First broadcast: Feb 2014.
In 2009, art detective Dr Bendor Grosvenor caused a national scandal by proving that the Scottish National Portrait Gallery's iconic portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the rebel Stuart who almost seized power in 1745, was not in fact him. Keen to make amends, and suspecting that a long-lost portrait of the prince by one of Scotland's greatest artists, Allan Ramsay, might still survive, Bendor decides to retrace Charles' journey in the hope of unravelling one of the greatest mysteries in British art.
The music is as important here as his words in telling the story. Excellent.
"Yes we have four or five Ramsey's..." Gotta love the classy older lady. Bonnie Prince Charlie hiding in the hallway all these years. That's an hour I'm glad to have spent learning something about Scottish/British history.
Thankyou for such an interesting video, you have such a lovely voice as well.
why are people so interested in criticising Bendor?! I don't understand, concentrate on his knowledge and passion for what he loves!
I enjoy watching an learning from bendor even fake or fortune has added more of him to the show but I have to admit I would like to see him with his own show about art of all kinds
Dianne Ledford he does - it’s called Britain’s Lost Masterpieces
It's the nose.
Simply fantastic!
Love it!
This series was fabulous.
This should be called, "Bendor rides his motorcycle through the land." LOL! I love Bendor.....oh and Fiona and Philiip.
This is all so amazing wow great education
👩👩👧👦 Thank You!
Nice Vid, Sir.
excellent vlog..
Not a vlog
The lady who owns the portrait did not seem all that excited about it. Perhaps aristocrats are above excitement--more's the pity for them. The fitting ending to this story would have been for her to donate the painting to the Scottish National Gallery, instead of letting it hang hidden away in a dark hallway. It also appears to be in serious need of restoration. Who am I ... I'm just saying ... UPDATE: I see that the Scottish National Gallery does now own this painting. It was not given to them. The price was over 1,000,000 Euros. Glad to see that the public can now enjoy it!
She died in 2019.
I wonder how much time it would have taken to paint a portrait. Would the person painted for be able to stand that long? And what about kids in the portrait?
Gilgal Biblewheel it takes many, many, hours!
Often, a costume mannequin was setup and still life of props. The Artist would do several sketch sessions of hands and face They would setup the base of the painting & do the portrait for a shorter sitting
This guy sure likes to show himself riding his motorcycle a lot.
Blame the director.
Dude -- how are your shoulders and back ? The reason I sold my ST 1300 was it was uncomfortable..
Maybe your looking in the wrong country. My Dad used to tell me stories of what his grandparents passed down and so on.. My great grandmother is a Cameron from this area. It shows my grandmother is extenct lol she move to the US, Utah of all places. The Donald superceded over the lands there. I know they took portraits when the traivled here. And the LDS historical center might have what your after. The LDS leaders have ways of obtaining family assets that they don't talk about.. This is in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hope this helps. Contact BYU art historical center as well.
What utter bollocks
And he must love his bike gear, walks all around every town and city in it even when not necessary. Poseur
Jordan Schlansky I agree wholeheartedly with you .
Wrong - Alexander II marched an army down to dover and unsurprisingly was not met by french reinforcments that were promised, therefore it was not the first time a Scottish army had been that far south.
Totally different set of circumstances as they weren't an invading army. Nice try.
@@monkeytennis8861 Who weren't an invading army? Alexander or the Jacobites? You really should specify if you want your argument taken seriously.
Much too much footage of motorcycle riding and the host walking away from the camera in tight leather pants.
Not a big fan of the milking here. Like they didn't already know what was in the last box well before they even went there.
