  • I find the usage of personification in this video to be very interesting. The fact that the only ones given faces are the man, woman and monster creates a strange effect. It's very natural for someone to feel empathy for the man and the woman, it feels like they are being pushed around, that they didn't choose to be in this situation but really they are lashing out and hurting those around them, but because the people they are hurting are faceless entities we don't feel that same degree of empathy for them. Even the monster being shot while destroying the city feels like an injustice, like it should be left alone. You see no life in the city, the things shooting at the monster are either faceless "people" or metal wedges, in contrast the monster grimaces and panics every time it is hurt. Deep down you know the monster is the villain in this situation but knowing that behind it is still the same poor alone man and woman, who cant even reach one another, makes you feel as if the monster itself is a victim of some great cosmic injustice. And all these emotions are sparked in us because a few people have faces and a few others don't.

  • I'm four years late to this masterpiece, and I just need to address the excellent storytelling in a MUSIC VIDEO, it's even better when you realise most of the clips are out of time, but seamlessly feel like they're apart of the current scene that is happening, until it gets close to the climax and then you realise what's happening, it's honestly a great way to blind your viewers before finally giving them what they crave, and speaking of things to crave, THIS ANIMATION STYLE! OH MY GOD, IT'S GLORIOUS-

  • I think both characters represent fear. The girl faces everything head-on out of fear, she doesn't want to be vulnerable. The alien runs away because he doesn't want to lose either. Together they make the ultimate embodiment, a creature too scared to run away but also too scared to rationalize. This fear also evolves as fear is complex, it is sometimes needed but hard to control :) just my thoughts though

  • I think I got the message down of the song down to a note, for me this was the most beautiful love story about a forbidden love but at the same the time the fear that it creates for both of them creates conflicting reactions that result in destruction, the lyrics are literally Mr.FEAR talking about how much he doesn't want to trust in it, to do not fear the love, and the destruction it creates around the city signifies just how badly they are trying despite the maybe eventual outcome. So yeah I cried xD, cheers.

  • I'm a biologist, so, I'm biased to see biological and evolutionary analogies) There's an automatic pattern activated by our sympathetic nervous system called the 'fight-or-flight' responce. It's evolutionary beneficial for our survival in threatening situations. The girl is a huntress - she represents the 'fight' part. Hostility is her usual response to danger, she shoots at people out of fear. The alien boy is a 'flight' part of the system. He wants to run, cower, pretend like he's not here, once some threat arises. In the end, they are two sides of one coin... a coin which we call fear. Together they create anxiety, and it can be devastating. Nowadays, it's not about a tiger hiding in the bushes. A phone call, a deadline or schedule alteration, someone's opinion about you can trigger the same 'fight-or-flight' response and make you feel threatened all the time. The system which ensured the survival of our ancestors is now destroying our relationships, our societies. 'I know it's not real but it's in my soul' is pretty accurate for millions of people who struggle with anxiety in our fast-paced world. Unfortunately, 'no cure is coming, you know'. It's an essential part of our nervous system, part of who we are. The cure, however, can be found by being attentive to your health, maintaining meaningful social relationships and asking for help (psychotherapy, medications, changing your environment). Stay safe.

