Composer: Felix Mendelssohn
Felix Mendelssohn was a virtuoso pianist, and it worth remembering that he was born in 1809, with his friend Schumann being born a year later in 1810, as was Chopin, and Liszt following in 1811. These composers were among the greatest pianists of the 19th century, and they were born at a time when the piano was a relatively modern instrument, and composers such as Hummel, Moscheles (Mendelssohn’s friend), Kalkbrenner and Ries were accorded adulation similar to pop stars today. Beethoven commenced his career in the 1790s as a virtuoso pianist.
No surprise then that the young Mendelssohn composed extensively for his chosen instrument from the outset. From early concertos and sonatas he quickly established his ‘mature’ style in works such as the Rondo capriccioso, and the Andante cantabile e Presto agitato. The masterpieces that followed include the remarkably imposing Variations serieuses and the famous Songs without Words.
Mendelssohn’s style did not change throughout his short creative life - he very quickly composed in what we know as his mature style from his early teens, something even Mozart didn’t achieve.
This album contains the Songs without Words, Variations serieuse, Kinderstucke, Rondo capriccioso, Capriccio, and Trois Fantasies ou Caprices plus several shorter works.

One thing I like about my favourite composer, Schumann, is that he broke off his friendships with people who didn't like Mendelssohn. When I was young there was quite a lot of perjudice against Mendelssohn for being facile. When I was 15 or16 I sang in one of his choral works in the church choir and wrote in my diary, "I will nver say a bad word about Mendelssohn again." I loved playing the Songs without Words that I could manage technically and especially loved the the first one in E major which Schumann said flowed form the purest of springs.
@ Felix de Villiers= I didn't know that about Schumann.Good for him.A man of conviction who recognizes talent Mendelssohn has written some of the most beautiful and enduring music .I think he others were just jealous.I DO remember a few composers were considered too lightweight of much praise or concert space when I was young too..Delius was another -and his music has enriched my life as much as Beethoven's.
For people who did not like the man, or did/could not enjoy his music? Sounds one hell of a reason to break up a friendship. Pity the deaf friends he may have previously had. :(
@@zapazap - No, I know Schumann exaggerated but I like his commitment to Felix M. Schumann did start admiring Wagner but he died before the big operas were composed. He was one of the only musicians in Germany to defend Berlioz and wrote an analysisi of the Symphonie Fantastique.
I too had a prejudice against him. Too saccharine, not avant-garde, oh I do not know why. The crashes of Beethoven fit more with my adolescent self. Now I seek calm, melody and even sound levels so as not jump out of my chair. I will never look down on him again.
@@michaelnancyamsden7410 - He was simply one of the great composers. The whole Mendelssohn family, especially the father, as Jews were anxious to fit into their adopted culture and not to do anything that stuck out as Schumann's music does, but Felix was conscious of this and a marvellous feeling of estrangement runs through his mj0sic. The Scotsch Symphony, the Hebrides. I often played the first Song without Words in E major and when I come to the so-called home key at the end I feel very far from home in some oither home beyond. Felix was better than moist Romantics at not simply repeating the first part but adding something to it, as in this Song i mentioned where he adds something from the middle section.

1:08:18 The-more I listen to Mendelssohn, the more I realize how smoothly , rhythmically and harmoniously, his divine chords flow.
Mendelssohn was the first composer to transport my soul. I could visualize entire plays in my head while listening to his scores in my grandparent's apartment in NYC.
Not enough people take advantage of Mendelssohn when thinking about football. :-)
Every piece is a lyrical story!
@lamorton9435 Indeed. And the scherzo at 2:17:47 tells the story of a cartoon mouse fleeing a cartoon cat. (I'm simply a font of such sublime music criticism.)

01:23:46 The intro of this piece is fascinating!
It’s a really good piece!!!
Sounds like a pop song! Amazing
Mendelssohn was the complete musician: composer, performer and conductor. His music is always well-written, beautiful, logical and the gateway composer for young pianists learning to perform because his music is eminently playable. While he doesn't stand up to Beethoven or Chopin's eminence, he is a great composer whose music will live forever. His "Variations Serieuses" is the entry to recital performance of the Masters. I played it at my first major recital and never looked back.
well said
Only the greatest child prodigy ever.......
@@frankrandle4553 Just look at the earliest music he wrote and you will find a man-child who wrote magnificently even in puberty.
Why compare his music to Beethoven or Chopin? They are all masters of their own, very different, but all made musical landscape immensely richer and enjoyable. Which stars in the sky are better than the others?
@@stonefireice6058 I agree completely, but let's face it: there are degrees of "genius."

