  • Looks great!! Wouldn't it have been easier to put tack strips on the sides instead of sewing?

    • Good point, David. We discussed it and your idea is my preference too. It would go like this: (Without removing anything from the chair) 1. Cardboard tack strip with the vinyl stapled across the top. 2. Metal tack strips with the nails down both sides. 3. Still have to hand stitch the bottom into the existing seam. We ended up deciding on keeping the appearance as original as possible. As it was he wanted to keep the original vinyl and just fix the hole. But we settled on the better option I think. Thank you for including that! I'll pin your comment.

  • As always Rick, another nice job. As you have mentioned in this series, there is no doubt plenty of this type work out there. It will require anyone doing it to be proficient in their skills. Not just auto upholstery but all the furniture upholstery shops around my area are busy. They are going to want to replace the panels like factory which is a lot of work, and no doubt will charge a lot for that. So if someone really wants their furniture repaired, hand sewing panels as you have demonstrated is a good alternative option. As always thanks for sharing. And for sure, after 40 years, we still run into something new just about every week. As you mentioned, it's a challenge and rewarding when you can fix something that other folks don't want to or unable to repair.
