Rather than pay the high price for a new Thuma platform bed, I decided to build my own using American Cherry hardwood.

The bit about making the castle joint stronger is so important. Excellent craftmanship and video.
Very nice work. Most people lack your love for the craft, skills, and patience.
👏👏👏
It's funny, this style of woodworking video is so much more straightforward and easily digestible.
☺☺☺☺☺☺
The spline addition is fantastic !
Amazing job. I’m making one of these now and it’s definitely the most challenging thing I’ve built so far. Lots of great advice in this video!
so Beautiful
Nice work. The splines at the castle joint for strength was genius and added to the look when stained. I love working with cherry.
Yess sir ☺☺☺
first time I saw splines being used and he's right about it.
i don't understand how the splines add strength for the castle joint
The splines are positioned at a 90 degree angle to go against the wood grain. Otherwise the notch in the joint will break along the grain.
Beautifully filmed, concisely explained, masterfully built! Thank you for this thoroughly enjoyable video journey!
The production quality of the video is fantastic! Very entertaining to watch. Also the use of hand tools, and doing things by hand is awesome!
Very nice design, realized with a lot of patience, a lot of skill and a lot of dedication. Thanks for the inspiring video 🙋♂️
The spline is a nice touch. The center piece supporting the slats is thoughtful. Nicely done!
I’ve seen people build it without the spline and it’s a big mistake. It will tare out with a little force if you don’t have that spline.
Brilliant move one the spline. I didn’t quite understand why until I watched the video a second time and saw where is added structural support on the end of rail. Awesome work!
Great idea to rotate the grain in the castle joint! I was about to run into a similar project and this video happened to be in my feed. Was glad to see it! I also appreciate a fellow woodworker whose shop also acts as storage for family stuff. :)
Check your DeWalt Compund Miter saw, models DWS779, DWS780, & DWS790 saws were recently recalled for a safety issue. If it was manufactured between 2019-2022, it has a plastic rear guard assembly that can shatter or break exposing the saw blade creating a laceration risk. If it was made before that, it should have a metal piece not prone to the same failure.
Nicely done. Good detail about crossing the grain for strength
This was an incredible video! Amazing work and I love the two tone on the joinery.
Gorgeous work!
Beautiful work
Beautiful wood and Excellent craftsmanship !!!
Great job on the project and super helpful video for my upcoming build! Keep those videos coming and you'll definitely have a ton of people watching.
Absolutely beautiful! Both the work and the video by itself! The use of hand tools is so cool to watch and your work is top notch! Respect to you sir!
One of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen. Wonderful job, thanks for sharing.
Well thanks KZhead algorithm! I actually designed a bed just like this about a week ago (except it had a headboard.) This was some really high quality editing, great video!
Would love to see your piece as well.
Thank you for sharing this video. I wish I had your level of talent and patience.
Holy cow. Yours looks 100 times better than Thuma's because of the nice cherry grain and the oil finish!
Vans t-shirt and Brooks shoes…welcome to my world 😀👍
Excellent work, love that you rounded the legs at the end
Excellent job Amigo!
haha I was REALLLLLY hoping someone would post this and you did! Thanks!
Loved this build .. thanks! Can't wait to see more videos :)
I'm thinking of doing this myself for our daughters room. Love the video style and lack of talking, just explanations in text throughout the video.
Loving the spa treatment wood shop vibe!
Quanta determinação, também, é de impressionar suas habilidades! PARABÉNS ❤️ Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
This is an amazing piece of work. Congratulations. Im going to try it for my son.
Excellent video. I've been thinking about attempting this myself. If I ever get off my butt and do it I'll use you wonderful example. Thanks!
A most excellent video! Subscribed!

Great video!
Excelente trabajo y diseño
Its so beautiful!!🌳
My hat off to you. Excellent work.
Beautifully done video without any promise or hint or DL suggestion of "easy and cheap". Because of that I could enjoy it.
Amazing that you used very few power tools for this project and instead relied on your skill. Superb!!
☺👍👍
Hi, Great Job!! My wife really likes the stain color you used on the cherry. What is the stain color/number on the Watco can?
Nicely done!
Excellent job!
Awesome video Great work !
Nice work. Great video. Hope to see more . Subscribed.
Beautiful job~!! This is exactly what I want to do for a king-sized mattress to replace our queen-sized sleigh bed. I just need to decide on the mattress I'm going to buy in order to obtain the dimensions.
Gorgeous! ❤️
Awesome project and amazing last song. Checking out that artist now
Great job. Can see more of your great talent?
I need to buy 2 from you lol Full size 🙏🏾

