In these types of movies, the martial arts hero would often struggle throughout the first part of the movie. He would stumble with his training. Nothing anyone tried to teach him seemed to make sense to him. He would get knocked down in fights. Etc, Etc. Etc. Then, all of a sudden, he'd have breakthrough. The movie would then cut to a training montage that showed him acing all of his training while upbeat music played in the background. Suddenly, he stronger, faster, and more skilled than ever before. Shortly thereafter, he'd have a final fight with his main nemesis in which he would put up a good fight, take a few hard knocks, and then cruise to victory.

Critics panned this movie as a cheesy derivative of the karate kid. While you can’t deny the obvious parallels (and the cheesy dialogue and bad acting), for my money, the martial arts choreography and training montage is much better in this movie than the karate kid. Unlike Ralph machio, Kurt McKinney actually was a martial artist, as were many of the other actors in the movie (including Tai-Chung Kim and Peter “sugarfoot” Cunningham). Additionally, the actual training and conditioning are much more realistic. None of this “wax on, wax off” BS. Jason is doing real work with a wing chun dummy, sand bags, etc. additionally, he’s doing much of the same training that you’d expect in any mma gym today, including lots of roadwork, core exercises, climbing rope, pushups (ok, the one-arm pushups on two fingers are a bit extreme), jumping rope, climbing rope, etc. All of these exercises are also a great reminder that you don’t need the Rock’s $300K private gym with all of its fancy equipment to get into shape; a good pair of running shoes, a jump rope, and your local playground can provide everything you need to get into fighting shape.
