To make more of these stories possible, please join us as a monthly supporter: flatbushcats.org/donate. Feral cats may not want to be near you, but they're still great moms for their babies! This video shows how you can give feral cats a safe space to raise their young. While the kittens can be socialized and adopted, a feral adult cat cannot be socialized and does not want to be indoors. The safest and best place for them is outdoors - after they have been spayed and vaccinated.

It’s funny because a few months ago I had the exact OPPOSITE problem. There’s this stray momma cat who always comes around where we live and she grew quite fond of us. For a while she had disappeared and she came back PREGNANT and decided to have her kittens there. The mom is really friendly, so much so that she would even try to call her babies to come and see us. But the kittens were not having it. Finally we lured them into a kennel and took them to a place where they could get trained and used to people and hopefully adopted. She had SIX of them and I find that really funny because the mom is an extremely tiny cat lol. We later got her fixed so no more babies. Guess she’s ours now lol.
She must have been socialized with people, at one time. Thank you for helping them!
It hits different when a cat chooses you 🖤🖤🖤
Fixed? Wild how we can just do this to pets 👺
@@GoatSimGang I get that people have mixed feelings about cats and dogs being spayed and neutered. But in reality it actually prevents the world from becoming over populated with domesticated animals without homes who will eventually end up either being on the streets or put in shelters. If we hadn’t done that she would’ve definitely kept having more and more kittens do to all the stray cats in the area. That’s not fair to her or her potential babies because the sad reality is a large majority of kittens don’t end up finding homes even when brought to facilities where they can be adopted.

One day i woke up in the morning to a constant meowing outdoor. I went out to check and saw a cat hiding in a bush on my frontyard. It's no older than 4 months it seems. She seemed lost and was looking for someone, she was cautious but curious when i tried to approach her. My gf suggests that we feed her, i refused at first because i don't want her to get attached to me, since i've never had any cat before. But in the end, i did end up feeding her, she's so happy that i did too.. Fast forward half a year later, and she ended up staying here and gave birth to 2 kittens. I guess im a cat owner now

I’ve never had dogs only cats so just wondering what differences are most noticeable because I assumed they would be about the same
Almost. Some dogs require more attention than an average cat so you have to be an active person to own one cause they're basically toodlers who want attention while cats are teenagers who prefer personal space most of the time.

She knows she’s safe and her kids are safe but she doesn’t know your intentions. This is best showcased by her allowing you to be close, while feeding them. She knew full well that the stress of feeding her children was being alleviated by some other creature, she just can’t begin to rationalize why.

Yeah, I kinda think they should have waited a bit before releasing mom. 😢 She might have chilled after the babies were adopted. Plus she really seemed to love and enjoy them. Now she's back on the streets alone and she'll never know that love again. 😭
A feral mama cat had 3 kittens in a secluded backyard space at my home. It was a junky area behind a gate. A splendid wonderland for the kittens. We left mom with her kittens up to a point where we brought the kittens in to be tamed before spaying. I continued working with the mom giving her wet meal rewards for coming close to me to eat in a quiet place in the yard. Through patience, everyone was spayed, given their shots, and comfortable with our presence. Mama cat has discovered we have cozy laps and seeks us out for cuddling time with lots of petting and chin scratches. The kittens are very tame as well. Emphasis on patience, folks. Early on, I would daily spend some time on a comfortable seat in the junkiest part of our yard just so that everyone was used to my presence. I set up mom with a pleasant layer of towels for a nursing area and the kittens were corralled with sandbags butted up against our shed so they could safely play contentedly or run for cover under the shed when scared. Mom always had dry food on hand with fresh water. I’m glad I took the extra time to tame the mom because she is a wonderful addition to our household. She sleeps outdoors in a warm little bed on the covered porch with one of her grown kittens that we kept. The coastal California weather has been very helpful in our taming endeavors and the cats find it fun to come in and sit with me on the couch for evening TV or reading time when we’re home in the winter months. Getting the cats acclimated to coming indoors has also helped on noisy nights around the 4th of July when we want everyone indoors. I decided to fix up the junky area in the yard where the kittens were born. All the junk has been tossed or relocated. Now there are lots of flowers and a teeny lawn. I have a big umbrella and a cozy chair there to enjoy the view. Mom has decided that chair is a great place for napping and we can find her there on any warm day. 💜
This is beautify! :) thank you for sharing. You’re very eloquent

I found moms usually want to be with their babies for at least 12-16 weeks (3-4 months). I try to adopt kittens out in pairs too. You've made such a huge difference and it's such a relief to see that people like you exist and are actively changing the world for the greater good for humans and animals alike. Bless y'all.
The mother was beautiful. I have a soft spot for calicoes and torties, I was asked to take on a calico kitten that wasn’t fully weened and I had her for 20 years. I’ve had other cats that cracked 20 but she was the only one who always saw me as mum. She would often sleep in the crook of my arm and would often paddle me and suck on my clothes. Some one in the U.K. did the same for our two brother kittens with their feral mother. It’s far better to have two kittens, it’s amazing the amount of energy they use up playing with each other. The play is also far more 'rough and tumble' than any human could do with them.

