I love that scene because the father was right. He and his son had this nonverbal submissive/dominant dynamic and he picked up on his son finding the lashing worth it. It's why he reacted so strongly when the lashing stopped working and glam behaved differently, glam was "winning"

That, and my impression from the original Russian episodes, is that he makes a (pretty good) living writing/programming security software, which stems from his childhood of creating required "layers of security" to hide his private information.
😶
Foreshadowing man :(
For anyone who dosnt know, paginini is actually a compliment towards glam from the other band mates, paginini was considered one of the best violinist of his time and a virtuoso of technique, so theyre effectivly calling glam a musical savant//virtuoso because he can play violin and translate it over to guitar
What I had thought was that they were just complimenting his insane skill haha. But I completely see that him playing violin and being able to translate it to Guitar can be called Paganini 😂
@@DavidD-KingWolf65 18:45 for anybody wondering
Even though Sebastian had a psychological break and created Glam to cope, Sebastian was seemingly in control of the body 50% of the time or more. Particularly in moments of pain and distress he reverts back to Sebastian. (Usually around his dad.) Once Sebastian leaves his father permanently he becomes Glam full-time. Ironically, it seems his original personality was actually the coping mechanism the whole time; his ridged worldview and perfectionism a coping mechanism for the abuse that was a constant through his entire life. Once he lost the abusive parent in his life, he lost his coping mechanism: Sebastian.
I never thought of “Glam” being “Sebastians” coping mechanism, but it seems so obvious now
To be honest Sebastian came back out when he got angry at Dee because he wasn’t playing the guitar right in times of anger and extreme stress and reminders of his childhood make Sebastian come back out
@@Shaditookashinyeah he masked away any and all feelings because they were punished. I really feel as if it isn’t until he leaves and can stop masking he doesn’t have to cope anymore. I also enjoy Glam being an allegory for men being able to be more open about themselves as themselves without being only masculine. I adore Glam as a character because I wasn’t allowed to discover myself till I left at 19 in similar circumstances. He’s written so genuinely and not in a stereotypical sense where it’s only written to pity the character or jsut for the drama of it

Not exactly. I mean… yes, but this scene is a bit deeper. You see… Gustav wasn’t scared of Glam probably wanna kill him. Even when he found out his notes about biting him up Gustav was just angry, not scared. So what really made him fear is the fact how terribly similar Glam was to his grandfather at this moment. At the background behind Gustav you can see a portrait of man with the same crazy smile. So probably Glams grandpa and Gustavs father was even more evil monster so even a shadow of him at Glams face managed to scare Gustav for a moment…
"You're bringing that back with your OWN hands, you understand me?!" Glam is too pure, even when going through hell. And STILL keeping Chive outta trouble.

I hope this series goes on. abuse is still abuse, sure was I beat straight with a ruler? no but I understand having to chose the good friends over the bad family. it makes me cry a bit.glam cares about his family, and he's going to care for his kids. he won't let them hurt the way he will. will mistakes happen sure, but he won't cause them pain. not on purpose. I think something about the whole baseball bat segment gets to me because at some point it's not about protection it's about vengeance. but you can't get revenge, you just have to accept you where hurt, and they won't apologize. distance and time is a strong first step.

@@confusedbuddy sometimes a person’s greatest struggle can be their greatest strength.
There is a powerful storytelling on why his father kept the box, most people believe that it was an act of pettiness but hear me out, the garbage cam was full when his father threw the box in, which means it would have taken out the next morning, that can only mean that right after Sebastian left, his father went out in the rain to grab it and brought it into his home, he brought garbage into his own house, and not only that he kept it for more than 20-40 years (idk how much time passes) and kept it in another box hidden from his family (I say this because glam sister didn't know what was on the box), taking all of this in consideration, we can only guess than in his own twisted way glam leaving them hurt him a lot, enough to bring trash into his house and keep it until the day he died
I thought maybe it was Lydia taking it out who kept it at first

