his Master pieces. Antonio vivaldi would be looking down and saying,' The boy has done good..
What immagination.
I cried!!!! I laughed! Several times!!!! Completely fantastic!!! Stunning!!! I'm just a photographer with passion for violins... Thank you so much! You turned my life much better with this concert! Each day practicing a little bit more this amazing instrument!
"Just" a photographer? Isn't immortalizing beauty already a lot, Vanessa?
Yes! But I don't know the Art of Harmony of the Sound yet... I'm trying to learn that too...
Vanessa Freire Good human being you are. Life has amazing gifts for those willing to listen to it.
Vanessa Freire Have a look to 'Werckmeister harmóniák', you might find the harmony you're looking for. If not, you'll still enjoy the wonderful images and sounds ;)
Vanessa Freire You'll learn faster then you think. Harmony resides in your brain from birth. You just have to give it a little push.
Vivaldi described The Four Seasons as The Contest Between Harmony and Invention and in my opinion I think he would be pleased with how Max Richter has reinvented his music with more a modern feel but still retaining the original harmony. I still love the traditional intensity and voluptuousness of Adrian Chandler's Summer and Winter versions but I adore Richter's as well.
I feel like I'm transforming, refining, and shapeshifting into a playful color filled fairy, thank you~
Ah, what ecstasy it is to the human mind and soul the simple pleasure of listening to the classics, and even more ecstatic it is to listen to the familiar notes renditioned in a way that mingles the old with the new, tradition with modern, the heartbreak of the long gone and forgotten, with joy of remembrance; honoring its memory, paying its respects... Ah, to live and witness such wonders, basking in the glory of one fine November morning accompanied with the delicious smell of a strong cup of coffee Arabica are enough amends to replenish one's soul of the sorrows of the very same life... isn't that just marvelous?
I am wholeheartedly convicted that this is the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
As you would expect of a composer who once studied with the great modernist Luciano Berio, Richter is very self-aware. He notices that his own taste in repeating patterns doesn’t mesh with the apparently similar patterns in Vivaldi. They obey a different logic, and the friction between them generates a fascinatingly ambiguous colour. Richter teases out and heightens this colour, sometimes with Vivaldi uppermost, sometimes himself. It is a subtle and often moving piece of work, which suggests that after years of tedious disco and trance versions of Mozart, the field of the classical remix has finally become interesting.
These arrangements brought me to tears. During all my years of study at TheConservatory THIS is how I imagined Vivaldi but was discouraged from expressing it. It is SO validating to know that others hear what I hear underneath the actual manuscript. Bravo & thank you.
I can't listen to this at work. I work in construction and my coworkers are hard men. This music (symphony?) makes me weep as I imagine I would if I had just destroyed the entire world by pure accident. That wouldn't be a good look at work. It's the video I go to when I think I can't handle anymore pain. The video I watch when I'm contemplating quitting, killing, or worse...and it never fails to make all of that melt away and fill me with love, wonderment, and hope. Hope being the most addictive emotion that I have the words to express. My dream is to one day see this in person. I just hope I get to see it all before people realize I'm not supposed to be there.
@@DEATH_TO_TYRANTS I hope you get to see it in person some day.
@@trn0m961 Thank you for that. I hope you are surrounded by loved ones, music in the air, kids running around, good drink and food a plenty. @@King-balloon I lost my good headphones a year or so back (Jabra elite something or another) and have just been blasting music such as this for the whole world to hear. You should see and hear some of the responses I get from different guys haha. Mainly fire alarm install. There's times when I moonlight as a pipe fitter with the sprinkler side and sometimes dabble in other life safety systems. How about you? It's a beautiful update - Vivaldi is perfection. How •can* you add to it? By feeding it the love, respect and life of 20th & 21st century experience. I believe that Max Richter has been able to do that for us. It's beautiful music, changed, and fuelled by respect, and love.
Very lovely. Quite something to see and hear so many coming together in perfect harmony. Imagine if that was your day at work it would be a very satisfying drive home.
The video is just beginning & I've never heard this before. I'll comment again when it's over. Am I in for a treat? I imagine so.
Winter 3... Here, it's a whole new level. The title of this album, Reimagining Vivaldi, is so accurate because it is not simply re-playing Vivaldi, but taking his music to an uncharted territory.
I normally listen to indie rock music and stumbled upon this. Spring III is amazing! That violinist bouncing that bow consistently is amazing.
The best of the best! Totally in awe!

Vivaldi is the greatest of all composers have lived til today. He was kissed by Godfather himself, his empathy with nature is overwhelming. I think, with this wonderful piece of reworking his compositions makes him more than the word happy can discribe, while he is listening to it from far behind.
