2004-2010 Toyota Sienna Buying Guide Part 1 : Engine and Transmission

2024 ж. 19 Мам.
174 010 Рет қаралды

A Toyota master diagnostic technician shares his experience on common problems and things to look for when buying or owning a 2nd generation Toyota Sienna.
In the first part of this video I will cover the 2004-2010 Toyota Sienna Engines and transmission.
This van came with 2 engines the 3.3L 3MZ-FE Engine and the 3.5L 2GR-FE engine.
I discuss issues with valve cover gasket leaks, knock sensor and wire issues, coolant leaks on the 3MZ-FE engine and oil leaks.
On the 2GR-FE I will show an example of the 2GR-FE cold start rattle that could lead to engine damage caused by separation of the Variable Valve timing actuator or gear.
On the transmission and AWD system I will go over a few common leaks form the transmission and the transfer case.

    • What info after the 6 minute mark still applies to 2004 - 2006 Sienna’s, the radiator issue? Is the coolant plate issue and oil line (with the rubber in the middle) all 2007 - 2010 issues, non 3.3L issues? That wasn’t 100% clear to me.

  • Bless you brother! Your expert rundown is awesome and oh so valuable to those able to receive it. Wish that there was such a report for every car I have owned - even better is text report one could stick in their glove box for review. BTW, as to the alternator issue, serpentine belts are SO much better than the old v belts but one change that had to be made to go to them was to the alternator. Engine rotation speed goes up and down each cylinder firing. The alternator is a flywheel and "fights" that. Many older mechanics remember the vibration of V belts due to this. Newer alternators have a rubber shock absorber coupler that solves that. Apparently that coupler can go bad and you get belt chirping (and faster wear on the belt).

Basically all the DYI stuff. Recently I found a coolant leak yikes. Water pump let go. My bother agreed to do the job after watching your video. I also asked him to the radiator because of the age. He was a bit reluctant to change it but I already bought the unit. Well there was a leak in the corner. He also installed all new pulleys and belt. • I bought an 05 Sienna last August with 193,000 miles, one owner, for $5,500. I probably wouldn't have purchased it with that many miles however the guy had all maintenance done at Toyota Dealerships & the Car Fax showed everything from timely oil changes to a radiator replacement; records since day one. No leaks, no problems. The van just turned over 200,000. I pull a small/lightweight tear drop trailer with the Sienna so I want to keep her going for a long time. First owner had the timing belt changed at 96,000 so it's my turn now to replace it again. This video made me realize that I need to do the complete 'package' i.e. timing belt, drive belts, water pump & cam & crank seals at the same time. My other car is an 08 Prius; I love them both! My husband just picked up an 07 Toyota Yaris for $1,000 to do the running around for his business. The engine & tranny are in excellent condition with 153,000 miles. Sadly the young teen girl who owned it put a dent in so many places on the body. He'll be fixing the cosmetic issues in time but for now he loves the excellent gas mileage! The information you share has really been a blessing to our Toyota loving family! Thank you!

Good thing I watched this before I had my mechanic look at this. 1) water pump original but leaking 2) coolant plate leaking as shown 3) Coolant cover next to oil filter leaking not on this video 4) plastic thermostat tube cracked 5) leaking radiator. replaced radiator and condenser 6. timing belt looked good after 80k. Mechanic did not want to replace oil seals on crank / cam. Did get new coil packs and spark plugs. New pcv. I had to talk to him for awhile to get him tuned in on issues with this motor. • Thank you so much for this video and the information you share! You saved me almost $8000. The 2009 Toyota Sienna I bought had a bad transmission. The day after I bought it, I noticed it made a scratching/scraping noise while idling down from less than 40 mph with no foot on the brake or gas. I searched Google to figure out what was wrong and came across your video. It got my Spidey senses up when you talked about the transmission noise. I called the dealer (Prime Auto, Wichita, KS - Sanjay) and he said it was probably a noise from a minor rub in the brakes and to bring it back and they would fix it. It seemed feasible until I had two reputable local mechanics drive it and they said it was a bad transmission. They said there was no way to know how long it would last before it needed a new one, but the sound was the gears grinding each other. I called the dealer and took the van back and had to politely argue with the dealer that the transmission was bad. He said I took the van to "back alley small town mechanics" who wanted to make money off of me. He also said I was paranoid repeatedly. I told him the other mechanics knew they weren't fixing but only diagnosing the car and that I had researched the issue and found the same information. After much back and forth and gaslighting, I kept pushing about returning the van. He said he could give me $4000 for the van I paid $8000 for a few days prior, since it was now a "trade-in." I was getting very frustrated and told him it either needed a new transmission now or he could take it back and give us our trade-in back. He finally said I could take it to Toyota in Wichita and have them diagnose it and go by what they said. The service advisor at Toyota started describing what the van did and I thought it was from my message. He said it came up when he put in the VIN (this info didn't come up on an AutoCheck :( ) and that the former owner had been advised it needed a new transmission. It took a few more days to get our trade back and get the title and payment through, but I am so thankful for this video. I listened to my gut and checked it out after finding this information and stood my ground! Thank you for the information and for giving me confidence in the facts!

By then I had to replace a cracked thermostat cover (black plastic), the shifter cable, alternator, ac compressor (my mechanic friend, I do not do AC) and starter motor. My mechanic friend did 2 timing belts and I did spark plugs twice. But it ran like new. The transmission another conversation. Sadly I never heard of transmission flushes and by the time had the dealer do the 1st one at 126k miles damage had already occurred. If my son had not totaled it in a crash I was looking at a new transmission. Great vehicle and yes I would have put a brand new transmission in it if it had not been totaled.

