Paul O'Sullivan on forensics, corruption and why South Africa is the BEST country in the world

It's not all roses elsewhere, says Forensics for Justice founder Paul O'Sullivan, who compares SA crime solving to the picture in the UK - a popular destination for SA emigrants. O'Sullivan, who has been shot at many times in SA for his role in fighting the crooked and corrupt, told delegates at the BizNews Investment Conference he is committed to living in SA. So many things 'are wrong in SA', but many things 'are right', he says. He shares insights into his private crime-fighting work in South Africa.

  • Paul you are my hero!!! I left South Africa 5 years ago and resettled in the US. I have opened cases against government employees and the SAPS Commercial Crime Unit refused to prosecute. I even handed a recording of a senior policeman telling me that it's not the old regime. I handed proof of the crimes to them. I spent 15 years in SAPS and know my way around criminal procedures. I'm proud of you and all your efforts. May God have his hand of protection over you. You ma me extremely proud!!!

  • South Africa might be a great country if we would have about 300 000 Paul O' Sullivan's to combat the absolute devastation the criminal ANC has inflicted on the country. South Africa is already in many areas a failed state. No amount of praise singing - even if the singer is a person of Mr O'Sullivan's high standing - will change this reality.

  • I am very impressed at your knowledge of crime and statistics. I am a South African expat living in Uk. In South Africa I was shot during a hijacking, my wife was brutally attacked in broad daylight and our Neighbourhood was and still is attacked by violent robbers, they often have home invasions. You point out how inefficient the UK police force is in comparison to the esteemed South African police. As an example, I was part of the neighbourhood watch and after handing over people that we had caught multiple times for theft, the police refused to charge them. I fully admit that there is no place on earth that is totally crime free, but I think your readers also need to understand the major difference between crime in UK and crime in South Africa . Crime in South Africa is often (even with petty crime) associated with violence. This is by no means the same in Uk. I live in a county called Hampshire, we don’t need burglar bars on our windows and I don’t look behind me when I walk the dog in our beautiful forests.

Don't even lock my front door, never seen an electric fence , neighborhood watch, the local crime report from the police is usually about someone fly tipping rubbish bins or someone who sprayed graffiti. Violent home invasions like I and many others have experienced and will STILL experience is very uncommon here. UK murder rate is around 1200 per year and mostly in earmarked areas, SA sits around 50000 per year with a smaller population. All stats are available .
