First broadcast: Feb 2014.
In 2009, art detective Dr Bendor Grosvenor caused a national scandal by proving that the Scottish National Portrait Gallery's iconic portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the rebel Stuart who almost seized power in 1745, was not in fact him. Keen to make amends, and suspecting that a long-lost portrait of the prince by one of Scotland's greatest artists, Allan Ramsay, might still survive, Bendor decides to retrace Charles' journey in the hope of unravelling one of the greatest mysteries in British art.

  • I am Brazilian and quite adventourous, and studied Art at a UK uni, a few years ago I was in a café in London, Friday afternoon, bored, saw a picture of Scotland landscapes, and just like that I bought a ticket to Scotland! I went from the café to a shop, bought some clothes and a suitcase! And off I went! Laughing all the way thinking "what on Earth am I doing?" BUT It was one of the most incredible trip!!! Loved the landscapes, the cities, the people, the humor, everything! Bendor in these art series is a real treat indeed...😊

  • Fair to say keeping hold of a picture of Prince 'Bonnie' Charles after the defeat at Culloden, would have been a sign of total dedication to his cause or a sign of suicidal tendencies. I shouldn't think many homes in the Highlands didn't have a visit from redcoats searching for Jacobites

  • Really interested in this due to being a descendant of a Scottish clan who were very close allies of the McKenzie clan. It’s was used as an excuse to make land grabs after and to pacify the highlands and the clan system. At the moment Amazon Prime are showing Outlander which tell of a combat nurse on her second honeymoon with her husband in the highlands at Halloween time just after the war ended. They go the some old stones like stone henge and watch some witches dance around the stones. As dawn breaks the dance is over and women go home and now taking a closer look at the stones she notices a strange flower. Back at the hotel she looks in her books for this flower but can’t find it so as her husband has a meeting with Priest Who has information about his ancestors and who was stationed at Fort William she decides to go back to the stones on her own to pick one. When she gets near to the large stone and bend down to pick the flower she hears a loud buzzing noise and puts her hands on the stone and is thrown back to the year 1742 which is 3 years before culloden. What’s so good about the show is it’s costumes which is as near to perfect as you can get. None of this bright red tartan which was brought in by the Victorians. The show is absolutely wonderful and runs with history. The only slight problem was the name of the learn of the McKenzie clan who was called Callum Ban Campbell McKenzie and Of course in Latin Mac means son of and ban means daughter off so I’m very slight mistake there laugh out loud.

    • Son of the daughter of Mac, it means the original dudes daughter bore him a grandson. It’s not a mistake. I’m half Scottish lived there and only knew the Scottish side of my family apart from my half Scottish half new Zealand bro. Our dad was one of the youngest people to be marster mariner in 1945-60

  • A motorbike? Really? And that gear you wear? Should all this make you look more singularly attractive to the viewer? Maybe so but still gimmicky. Very British...