The quality is great, the pianists are great, and Mendelssohn, just brilliant.
I can say I had never paid much attention to Mendelssohn´s piano works before, but Brilliant Classics has offered me a pleasant surprise! Every single track sounds so smooth, gentle and joyful! Thanks for sharing!
jose, - was just going to write the same myself, beautiful piano music!
Mendelssohn composed circles around Mozart!
Jewel Levy I have to say that you know nothing about Mozart and Mendelssohn
@Konstantin Ridaya Mozart definitely was not the first to compose music for solo keyboard. Unless you conveniently forgot the great Bach who also has solo works for keyboard.
@@CK-kd5pn - He wrote that "Mozart invented the entire GENRE", classical music that is. Bach is baroque music. Baroque music is a style of Western art music composed from approximately 1600 to 1750. This era followed the Renaissance, and was followed in turn by the Classical era. Baroque music is tuneful and very organized and melodies tend to be highly decorated and elaborate. Bach in 1750 has traditionally been regarded as the end of the Baroque Period. Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven composed during the Classical Period. The well-known Classical era of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven is said to have begun in 1775. The transitional, 25 year period between is known as Rococo.
To Brilliant Classics, thank you for this heavenly piano work on Mendelssohn! I have experienced some of his works that I have in my collectuon, and there is nothing comparable. Therefore, I must conclude on the brilliant merit of these Interpreters who must have entered Mendelssohn's soul and spirit and have enhanced what most beautiful ethereal and sublime they found there... My liking Mendelssohn as a composer has changed radically with the heavenly interpretation of the talented interpreters that you found. My immense Gratitude.
I completely forgot about Mendelssohn. Thanks for reminding me. ❤
MENDELSOHN composed a killer VIOLIN CONCERTO that stunned the world back then and continues to amaze us and our future generations. To think that he cant even play Violin but managed to compose such a high level Violin Concerto that even Paganini would be impressed. Mendelsohn is one of those composers that take time to grow on you. Once that happens, you will be drawn into his genius musical mind and will start to search in youtube for more of his other works.
His Italian Symphony is just wonderful, esp played fast eg von Karajan.
yes...indeed......uncanny how many composers died so young...just imagine had Mendelssohn lived a full long life what more he could have given to the world. Same with Chopin..Schubert..and others

The Wonderfulness and Greatness and Gorgeousness of Mendelssohn is immeasurable and beyond description and off the charts
Beautiful the Andante con moto in E Major, Op.19 , n.1. It reminds me of other times in my life. I was suddenly moved by listening to it. The wonderful things in life.
What a treasure trove of musical works..
I'm not a particular fan of Mendelssohn but there is no denying that this set of pieces is a veritable treasure trove, with a lot of hidden gems. Equally impressive, though, is both the interpretation and the production. Both do an excellent job of quiet competence, fundamentally getting out of the way of the music and allowing it to speak for itself without unnecessary distraction. Forget some of the big names in terms of both performers and labels; this is an object lesson in charming music, played intelligently and with a beautiful piano sound. Well done to all involved.
Thank you, Brilliant Classics! You have done music lovers a great service!
Leonardy's performance of the songs without words are, for me, the best yet and I've heard plenty. What a great surprise. Thank you for this compilation
I was introduced to classical music by Mendelssohn when I listen to the cassette tape Mendelssohn's Greatest Hits. It has hits like the violin concerto, rondo cappricioso, Piano Trio #1, Piano Concerto, Wedding March, Italian symphony. From there I bought more and more Sony Essential Classics tapes. I must have collected over a 100 tapes. Anywho, I guess I have Mendelssohn to thank for me being able to appreciate classical music. Thanks to have I also was able to enjoy Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius, Elgar, Richard Strauss, Bruckner, Mahler, Ravel and much more. There is still more pieces I need to listen to.
Interesting to learn about anyone's "gateway" composer that introduces them to the much wider world of musical experiences within a large genre.

Incredibly relaxing. This music, along with the requisite intoxicants (or without, as you prefer), makes for one damn happy afternoon!
so beautiful and wonderful pianists!
Such gorgeous and lush music. Thanks for posting.
Simply fabulous. Decent, respectable culture, a treasure forever if the planet doesn't burn up.
Yes, nobody dare dictate me what I should like or dislike.
🌞🌞🌞. Good point...❗. The most beautiful CLASSICAL..art...may persist in heaven...even if we do burn up on Earth planet..🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Classical music is a good alternative to music that dictates poor living
Since when is music moralistic? Are your food menus also moralistic?

Gracias !
Sono estremamente estasiato
I get a lot of healing when i listen to mendelssohn song, Thank you~
Ever since I went back to college from the beginning of this year, I started getting back into classical/piano music. It helps as a studying tool and makes me feel less overwhelemed. It also comes in handy for writing. I took 3 classes over the past 6 months and passed them. Recently got an A in history. Almost 10 years later and my writing skills are good. Thanks Mendelssohn, Debussy, Satie and Scriabin
Just discovered this. How wonderful. Thanks for posting. Thanks also for the tracklist.
Danke - Wunderbare . Nice stuff to listen to on a late spring afternoon at 1730 hrs. Wednesday, 13 May 20 in Hopkinton, Mass. USA .
That's one opinion to agree on at 5:30 AM, Saturday 16 May 2020 in Limoges, France after a night of insomnia. Good day to you sir :)!
@@sbareg - " Bonjour " , have had such nights. Even if it is raining slightly in Limoges, a nice walk along the ' nom de la Vienne ' , place de la Republique ' , and through the ' Jardin Botanique de L' Eveche ' . Top that off with a nice Cognac, and enjoy a peaceful afternoon nap. " Bonne Journee " .
this is calming, joyful yet tranquil, I can listen to this for hours.
Such beauty in these pieces.
This is gorgeous - I love you, Brilliant Classics!
Like the first light of dawn, this music opens your eyes to new promises and to all the wonders of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken the loves, the skinned lives and torpor of sleeping watchmen🎼🎼🎼🎼
03:33:22 Sonata in E, Movement .IV is so good 😊 My favorite piece of piano ❤️
To be honest I had never pay much I attention to Mendelssohn until now! I was playing this list randomly and I get a pleasant surprise at every piece played!
Superb! ❤ Thank you!
This is an amazingly beautiful recording and performance. I'm so grateful I strayed upon it.

