I made a Minecraft Datapack that overhauls the oceans, in order to beat Minecraft Update Aquatic! This ocean update is huge, including lots of new Minecraft features like the Kraken, Atlantis, Submarines, and more!

  • There are a LOT of comments about Mojang here...i want to make it clear: This is video is not meant to seriously "beat" Mojang. Obviously, this "update" has neither the amount of content, or the amount of quality control. I used a weird metric to measure this simply to create an interesting goal for the video, but to GENUINELY compare my work to a Mojang update is grossly short-sighted. Mojang has to create content for 2 versions of the game, they have to ensure it is well balanced and doesnt change the core gameplay, and they have to make sure it is both very well debugged and that it creates as little lag as possible. I just simply took any cool idea i had and threw it in the game, and the work ive done here would NOT be at all worthy of being a real update. (Maybe parts of it would be cool for a real one, but thats not the point) Im also not going to say that Mojang couldnt do better. BUT, please do not use my light hearted video intended for fun to disparage Mojang. Its not a fair comparison.

    • I'd say it's quite the fair comparison. Sure, your datapack may not be as polished as it could be, but neither is Minecraft. To say Mojang optimizes and debugs their game is insane and quite simply untrue for the most part. There's also the fact you did this amount of work alone while they have 2 different teams working on each version.

      @jewishbanana7055@jewishbanana70557 ай бұрын
    • @@jewishbanana7055 this level of data-packing absolutely involves an amount of coding. it's probably harder in some ways than making the game from scratch due to the work-arounds, too... hopefully the next updates make it even easier, though. the biggest downside to work-arounds being necessary is it discourages people whom lack the skills and/or patience to deal with them. another major one is they can impact performance. also, between multiple open-source clones and tons of technical details about the engine/concepts, anyone truly willing to put forth the effort *should* be able to build a new minecraft-like game from scratch. or at least, build-over the code someone else already wrote.

    • @@ETXAlienRobot201 @jewishbanana7055 guys, guys! I'll just tell ya lol. I have dabbled with coding on and off since I was 10, I started with Basic, and moved on to C#. I never got very good at it, but I could definitely code some simple programs if push came to shove. Data packing, especially on this level, is very similar to coding. It's simplified, but the core concepts are there. The system itself is easier than full-on coding, however pushing it to this level is very challenging. So could I code a voxel survival game? Absolutely not lol. Maybe if I dedicated myself to it for a couple years, but not now! If I wanted to, I'd probably tear Minecraft apart and rebuild it 😆

    • datapacks aren't "just as good as mods" for a lot of scenarios and their drawbacks are definitely noticeable... usually takes way more work to do the same thing as a mod. more compromises. that's not to say i think datapacks suck, they've got way more powerful as mojang has implemented stuff like the display and interaction entities, but we literally got a /damage command not long ago.. and we don't even have NBT crafting. its just.. weird all around. but it's cool i guess for the convenience of not having to install mods

      @avexus7756@avexus77567 ай бұрын
    • @@avexus7756 oh I'm not saying data packs are as good as mods across the board. At the end of the day there's a huge list of things mods can do that data packs can't. But people are also overly harsh on them. I started making data pack content because I noticed how many GIANT, high quality data packs were out there that nobody was looking at simply because they assumed data packs were bad. At the end of the day, my point isn't to say that data packs should replace mods, it's that they have a much better place alongside modding than the stigma around them suggests. For instance, a well-made data pack will almost always be a better option for custom multiplayer content than mods simply because they can add content without requiring all players on the server to mod their clients. Just join the server, and it's there. No hassle.

And I'm not trying to say that adding sharks should be a priority for Mojang but that hypocrital thinking make them lose opportunities on lots of ways to improving Minecraft biomes and ecosystems. What I mean with hypocrital is, that if it is Microsoft fault, they falling in the nocive idea that video games disrupt the minds of young people. If it is Mojang fault's that still being hypocrital and ignorant, while they keep things like the wolf, spider, bees and polar bear, when their interactions with players could permit or enhace them to kill or to try to tame them, and that's ignorant because if not being for that ideology they could add lots of animal mobs (again I'm not saying this is a priority but must be a possibility), with the same neutral behavior but different game mechanics (just like in real life animals are not killing machines that must be killed)

  • Great work. Deep sea needs more dangers and the Kraken is a perfect addition. And i like the mines - although i would look to replace them with something that feels more like Minecraft, e.g. a plant that has explosive spores. Mines feel too modern world warfare to me. Mobility with the sub and sea horses is important when players need to search the oceans. But as you said they are similar - and i would either only keep one of them or give them distinct disadvantages to have players chose their playstyle. Like Infinity vs Mending. I'm a big fan of exploration, so finding a broken down sub that you have to repair sounds fun (also city of Atlantis!!)). Maybe the key difference would be damage, i.e. subs need to be repaired with iron while sea horses require potions. And subs would be a bit more clunky to steer but protect you from damage. Or something like that. And i love the Eldritch Core trade off with permanent hunger. God tier item, but you can't use it forever because it will consume you.

  • looks insane, though admittedly I never understood the point of datapacks, are they easier to make than modding?

    @8bitSpartan141@8bitSpartan1417 ай бұрын
    • The skill floor for datapacks is much lower than for modding. Anyone can make a simple datapack, while making even a simple mod requires extensive coding knowledge. However, building a large datapack like this requires a lot of creative workarounds which makes it on par with making a mod of similar complexity in my opinion. Some major advantages of datapacks is that they're extremely easy to install, only need to be installed on the server and are easy to update!

      @vonleipenstein3807@vonleipenstein38077 ай бұрын

  • Would you be willing to make a datapack tutorial? I keep trying to follow others but they skip around and just don't get to the point most of the time. Just a basic pack that goes over ALL of the basics. Something to teach a foundation in one playlist.

    @DontBother_YT@DontBother_YT7 ай бұрын
    • most tutorials are this way... though datapacks largely feel like it's an intentional thing to omit so much information. some parts are legitimately hard to get in-depth with [worldgen, particularly...] , others i feel like either they expect you to figure out or are actively gate-keeping the information. blame our society, it incentivizes this behavior. i won't deny other issues playing-into this; it is just as difficult, if not more to teach it as it is to learn. however, i don't believe either that it is JUST those reasons. scarcity makes their skills "valuable", thus profitable. also, it's possible/likely they inadvertently end-up giving-away key information which could be used to mess-around with the stuff they made. [well, it makes it easier to do...] there's also another common issue with tutorials : easy content, easy clicks. i agree it'd be great to have a tutorial/playlist [even spread across several creators specialized in different aspects of it] that really lays-down how to do something useful. but one thing that is universal to these sorts of problems/topics : dissect/study what someone else made. it's a good way to learn how to do things yourself. rather than asking "how do i do this?" , ask/study "how did they do this?". bonus points for asking/discerning "why did they do this?". some people don't appreciate this line of thought, pay them no mind, and just don't do something scummy like [re-]sell others' stuff on some shady website.