  • The two characters represent two different types of fear. If you notice, red guy is the only one among his people who has three eyes (thx people in replies). Briefly at the start you see someone staring at him before he puts his hood on. He represents social fear, or fear of rejection. The girl seems to be a confident and agressive person, and she attacks anything she doesn’t understand. She is fear generated by ignorance and pride. Notice that when she fires the arrow, she turns the bow straight at the the red guy, making it seem like its intentional. Furthermore, she attacks the two guards immedatley on seeing them. The beast is the mixture of these fears. One suffered under a societey, and the orher seeks to destroy whatever is strange or threatening to it. Thus, a monster that hates the societey and destroys everything is born. Other fun things to notice: When thrown into a cell, the red guy curls up like he’s used to lonliness and the girl freaks out and panics. Furthermore, he looks inward and and she looks outward, as his solution to fear is to hide and hers is to strike outward The red guy wears a hood to hide his face, while the girl wears a turtleneck that hides her mouth (sometimes), as she does not communicate her ideas well The line “to mind control your needs” blends with this idea quite well I think The items represent how they handle fear. The loner makes and collects artistic baubles (you can see more on his shelf) while the girl hunts and lashes out any time she’s given an excuse, hence the arrow head she shot red guy with. The prison is perfectly symmetrical, which is a way of showing that despite their very different symptoms, they are two sides of the same coin. People struggling with fear. All tools are yellow or have some yellow in them. Yellow seems to symbolize the reaction to or consequences of fear. The red guy is scared, so he takes up a hobby that requires a solid yellow back pack. The girl wishes to lash out so she takes up a solid yellow bow. Whenever the beast is born, a solid yellow dome shaped blast is made. The guards carry their guns both out of fear and duty, so their weapons are only part yellow. Most interestingly, the background separating the video clips is also yellow and is often used to show their separation. The color purple seems to be symbolic for fear. The red guy hides away and wears a purple hoodie. The beast of their combined fear is a light purple. The prison cell that separates them is purple as well. If you notice in the prison scene, the background fades to black, representing the void they both feel, and in that void, all they have is each other. I’ve been wondering about the meaning of red. Let’s start with our window into this world, red guy. Our red guy could be interpreted as being an embodiment of fearing fear itself, as he pulls apart from the beast. At the same time, however, he’s wrapped in the very color of fear, his purple hoodie, and seems somewhat comfortable (though frustrated) in the prison cell, which is also the color of fear. My theory is that meanings of red and blue are swapped. Blue usually stands for calm and red for violence, but here we see we a violent person in blue and a calm person with light red skin. More evidence would be that the bullet/blast fired from the gun at the very end is blue as well. The primarily red soldiers, while they are attacking, are doing it for the sake of peace and security. Furthermore, they are a blend of a harsh red and a faint yellow. Thus, I’d say that they stand for the desire for peace (dark red) due to the consequences of fear (faint yellow), which is usually why a military is organized in the first place, to take on a feared threat and ensure peace. The red guy is almost always on the left and the girl is almost always on the right. This could very well mean that the characters are symbolic for left brain and right brain, logical and creative sides of the brain respectively. This would explain why the baubles are so appealing to each other, as the girl sees creativity from the logical and the guy sees precision from the creative side. Even more interesting, the beast could just be symbolic for a person dealing with their two interpretations of fear, their logical left brain saying to hide away and their emotional right brain saying to lash out. After all, the song is about a woman debating and struggling with her perceived embodiment of terror, Mr. Fear. The most characteristic difference of the two different forms or the beast is the eye. The first has an ordinary eye shape with a pupil, and it is clear the characters see what the beast sees. The only anomaly is that the eye closes side ways, like red guy’s third eye. The second has no pupil, meaning no light actually enters the eye, as well as a mouth that shares the same space when angered. The eye is in the shape of a rhombus, like the guard’s visor. Furthermore, the characters seem to ignore the actions of the beast. Could this mean the characters see what is happening, but are blind to the consequences of their uncontrolled, united fear when they pursue each other only? One answer could be that the eye represents what they fear (Thx @Sttda1 for the idea). The the red guy’s social fear caused by people staring at his third eye (great visual pun btw) and the girl’s fear of the red people result in that beast bearing his eye. The second beast looks like the police visor as they both recently suffered under them. The meaning of the beasts eye could then mean that when we feel fear, we can only see the world through the fear we experienced.

I want to see these two again so badly, their situation, their relationship, their dependance and fear of each other ALL communicated exclusively through action and expression, no words. just... *chefs kiss*. There's much to build off beyond this music vid. i wanna make a crappy made spin-off of what happens next just to satisfy the fanart/fanfic artist in me but god would that take years.

    • I mean I guess you could build off of it, but there's honestly no point. The advantage of music videos like this is that they can be more surreal and don't need to follow narrative conventions. You'd be filling so much in that you might as well just create something new that has it as an influence. The bright side of this is that you're sure to find something that scratches the same itch. For example, if you want something that explores the relationship of two people opposed by society then there's Haven and Saga (which itself is considered one of the comic GOATs).

  • I just realized the first monster and second are completely different, with the second being an almost more evolved version of the first, no longer having just an eye, but some diamond that functions as a mouth too, as well as lines across the body. The first had oversized shoulders and skinny forearms while the second have even mass through the arm. So I wonder if their third creation will be even more evolved than the first two.

It begins to pull them apart due to outside stresses, and because they don't touch, the beast dies again. This is at their weakest, when they realize they need each other the most, and so they reconnect before it all ends, possibly starting the beast again.

Use the end title card 'Mr. Fear' as the Rosetta stone and then some clever guesswork. The tough part is that not just letters are deciphered but so are numbers, which are harder to figure out. I have like 75% of the alphabet figured out and like 40% of the numbers. Anyone else? I can offer some assistance if anyone wants to do this ARG too!

You're much more likely to overcome it if you have someone who's able to encourage it and show confidence.

