  • A couple of ideas: Make one about English's obsession with "right": legal right, left-right, wrong-right, right now, rite, and write. Also, English insists on adding "s" to the end of a word to make it plural, but also insists on adding 's to the end for possessive. Then, English is uncomfortable adding an "s" to the end of "deer" to make it plural or "es" to the end of "fish" to make it plural. Hey, English: "I saw the deer in the field." How many of them did I see in the field? One, or more than one? English: Yes. It was one or more than one.

    @nothosaur@nothosaur3 жыл бұрын
    • “I saw the deer in the field.”

      @keller109@keller1093 жыл бұрын
    • @@keller109 You said, "the deer" is "very clearly just one." No, if I say "a deer", then it's clearly just one. The use of "the" does not clearly make it singular. I could say "I saw the dog" or "I saw the dogs". You said, "No native speaker would add 'the' if it's more than one, unless it has already been established..." Consider this verse from "The Holly and the Ivy" "published by H. Wadsworth, Birmingham, 1814-1818: "The rising of the sun The running of the deer The playing of the merry organ Sweet singing in the choir..." That certainly is a native speaker. And, it is not clear from the context how many deers are running. Early Christmas morning in Illinois, I would often see a herd of deers running across the fields on our farm, and so the lyrics to this song are questionable. The question could easily be answered by modifying the irregular plural form to deers. Indeed, many people have forced the modification of deer, sheep and fish, changing it to deers, sheeps and fishes. It eliminates confusion.

      @nothosaur@nothosaur3 жыл бұрын
    • For plural, wouldn't you just say 'some deer', or 'deer'. And for singular, I don't think anyone really says 'the deer', it's mostly 'a deer.'

      @kukkinklance8919@kukkinklance89192 жыл бұрын
    • @@kukkinklance8919 " For singular I don't think anyone says the deer..." Seriously?! "The" simply denotes one or more things already mentioned or assumed to be common knowledge. I hear it among hunters. When referring to head mounts, I may see a boar head, and ask, "who killed the boar." If more than one mount, I would ask "who killed the boars" If I see a deer head mount, I would ask, "who killed the deer." If more than more mount, I would ask "who killed the deers" That way, it avoids confusion on whether I am referring to one deer or to both. Avoiding confusion is a primary goal in communication. If accomishing that goal requires modification of convention, then so be it.