  • Great and very informative, even for the owners. My wife calls ours a “Tank”. Because the beast is unstoppable in the winter on proper winter tires. As a ten year owner myself of 2008 AWD I can tell you the following: the 3.5 is pretty awesome and super powerful-ours tows 14” enclosed trailer with ease. Pop up behind it doesn’t even gets noticed. I changed a water pump myself one afternoon at 145,000km and it’s not hard at all. I changed all spark plugs preventatively with recommended platinum tipped and won’t have to worry about them for the rest of its life. I changed to an updated trans oil cooler lines that are all metal because our van tows a lot. I replaced the rubber elbow on the upper oil line to an updated part but sadly I didn’t go for an all solid metal tube at a time. Our van doesn’t leak a drop of oil from anywhere, period. Not even from trans or the tiniest transfer box ever, that it has for the rear prop shaft. I fixed/rebuild a squeaking alternator and let me tell you, those suckers are NOT easy to remove from engine-you will be draining the coolant and dropping the radiator slightly. It’s that bad. And that’s about it really. One other thing is a steering rack-not sure if mine was replaced before but the current one has been leaking from pass side outer seal into the rubber boot. I treated the oil with rubber rejuvenation fluid and it’s been unchanged for the last 7 years now. I am of the same opinion that’s if it’s too much work and the part is expensive, let it work for now and let it develop. Oh yes and last but not least, are those stupid tensioner rollers. They absolutely WILL drive you insane with noise and even OEM Toyota part will star squeaking eventually but usually only when it’s cold out. You can only change two of them because the actual tensioner roller is slightly different and isn’t sold separately like the other position #2 rollers.

  • As an owner of a 2007 Sienna with 190,000 miles you were right on with the issues affecting the Sienna. My biggest one is the alternator. I wished you made this video before I had this issue. I replaced the water pump, belt tensioner, two pulleys, crankshaft pulley, and power steering pump and it ended up being a bad alternator!!! It was a big headache but I can't be mad because this van will last a long time and I should be good for another 100,000 miles as I try to hit my goal of 300,000 miles. I will replace my radiator this spring to avoid any transmission problems.

  • Outstanding video, thank you! We purchased a new 2005 Sienna back in the day and it served us well for 10 years and nearly 200k miles. Only issues we ever had were the radiator at ~150k (easy diy fix) and what turned out to be a bad computer that was draining the battery (relatively $$ troubleshooting by a trusted mechanic and not diy). Overall a great purchase though. Considering similar circa Siennas for some of the kids now that they are starting to drive and really appreciate all the information, although after watching some of the 4-Runner videos am thing that might be a better option.

  • So happy to have some one like you helping out the majority of us who lack the knowledge but want to keep our vehicles reliable and affordable. I have a 2007 sienna 147,XXX with slight cold start rattle and possible slight tick heard when the engine cover off but NO codes (P0014, P0015, P0024, P0025, P0017, or P0018). 2007 is the worst year for sienna so I guess its unlikely to get to 500,000 miles without taking the engine out for repairs? How many miles should I expect before it needs the engine out or replaced? I am guessing I should not have the engine taken out for T-SB-0094-09 until the sounds get worse AND I get some code for it...? If I do full synthetic Mobil 1 high mileage oil changes at 2,500 miles instead of 5,000 miles will that be enough to stop the progression of the lack of oil pressure to vvti gear or not matter? So glad I to have a honest master toyota mechanic to watch like you. May the Lord bless you and keep you!

Am told yes. But I am skeptical on it-no record on carfax. But hopefully the service records will show if I add it on Toyota Owners (if the services were done by Toyota dealers). I am planning in replacing everything mentioned (if not reflected on service and history reports) plus oil change, transmission/brake fluid flush and refill, except for the transmission components. Those would probably be around $2,000 of major service. 😅

    @JanYi2023@JanYi20233 жыл бұрын
    • So you get a new one every year? If I understood that correctly of course you wouldn’t have any problems. You don’t own them long enough to experience problems or to begin pouring resources into maintenance. I worry when people talk about the Siennas describing them as highly reliable and long lasting. They can be if you know the extensive list of issues they suffer, approximately when to tackle them with preventative maintenance, and have a heathy line of disposable income. Otherwise I see just as many of these broken down or headed to the scrap yard at -140,000 as I see running around at 280,000. It’s the 280,000+ vehicles we always hear about though, and among those, they either did the work themselves, or paid dearly to get it that far. To most people looking for a reliable previously owned minivan they’ll hear about these and think they are it. Those are the ones towed off to salvage as fairly high maintenance and repairs begin to exceed the value of the vehicle to them right away as it becomes evident the previous owner kicked those cans down the road for the next person at the most critical time in the vehicles life. There are a lot of people a setback like that would ruin for a while. I was excited to own one myself. I’m used to getting 300,000-350,000 on truly reliable, low maintenance or easy to work on, long lasting cars. I thought it would be nice to have a van capable of reaching that range. Now I’m not so sure it’s worth it to get some of them that far even with me doing the work. I couldn’t imagine if I also had to pay $100 an hour on top.

  • I think it's funny how you are being kind by saying they're actually good vans, but here's 19 minutes worth of problems on just the engines and transmissions LOL. The Siennas just don't seem like a good Toyota to buy, after watching several of your videos about them. I've been trying to decide between a first gen Sequoia and a Sienna of any year just for more room inside to go camping and sleep inside, and for better gas mileage. But, I hate having a car that keeps needing to go to the shop, or when they do it's really expensive, and these just seem to be one of those. So, I think I'll eat the higher gas costs and go with the Sequoia and get real part-time 4WD, too, instead of the AWD. I really, really appreciate your very detailed videos.