nice work , hope you will do more videos. shop tool video would be cool
Great quality job.
Ótimo trabalho, a cama ficou muito bonita. Parabéns!
this is seriously impressive!
Beau Travail MERCI !!
Wonderful to watch and such amazing dedication to the craft of woodworking. This would be a wonderful set of skills to pass on to the next generation and stop some of the high tech worship.
excelente! parabéns
Meus parabéns MUITO bom excelente trabalho a cama ficou ótima
This is a fantastic video. Except I don't have the tools or skills to make it.
Nice job. I am much more inclined to buy one. The joinery is clever and I would like to experiment on a simpler project. Beautiful work.
That was awesome !
Great video
Wow! Your artistry is well showcased here, that was a magical little journey you took me on, thankyou!
That’s beautiful.
Beautiful man
Who is this man!! Amazing!!
Nice work! you got a new subscriber
nice job- thx
The channel name is very apropos to the overall substance and theme of this video. Very nice.
Nice work! You get a lot out of your space.
Really enjoyed the vid. I am thinking of making the same type but in maple. Do you see a problem if I made my endposts 7 inches square and 18 inches high? I will likely add a taper like yours but not as much. How would you attach a headboard? You should make more projects. Thanks
Amazing 👍👍
Glad I came across this. I'm actually wanting to make one of these for my daughter instead of buying a Thuma.
Beautiful, give us more
I would love to see what wd u do with the back.. amazing build
Do you have any building plans for this?
Great build! Also I really like your bench? Did you use plans or design it yourself?
Loved the way you work👌👍
I’ve made a castle joint table before. I wish I had known then about the spline, what a great method! The patience you show when making this is becoming rare today!
what happens if you dont have that spline in the castle joint. There seems to be more than enough distribution of stress in the joint. Also I bet its fine with a table, you don't usually have 300 pounds of weight plus and mattress on a bed all the time.
Ya that cross grain spline , excelent, no way it will ever snap off.
@@Kaodusanya Weight is not the issue. Just a little lateral movement can snap the tab at the end right off. So he added the cross grain going up and down. Then cut the notch. Like splitting wood. It splits easy with the grain but not against it.

Man, I'm in your situation daily, my sweat drips right down where I'm concentrating, and I freak out thinking about how its going to affect the wood!
Remember to turn on the air conditioning when working in your shop and there will be minimal sweat. If your shop does not have AC, you should consider adding it. Makes it so much more enjoyable to work, when you are comfortable.
i came to see if this was something worth trying. you did an amazing job, but I don't have it in me. ill give them the $1,300 lol
where did you get that dust hood for your planer? I've been looking for one like it for a while.
This saw so satisfying to watch. Only thing that works make this better is if you had more details in the video description. You can help us support you if you put affiliate links to the items you used. And also a list of the the measurements and boards used would be helpful to viewers.
Great work. Where did you get the planes for the bed? I am looking to make one for myself.
Mesmerizing build! I've watched this at least a dozen times. Great idea for re-enforcing with a spline. Others have skipped this part with inevitable breaking. Love the using of biscuits for alignment of add on rails, strength! I've been practicing with a length of 6/4 reidwood and really knew I'd need a spline. Your method is really on the mark. Thanks My dimensions have been 1 1/8 thick to do a build up for the castle. Works okay but the overall dimension is 3 3/8. I think your 4 1/2 is better looking for a kingsize. How much of drop do you have for the mattress, I was thinking an inch would work and give the bed a 22-24 inch height. Your thoughts? Thanks again for such an informative and enjoyable video.
Dude, you’re speaking a foreign language 😅
My level of carpentry ends with sparkling and a Philips screwdriver
why does the spline make it stronger?
I believe it was an inch and a half drop, but once I added the slats it was under an inch. I do experience a little bit of mattress drift, and I have to push the mattress back into place every so often.
@@lucaguarro6116 The spline is arranged so that the grain is at 90° compared to the rail. This prevents the end of the rail at the notch from splitting off along the grain.
Bravooooo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm wanting to make this bed in a Cali King size. I'm trying to figure out how much lumber to buy and was wondering if you would mind sending me your plan?
What router bit are you using to remove the material for the spline? Thanks in advance.
Brilliant work and craftsmanship! Can I ask why the ends of the long supports were cut out on the ends and then filled in with another piece of wood?
To add strength to the joint. The spline is glued in with the wood grain running perpendicular to the wood grain of the rail.
Where I live hardwoods are very expensive, so for a budget-friendly build could I use yellow pine?