  • The girl shoots an arrow that hits the guy through a barrier, having aimed for a rabbit that she was likely planning to eat. Upon realizing her mistake the guy decides to give her his keepsake as a sign of peace. She receives it, brushing her hand against his, causing a strange reaction. Out of curiousity they hold hands to see what happens. By making contact they fuse and out of fear move towards the city. The girl is aimless in her fear but the guy is searching for the comfort of his home. Blinded by fear, they aciidentally kill one person and move towards killing a second. They split up in thoughts and body when it comes to killing that second person intentionally though. And after falling to the ground, they are each captured and confined in separate cells. The girl fondles the plant that was given as a sign of peace, whilst the guy pulls out the arrowhead that is an accidental sign of aggression. And their simultaneous fear of each other as unknowns is overshadowed by the greater fear of the outside circumstance and persecution they face. The fear builds up externally and internally in a chain reaction until it explodes, driving them back together. They refuse but end up consumed by their collective fear. The girl represents our fight reaction and the guy our flight reaction. Just like a cornered rabbit surrounded by predators the monster, who is a combination, is forced to fight everything it sees to pursue the flight action. ...And in that codependent situation when faced with that much fear... The mind breaks.

  • I've watched this video a bunch of times, and now I know why it fascinates me so much. This is the first time I've seen an animated music video that visually illustrates the impact of a different kind of toxic relationship, individuals that couple together despite knowing they should be separate; both for the sake of themselves, but those around them. Each time they are joined together, this pairing is fraught with issues, and the obvious external impact is the devastation of other entities around them. The external entities become collateral damage as the couple struggles with their own internal issues and with each other. It takes a lot for a couple to admit "We're better as friends than lovers"

  • I read through many of the comments... But no one mentions that the end of the video actually continues starting at 0:50 . At least, it seems to pick up from there and the animators have hidden this well. Notice at each transformation gets more definition, control, purpose, and unity of mind. At that mark, and the end of the video, happens at what looks like near the center of this city. And at this mark, given these creatures did it twice already, are now seeking to unite. At first, they raged within their new discovery in each other and separated. The second, they raged to stay together after realizing the power they shared, but only together. The third seems to rage against the machine. And since that scene ends in destruction... Who knows the fate of these chosen two and the city of their minds.

    • It's a nice idea, but rewatching from there through to about 3:30 reconfirmed my idea that they're playing a bit of homage to a certain previous animated music video (one of the earliest in fact) with a lot of back-and-forth timeline jumping and foreshadowing / repeating / premonition stuff. What happens at 0:50 is exactly the same as when they touch hands inside the prison cell, just the cropping and order/timing of events is different. The first set is like fragmented snatches of memory and the second is the full wide-angle version. There's other examples of that in the first minute or so, e.g. the fleet of wedge-cars moving to capture the pair, each one's hands holding and examining the other's artefact, etc.

  • I've seen a ton of peopl considering the animation but not really the lyrics We have two people singing, the other is Mr. Fear who is probably just that; fear. Both the verses are from the perspective of this Mr. Fear, telling the other person he's not being understood correctly and that he'll never disappear. During the bridge the other person answers Mr. Fear, telling him that he's hated because he makes them feel alone. I'd conclude that the song is about how fear is needed but often misundestood which leads to all kinds of trouble. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I have at some point wanted the fear to disappear altogether, but it will never do so. Tying this back to the animation I think the huge monster represents fear itself, the alien is perhaps the "flight" part of fear while the human is the "fight" part. Fear consumes them and gets them in trouble, but they're still willing to try again and embrace that fear. (Also, the human seems to be living in some sort of a bubble, perhaps the comfort zone and doesn't fear aggression, while the alien is curious but easily shocked by aggression. They're two very different entities yet both needed.)

However, the two people are trying to cross the gap between their worlds and accept each other, while their conjunction is seen as something destructive to the established ways of life. This is where the Mr. Fear themes come in, as the video is depicting what fear does to society and deviants. Fearing change makes people suppress it, but sometimes its strong enough to fight back and escape.