Oh, really? I thought that English Glam sounds like he's got no that contrast beneath Glam and Sebastian as Russia does. Just the Russian actor speaks with common voice as Sebastian and by he's highest by Glam. Just for us, Russian watchers, the authors (their name is Dima & Lina) are recording messages, showing failures during the serial recording, telling about plans, so I can see how it works. 15:55 "G- go to your room.. now." I don't know why but for reason that scene was so beautifully written and acted out, you can see his father's thoughts throughout his expressions, like did I finally break my son? Is he going to harm me now? Only to feel relief followed by regret after he returns the ruler back to him. This is so charming to see the father- although only for a short time, reconsider his actions and actually go to church with his wife. I wish his father would've kept this mindset. The fact his father did keep that box for so long, there are so many possible meanings behind that. Just amazing story telling and visualo
Its either one last fuck you, or perhaps it was an act of regret of how he treated his son
To me, it feels like a “f*** you” to Glam.
@@supremestv That's my point! Some might see it as a father's regret, others that the father never cared for him again
He(father) must have retrieved it on the day itself because it was already in the trash. The decision was made then. It couldn't have been regret since he was angry that day, so it must be conviction to shame Glam. And it lasted his entire lifetime. What a horrible person. Also, to give it to Glam as inheritance is an absolute low. It's a reminder to his son that he(the son) "chose the slums" and that the broken artifact(trash in the father's opinion) will always be what he(the son) amounted to in his(the father) heart.
The father was an abusive man, sick in the head, and twisted. He obviously didn't love his son truly. But he cared a deal enough to try and make him "perfect" a characteristics on abusive people who want to gain success through there children, this is further shown when he talks about if glem was trying to "shame him" through his actions, while beating him. Please don't confuse I have 0 sympathy for the father. His first tried to control glem through abuse, that failed so glem had a secret life, when caught he tried forcing him back by giving him an ultimatum. That failed so his father then responded with yelling and public rejection. I think in some twisted way he had some "care" of sorts that losing him obviously took over his inter life. After all if you didn't care you wouldn't really care for pety revenge. But he took that box back, to shove it in glems face if he ever returned. Knowing he would go to the funeral if summoned. He had the box put in the will as a final you chose the rubble. And probably also to add "you left me so I reject you" which is funny because the son moved on, but he couldn't. Hatred is a cage that only cages yourself. But I think it's sad his father was so twisted. That he couldn't fix himself to being a better person. Monsters aren't all born, there usually made. He let his pride and reputation or honor, control his life. Nothing was more important to him. His son was to be the chosen one among musicians to give him the honor of fathering "that" of course no one is perfect. His son found a way out of this abusive and horrible expectations. I can't even fit everything wrong with it in here. But I feel like I think I captured the soul of the point. His father was a bad man, who in some super twisted way, cared enough to be petty enough to hold onto that for years. Maybe in the deepest darkest part of his heart he held some regret, "maybe". But his pride, was too big that it didn't matter. Glem was better off without him, I only feel bad for his sister who get left behind with that monster.
Glam's father belongs in a meat grinder.
He rly does
That feeling of him finally turning and walking away, never to go back to a house of such pain. Goddamn that hit hard and close to home.
Near the end when his father was smacking his wrist with that ruler and Glam said "no father I'm not disgracing you" broke my heart. No kid deserves this. This is really sad because many kids actually get abused for being the best they can and their parents still can't accept that fact. My heart goes out to every child who got abused, God bless you all
Sometimes I wish that there would be more incidents of abusive parents being brutally offed by their victims. I wish that it all never happened but at least that way the reminder that the kids grow up and the abusive stains of humanity grow old and weak would be nice to make some of them think twice about it. There does come a day when the tables can turn and in this case when they do I don't have any sympathy.
@@uriel005 I don’t think they deserve to die for being abusive. Ik a lot of parents who are abusive hate themselves for it, but it was an un-corrected cycle. Basically worse or the same happened to them and that’s all they knew so when it comes to a frustrating situation with their own kids that’s all they can refer to for parental help. I’m not excusing it, but it’s a cycle that needs to be broken 100%. Death is too crazy though.

I think we know why Glam's sister kind of hates him now. The look on her face when he left was devastating.
She has no right to hate Glam for leaving. She was partaking in the abuse he was receiving from his father so that she wouldn't be in the same place as him. When he left all the pressure probably fell on Lydia's shoulders but she could leave like her brother did. Because Glam got to live as he wanted; he became a musician, he fell in love, made a family. He was happy. Lydia is more likely miserable; thinking her father's inheritance will fill the hole she has. I feel sorry for her though. No one deserves to live like this.🙁
@@silverf8911 yea.
after he left all the pressure was probably put on her so it makes sense
It was sad
She most likely became the one the father took it out on
I am a little sad they had to change the song from "Story of My Life" which had a much greater impact for that scene.
you can play the original video and mute this one when the song plays, the animation match up almost perfectly
They did this in order to maintain monetization and earn income from videos.
I agree
That's American copyright laws for ya.