Four years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. Today, I’m alive and cancer free, serving Him. He is truly the God of a million miracles. Thank you Jesus! I love you.
Praise God!
Spare a thought for all the sufferers whom God neglected to help.
I listen to this excellent compilation almost daily as I work out. So uplifting and expansive. Keeps my muscles in sync and my spirits elevated. Endless gratitude!
Absolutely sublime..Thank you
Thank you for this wonderful collection by one of my favorite composers!!
Thank you. Variations in Eb Op.82 was my first serious piano accomplishment over 30 years ago. This brought back memories.
I've been to Mendelssohn's grave near Berlin. The whole family is there in a Jewish cemetery. What I found stunning is that the cemetery almost completely survived the Nazis. A few bullet holes on the buildings, but no desecration of the graves.
They were busy with the living ones
An absolute joy to listen to especially early in my morning. Beautiful interpretations by Masters and of course, what can one say about Mendelssohn....an exceptional composer of the most memorable and lyrical melodies and so very gifted even in his paintings. One of my favorite composers. Thank you so much for posting...You are giving great pleasure.
Music has no time. Music is timelessness. Learn art of listening.
🎉 instant crack rock 😂🎉.
Thank you very much for sharing this piece of beauty with us.
All of the enduring composers who are well remembered long after their lifetime have one main thing in common. They all have a unique style that makes them identifiable. While they are all influenced by others past and present, they find their voice and establish an unmistakable brand. Mendelssohn is a perfect example.
Paul Heffron n o
Paul Heffron=I do SO agree with you. From the first few bars.
Very well said!
It is a Mendelssohn sound - both his and Fanny's. Their father forbade her to compose, but it seems some of her brilliant works composed while Father was alive were circulated as Felix's. One cannot tell which ones, sine the style is something the siblings, in their own words, developed together.
Bellas, bellas composiciones!!! Algunas me recuerdan mi época de Conservatorio! 🥰
Brilliant! Just brilliant, thank you....!
Many years ago my piano teacher called him insignificant composer, who tried to copy Schubert’s style! I was too young to know better. Thanks god I learned otherwise later in my life. Mendelssohn’s piano music is loved by me as much as Schubert’s and Schumann’s. Thank you for re-enforcing my opinion and love for Mendelssohn. Of the three pianists here I heard only Schmitt- Leonardy before, but Van der Laar and De Boyer are superb here too. Bravi!
Schubert? It was Beethoven who fascinated Mendelssohn! He openly modeled his A minor String Quartet op. 13 on Beethoven's op. 132.
@@paulsomers6048 I worship Beethoven, but I mentioned only Schubert and Schumann, because, for me, their and Mendelssohn’s compositions, dedicated to solo piano, equally enriched Romantic music landscape. I think, I’ve known all Beethoven’s works, since I was 10, but these 3 I discovered much later, especially Mendelssohn. Schumann was the only serious German composer, who befriended Felix and defended him before antisemites ( Wagner included) in musical circles.
Qué placer escuchar a éste genio del piano 🎹 Mi eterna gratitud a ustedes
😌💖❤️🧡💙💚💜💛 Thank you for this beautiful music ...

I now have a new found appreciation of Mendelssohn. I;m glad i studied to this today. Three & a half hours in & everything sounds so fresh still. I cant wait to finish my coursework so i can get back to learning more great pieces. Fully inspired.
Same here. I didn't realise he was so good. I must start working on some of his pieces.
Gracias...
Thanks! i remind when a was a little child and i playing part of this composition
Beautiful...thank you
This composer's work is very nice as it reflects the peaceful everyday life of grass-grazing sheep.
Nothing of the sort! There are too many different emotions, most pleasant, but still. For grazing sheep choose Philip Glass- more appropriate!
I randomly stumbled upon this when scrolling through and I don’t regret it 1 hour and 50 min in !
To BRILLIANT CLASSICS, Your choice of these pieces and the beautiful piano sound are outstanding! Your 'expertise' so to speak, in the search and Feeling of Beauty has rewarded me as I work enthousiastically with the Company of your beautiful offers. Cannot thank you enough. Teresa.
Thank you too!
My favorite will always be 00:54:13 Presto agitato in G Minor, Op. 53: No. 3 and it's so well played... I'm in love, good job and thank you.