  • Call me crazy, but I think Fear is trying to tell you (the listener) that although you can't get rid of fear you don't have to. That coexistence is possible, hence the line at the beginning wishing for a faster therapy. From personal experience fear based therapy is all about realizing fear is normal and you shouldn't be afraid of being afraid. Therefore what fear wants out of all this is for you to stop being afraid of it and just accept it. In the video we see 2 different reactions to fear (2 of the most common reactions as well) avoidance and aggression. I won't go too long form about this cause another comment does a much better job of explaining it (Taylor it took me a solid 15 mins to read and absorb your essay good work) Our aggressive girl is almost childlike in her reactiveness. She sees the little bauble and is curious, she sees people who could hurt her or this new person she likes and lashes out, out of fear. Our red boi is different than everyone else so he hide his differences out of fear and avoids confrontation (most plainly evident by his refusal to attack the fallen guard. While I'm unsure if the giant they spawn is representative of their collective fear, it's actions are most assuredly done out of fear. Fear is the most powerful motivator to change ones circumstances so it's usefulness has been paramount to our survival as a species ("Now get us out of here. Just trust in me my dear!") However, as useful fear can be, living in it constantly is very unhealthy. It can distort a person's view of the world, those around them, and others intentions. This is represented by Mr. Fear contradicting himself by also telling you to NOT trust him and warning you he will try and control your thoughts. This song is incredible and has made me think long and hard about my own struggle with fear. Thank you Siames for making this song and thanks to all the insightful comments (Taylor) it really helped me put words to some of my thoughts! Here's to being ok with being afraid, and not letting it control us! Edit: Thanks for the love everyone! Also I just noticed this but the city is perfectley symetrical

  • Mr. Fear is... the beast itself and the fear that comes with it. The two characters are something similar to Yin and Yang. Two opposites that have a lot of friction, which gain balance once they are in harmony with one another. I thought about this metaphor because of the 2 trinkets (the plant bauble and the spear head) sort of resemble the small dots in each of Ying and Yang's insides, which are of opposite colour (spearhead is death, plant is life, let that sink in for a while). In the first transformation, when the guy realized the girl wanted to smash one of his kind, he countered the attack by pushing to his own side and splitting the beast in half. So the beast can only live as long as they are close to each other (basically when the friction starts). In the second transformation, they desperately seek each other, but like magnets of the same pole (or same purpose in this case), when they reconnect and the beast becomes anew, they have a really hard time trying to get very close to each other. Think of both the beast and the "outside pressure" (the army) as a common force that's meant to keep them apart. The stronger they want to connect and gain balance, the higher the pressure (the stronger the beast, the higher the fear, the more massive the aftermath will be). Mr. Fear is the ferocious embodiment of this struggle which grows proportionately to the desire for balance. The barrier that separates Yin from Yang, the deterrent of harmony. The illusion that fools the weak into giving up, the fist that holds hope to the ground. Maybe even... entropy itself? Regardless, in the final phase of the video, the two still want to connect, and that's when Mr. Fear's power turns weaker and says "Don't trust in me, my dear", the opposite of how it went so far, because the two realized that they know "It's not real". My end guess is that they connect once more, but instead of losing control, they fight for each other in unison and actually control all the beast's decisions (but stray from the city and find shelter in the forest where their chaos can no longer harm others, while they try to better understand how this all works). Thoughts anyone? :D Now, coming back to the real world, this song is on repeat ever since I found it. Cheers, SIAMÉS , the song and video are a genius combination.

  • I wonder if the reason they keep trying to come together, even though the result is catastrophe, is because, though they’re the two types of fear, both of them have one thing in common: fear of being *alone*. That’s why, even when the monster of fear was destroying everything around them, and society was fighting against them, they continued trying to come together, because all they had was each other.

  • The fact that in both times we get to see the creature the protagonists make, it doesn't have any legs or way of movement but crawling, makes me think of this bond being unstable and unpredictable. It's new, and confusing to both. No one has probably done this before in their world before. The small detail of making it unable to move without dragging itself around moreorless pulls to me the idea that this experience one may call it is not grounded yet, and they're only just starting to understand how it, and they themselves work. Whenever they join together, the bass in the background is brought front and center, identifying that the creature is in play, and is most likely a more important puzzle piece than lead to be believed, possibly the most important piece.

It looks like they are seeking out each other, the scenes and shots make the illusion that it is just one but it isn't. • Let's just talk about the cool patterns in this music video, the "alien" is always on the left side of the screen, the "human" is always on the right side, always shown in these windows but when they try to have any physical contact, the border between the two disappears and connects into one big window, and when they turn into the monster, the window completely disappears and goes full screen, except for the first time the monster was shown, probably because we still had no idea it was actually these two. Also, the prison building is shown without the borders except for the beginning, other than that, it did not have any of these even when the monster was shown for the first time, either because of the prison or the explosion the two characters make when they come in contact, both are shown in full screen. Anything not related to these two is shown in windows that are placed randomly around the screen. Also noticed that the two artifacts, the blue arrowhead and the sphere with flora inside of it, are shown in round windows, at the first scene of the two characters separating from each other as the monster their faces were also in these circular windows. The arrowhead was at first owned by the "human", and the other artifact by the "alien", yet they are shown being held the other way around, also both of these artifacts were left at the location they turned into a monster for the first time, so they probably came back for them in the future, surely all this has a lot of meaning.
