Can The WEAKEST Thruster Break The Sound Barrier?

Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to try to break the sound barrier with the weakest thruster in the game, the rocket thruster. With only 60 power, is it going to have what it takes to bring a vehicle to super sonic speeds? How many will be needed?

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

To counter an float overflow you could have the first few chunks always loaded in and just teleport the player to 0.0. That would be pretty much unnoticable if you implemented it correctly. • I've noticed you could shave a little bit of weight from your final design. The gyro stabilizer can replace some of the frame pieces. Idk how much speed you'll gain. Also, you can move the thruster, so they are above the rear ski instead of in front of it and make it a little shorter, and that might save some more weight. Again, I have no clue if you'll gain enough speed.

Yes. In order to receive the title of the Sound Breaker of Trailmakers, you must use all sources of movement, even if not originally intentional (looking at you, power couplers)

  • Alternative Ski Idea: So, since the idea behind using skis in these rocket sleds is to eliminate the speed lost to friction against the ground, I think the same result could be achieved by simply lifting the sled off the ground. Now I know that the spirit of these videos is to make super-sonic land vehicles however, I believe an air-boat-esque design, which hovers slightly above the ground without flying still falls within the spirit of the challenge. To this end, since skis require an increase in weight and vehicle length to add their frictionless effect without removing the benefits of a perfect aerodynamic profile (by Trailmakers' physics standards) I believe a better idea would be to use gimbals and logic. Logic blocks can be used to replace connection points or used to attach gimbals within the aerodynamic nosecone of the sleds, without adding as much size or (hopefully weight) to the build. Additionally, using logic to hover only one block above the ground means that friction should no longer be an issue, and tilting shouldn't be as damaging seeing as the forces should be stabilised across all axes of nosecone and gimbals should tilt to match meaning you still won't have to deal with friction.

  • There must be a break even point where it's worth adding a square of aerodynamic friction to remove however many squares of ground friction. I don't know where that break even point is, but it simply must exist. That means that past a certain length, it's better to add skis on the front and back, and lift everything off the ground. It may also be worth having just the seat and wedges in front, skis in the back, and nothing in beetween.

    @Poldovico@Poldovico19 күн бұрын

  • You might not have needed to stabiliser there Scrapman. You don't see it in the aerodynamic overlay, but windshear is a thing in this game. That wedge block at the top that you pointed downward was not only slowing you down, it was also causing instability at higher speeds because it was catching the wind and lifting you up and making it unstable. Your previous tests have shown that wedge orientation can impact build stability at high speeds too, which supports this observation. For high-speed builds like this, I'm fairly certain that it's better to always have the wedge pieces oriented so that the wind shears to the sides or the top of the vehicle. That way, you have the best windshear and most stability possible without additional blocks like the stabiliser.

    @rjgraylight@rjgraylight19 күн бұрын
  • so, my guess as to how the skis are working is that they check the distance between them and the ground, if the ground is within range, it applies small force upwards to lift the vehicle before touching the ground. That would explain why at high speeds you're getting a bouncing effect.

  • This experiment reinforces the fact that aerodynamics are the major limiting factor in breaking the sound barrier in Trailmakers. If I recall correctly, he needed two of the large rocket engines, each 30 times more powerful than one of these little rocket thrusters, so by thrust alone it would have taken 60 thrusters. But since the aerodynamic profile is only a 2x3 instead of a 4x4, less than half the cross-sectional area, it took far less than that - even before the addition of skis.

  • I did a frame by frame comparison and a 4x1 wedge definitely has faster moving arrows than a 3x1 wedge. The arrows on the skis seem to match the speed 3x1 wedge. It's pretty much impossible to notice if you don't go frame by frame though.

  • @18:27 if you move the bottom thrusters to the top you could move the skies underneath and remove more weight and the extra flat connector Idk if that would be enough for 8 to do it but just a little more optimized

  • I think you could have trimmed down the profile a decent bit with 8 thrusters. Not sure it would be enough, but maybe. I'm also very curious about the aerodynamic differences between skis and 1x4 wedges - could have reduced some more weight (and friction) if they're the same. Side note: can you break the sound barrier with gyros?

    @justadude7455@justadude745519 күн бұрын
  • Two things: I'm not sure if you did Propellers? And you could try breaking the sound barrier with outboard engines in a boat/hydrofoil. That might be challenging.

  • You should use mirror block to lower friction, they have no aerodynamic resistance and are a 1x1x1. Also using shield blocks on the very front, as the sides of the shield block have the same drag as a 4x1x1 wedge.

  • using the same design, i just did it with 6, just by removing the non necessary weight. edit: the version with 6 is very hard to control. it only manages so move in a straight line, only about once every 10 attempts. so i made a new version with 8 that reaches 1350 every time. both were uploaded to the workshop with your video title as it's name. p.s please do a "multiplayer Monday" where you evolve the vehicles like darwin evolution. start with a boat, than evolve the winner's vehicle to a boat, then to a plane. i think that would be amazing. having only a minute or so, to "evolve" so most of the old stuff stays.

  • I think (might be wrong) that the inverted round aerodynamics is less weight than the 1x2 wedge. ALSO: A propeller and helicopter engine sound barrier challenge would be cool with the different blade sizes (smallest to largest) (and if you haven't already done it). AND: I saw @notonlyhuman6073 recommended raw engines/thrusters, and think that would also be really cool to see as they are heavy, and have a short use time, but many attachment points. As always though, continue to make great videos :)

  • There's some small things that Scrapman didn't realise that annoy me. 1) Instead of using wedges, he could've used the inverted curve pieces, as I'm pretty sure they're lighter. 2) When he adds the gyro stabiliser, there's two grid blocks and a wedge that are made pointless, as the gyro could've just replaced them. Never mind, just seen that he fixed issue 2.