Shame she can’t be socialized, she’s quite the lovely calico, and seems pretty calm when it’s just her and her kittens
She could, it takes a long time for trust to be gained and there's a high need for tnr. Kittens are socialized easier and momma is fixed. Some ferals will always have that fear of other felines.
Exactly! It was ridiculous how they just leave! She could die in so many ways on the streets! Poisoned, hurt by a car, to get sick with various ilness... So sad to be treated like trash.
Yes I was going to say they were alienating her
I don't get this tendency in "humans" to domesticate every single cat out there. Yes, life might be harder on their own but some cats do prefer freedom and natural way of life than being lock up by apes.
For the most part it’s good to leave feral cats outside. Feral cats get taken to shelters way too often but people tend to forget that they will be euthanized so you just gave them a death sentence because you thought you were helping.
We adopted a feral Mama and her 4 kittens. She chose our house about 15 months ago. All 5 are now spayed or neutered, vaccinated, etc. One of our other 5 rescued cats really enjoyed watching this video. ❤

My parents have a cat named Simon who used to spray indoors even after he was fixed. They ran out of options so they decided to let him be an outdoor cat. He’s much happier and more approachable. He sleeps in the garage where he also feeds. You can tell he’s happy because he also brings gifts now. You don’t really choose whether a cat is an indoor cat or not: they do. I think that’s what makes cats unique from other pets. You accommodate their needs, they decide the rules and who they will trust. Cats can’t be forced to do anything

I think the mom may have some bob-tail genes making it like that, there super cool and also less annoying to cuddle with since you don't have a tail wacking you and anything you have
There's definitely a Manx Gene or a Japanese bobtail Gene in there. Though my bet is manx since the other two kittens have full tails, the runt had a stumpy tailed. My mom saved a Manx boy who had kittens to my brothers Turkish Algora, and some of the kittens had similar tails so I researched the Manx breed facts. My little ones are two of the kittens, one who looks like her aunt did and the other is looks like a cat in tux with his rumpy riser tail, my Cutie's.
Im about to comment that
Razor Ransom I’m actually thinking that there was an accident, since they’re feral, but it’s possible that they could have a manx gene or bobtail gene
@@quinn_cat6975 Possible, however, how the fur lays on the stump points to it being natural. It reminds me of my FLuffy, who's tail is rumpy riser form. It doesn't look like an accidental cut off, it looks like it's been that way since birth. It's possible since Manx cats can be born as no tail, riser, rumpy riser, stubs or full tails. His siblings had three full tails, him was rumpy riser and his bro had a stumpy like their father. We gave away a few, but all are in good health. So it's possible to have a majority of tailed, and a few with the actual Manx Gene. Those kittens didn't look too old and didn't go far and looked well protected by that shed. They also looked really good so it has to be Gene wise.

They were all taken in and given this kind of treatment, but the mama cat absolutely loves my grandpa because I guess she knows what happened and was grateful her kitties are safe. She's super affectionate with everybody now, years after and hates being outside now.
Pretty epic story
That's amazing.
What a stupidcat then
@@AK4974U You alright buddy? Might wanna check in with your therapist, I'm sure he's wondering why you haven't been in
We sometimes don't realise just how smart animals actually are.. Very hearwarming story!!
What you did for mama and kitties was angelic. Who knows what their fate would have been had you left them outside alone. They all got the best care possible and love and attention as well, along w security for the present and future (by getting them spayed/neutered and vaccinated). I have no words to express the gratitude and happiness I felt watching this. All that come to mind is "thank you", such wonderful and thoughtful folks. We need more ppl like you, ppl that do the right thing JUST BECAUSE it's the right thing and for no other reason. Rare in this world.
Thank you guys for just an amazing job you do with these poor little animals. 😊🎉❤🎉😊

I am going through the exact same thing right now. There are 5 kittens. Mom was spaded yesterday. Kittens are eating on there own. Mom will soon be let go. I have seen her have 10 litters. Took me 5 years to catch her. One of her kittens from a few years ago has now been living with us for 2 years. He is a wonderful kitty.
It’s almost like she knows the concept of privacy. Incredible how she smacked the camera away at night 🐈
I think it’s because there was a bright light. Night vision only does so much
She can see infra red , that light was bright for her lol
Depends what kind of camera. Anything military is not visible. Lol and I’m guessing this is not a military version of NV . So I’m with y’all on this one
Cats are very private animals
@@rat4992 it’s invisible to humans...not to cats apparently. That’s and IR light from LEDS.
I couldn't foster kittens. I'd end up keeping them all.
Me too❤❤
I read that as 'I'd end up eating them all'
Well, I would eat them
that's what i did. neighbors showed me a feral kitten, and i adopted. she joined my family of 2 other cats
I do the opposite. I work with the local cat rescue to take their older unwanted cats who are in need of a retirement home. I won't foster their kittens nor adopt their younger cats but they do know that I will very willingly take the older cats and give them a home for as long as they need.
I love how cute mom and the kittens are! It’s like they are rainbows in the sky 🩷
Mom cat loved her kittens but she wanted her themselves. The kittens went from pre-feral to domesticated. They did that is best: love, happiness, a new home for the owners and the other cats to be around. Those kittens are precious and angels 😇 to anyone who wants a kitten from a feral mama cat. Great job with mom and her happy kittens. They are blessed with love.

Mom looks like she's trying to get rid of the paparazzi! Good mommy! Thank you all for helping this family...
