Magnus Carlsen is considered by many as the greatest endgame player to have ever graced the game of chess. For all those who think why, this game is a great example of how Magnus always squeezes water from stone. Check out this battle against Boris Savchenko from World Rapid 2019 along with the commentary by IM Sagar Shah

  • This video really shows how Carlsen's famous grinding endgame technique. Needless to say he anticipated the a pawn being lost in advance, and translated that advantage into a king activity advantage. As Kasparov says, Magnus has the same talent as Karpov: "minimum resources always produce maximum effect".

  • Side note: Magnus adjusts his pieces after his clock has been started. To me, this seems like the polite thing to do, tbh. His opponent has been sitting there politely waiting for him to arrive. It would be kinda douchey to show up as the game is supposed to be starting and then go "let me just stretch out, adjust my pieces, really get settled in. You can just wait on me some more." Doing it on the clock seems like he respects his opponent's time.

  • Non chess player question. Is the guy doing the commentary live, as he sees game for the first time? If he instantly sees what the best move is, what is a blunder - isn’t he the best chess player of the three? Or is he using a computer telling him what the best move is?

    • Actually in most cases they analyse it later. Explain the tricky situation with the help of engines and explain why they played this way and why not the other ways which viewers are thinking. But that move where he blundered was easy to figure out for sagar (the commentator) as he is also an IM .
