Adorable baby OWL falls from the nest!

We've seen quite a few young owls here at the centre this year and, luckily, we've managed to get many of them returned home!
This youngster was found at the base of a tree before being transferred into our care. With no injuries found and with the own in fantastic body condition, Lawrie and Jacob set off to try and get it home...
[This site was monitored post-release, with the adult owl returning to feed both chicks shortly afterwards!]

    • Baby tawny owls falling out of tree's is a lot more common than people realise, they often climb back up the tree afterwards.

    • @@pauldurkee4764 really!? They climb!? Or do they hop? I know they have talons and stuff i just know that with the eagles they usually fly back up once they are able, if they are able. It’s crazy how far little chicks of different species can fall- I’ve seen it before where Canada geese will lay eggs in an abandoned eagle nest in a tall tree, the goslings eventually jump down, it’s scary to watch! They’re usually ok but not always. And then I’ve seen that video where this species has to lay eggs on top of these cliffs, it’s the only safe place, and eventually the parents have to fly to the bottom and goad them into jumping off. The chicks literally jump off the cliff and are bouncing off rocks etc it was insane to see, very scary and intense to watch but once you know the chicks shown in that video end up safe it becomes easier to watch

    • @@CenturianEagle When tawny owls reach a certain level of development, before they can actually fly, they become what is known as branchers. They have remarkably strong talons and are certainly capable of climbing back up the trunk. In the UK people see the young owl on the floor and immediately think it needs help, when really if you leave them alone they will find their way back.👍

Imagine the terror of that other baby, after its sibling goes missing, a bunch of noise far below, getting closer, suddenly a head bigger than your whole body appears, more noise, then suddenly there's your sibling again. I wonder if it pushed the other one out...

    • Considering how much of the world we humans have put to our own use and how many wild animals we've made extinct or rare, pursuing them for skins, food, medicine, talismans, land, trophies and sport - I'd say we've already well and truly 'interfered' with the natural order of things. I think we have a duty to do the right thing by those comparatively few animals that are left on this world.

  • I have been told that it is normal for owls (except barn owls) to leave the nest long before they can fly and hang around on branches. In Dutch there is even a name for this life phase, "takkeling"(branchling) and it's generally thought it is best to leave these alone, and especially tawny owls are good climbers. So, why was it necessary to help this one? Maybe it was in a dangerous open location? Or was it not developed enough?
