Ian Nepomniachtchi is one of Carlsen's arch rivals in the world of chess. This game between the two is one of the most exciting ones that you would see out there. • He played agressive, but very fair game. When it was queen vs rook, result was pretty much clear. Every GM knows the techinique how to win it quite well. I had a feeling that having e-pawn too did not help white at all. Nepo tried to keep it and it meant his rook was very limited in its moves.Rook had to stay on e-file and it made black easier to push white king to the edge and then to the h8 corner, where checkmate was inevitable . Nice endgame and well converted. For amateurs queen vs rook is one of the hardest endgames and I once even had to trade my queen to the opponent rook, because I did not get rid of the rook in some 25 moves and I was running out of time faster than my opponent.

  • If Ian had studied QvR in more detail he could have mounted a much more stubborn defense. He needed to keep his rook distant from his king until he had a chance to get his king off the back rank. I think in many cases this ending is drawable in blitz despite being a theoretical win.

    @dalriada@dalriada10 ай бұрын
    • Maybe against a player clueless about the principles of Q vs R, but this doesn't include Magnus. To Magnus, this is a trivial win where the "hardest" move order to find under time pressure is losing a tempo by triangulation. A technique every chess player has learned from pawn end games.