Chive: hey man, don't wake my mom up. Chive&Glam: *play Heavy metal the whole night*
This... This is art. This is straight-up art. The moment when Glam scares the crap out of his trash-father will always put a smile on my face. However, I was kinda surprised that they decided to translate the word "хлам" (garbage) as "rabble", not as garbage/trash/etc. Although, having translated "rabble" in Google Translator, I realised that it wasn't related to trash, but it actually meant "lower class". Basically, Gustav has called Chive and other friends of Glam peasants, emphasising on elitism of their family and their surroundings. Hits kinda differently now. Other than that, I'm basically speechless. Thank you to everyone, to every single person who helped to bring this masterpiece to the light. You all are awesome.
I think they changed it because 'rabble' sounds like 'rebel'. Just like in the original they made the word play with Glam and glem (?) i dunno russian but I'm sure it meant 'trash'
SAME, WHY HAVE A KID AND GIVE HIM PROBLEMS WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN!! I HONESTLY THINK HIS SMILE HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE PICTURE BEHIND HIS DAD!!
Rabble in english can be used to refer to the lower class. It’s pretty much a harsher way of saying lower class
@@tiffcat3887 it also sounds like “rubble”, which has a similar definition to trash. don’t know if that was intentional or not but it’s still cool
well, as a punk guitarist who grew up with an alcoholic and abusive musician dad and ran away at 18 from a place somewhat called home and started their own life the way they wanted, this episode brought me into tears. thank you for this show :)

I'm pretty positive he suffered a psychotic break, Glam is the part of him that feels joy ,freedom and enjoys himself while masking the anger, lonelyness and fury that is Sébastien. His smile and voice change definitely are strong keys of a split personality. Sébastien was never brave enough to want things or to leave while Glam wanted love and the strength to finally sever his connection to them while venturing out and finding people who will care about him and build his own family.
And you can get a hint of Sébastien in the first episode when talking to Heavy's teacher about "drastic measures"
@@steampunkguy2036 not to mention Dee's lesson
No one is talking about Lydia. Like Lydia spoke to Glam like he was a disgrace as adults but you can see she really did care for him in her final scene as Glam walked away
Here's how I see it. I feel that Lydia felt a sort of natural sibling connection to Glam and felt sorry for him at times and maybe did indeed care about him to some degree. However, it seems to me that Lydia still became a part of the abusive bubble that encompasses that household. In the previous episode she all but threw him under the bus alongside the butler when glam returned back from his audition at the conservatory. Furthermore, during the montage sequence there was a scene where Lydia appears to be criticising or talking down to Glam in the hallway. Of course Lydia most likely suffered some abuse in her days and was probably held to extremely high standards as a child which would definitely cause some big scars but she ultimately managed to weave her way into the abuser role to get out the abused position and ended up channeling her fathers disdain of Sebastian and alongside the butler and possibly the mother and in the end still made life even more difficult for Glam/Sebastian. But yeah at the end on the front porch I feel that Lydia is experiencing a huge amount of feelings which probably do include a care for her only sibling but probably also guilt, fear, possibly anger and maybe even some shame.
Yes I do think so. Yeah and do you know what dnes she said when their father was shouting ať Glam? She said just one or two words and I think it wasn't important but still I wanna know what dnes she say😅😅 (english is not my first language so I didn't understand her)
@@janie_steele333she just said "sebastian"
@@suspiciousmonkey1234_ oh, thanks😁
They were both victims, but she was treated less terrible, because their father saw her as lesser as she was "just a girl" We can see, at the end, she has brused check - father hit her. Either because she lied or to force her to tell the truth.
1:32 he smiling like he win the lottery
Awesome Series This Beats Skibidi toilet
The ending is so sweet- The ending with glam just saying “Fuck them” And being so supportive. Chive helped glam so much- I dont know i just loved this
It sucks that they mistranslated some important lines in the end like Glam's "Don't sweat it" (instead of "F*** them"), and "I chose a family, unlike you". This sucks so much, that I would like to copy the comment. Hope they could redub those lines.
Ive never been brought this close to tears by a show like this. Ever. The fact that Glam is such a strange character, and yet so relatable is honestly terrifying. Im so proud of him, choosing "the rubble" over his poor excuse for a family. I love him so much and he deserves all the happiness he's earned, with Vicky, Dee, and Heavy, and Chive.
I think Gustav was saying "Rebel" It's probably the pronunciation making it sound like "Rubble"
@@GwenKalash Ooohh, thank you! either way its still amazing
@@GwenKalash It's actually "the rabble" :)
In the original Russian version, Gustav said "Trash", now think about what Glam's "Inheritance" was
@@GwenKalash I thought is rabble
I love how when he told his fatehr that he was gonna start studying music that his eyes started to flicker and glow. I absolutely love the idea of Glam surfacing during this episode
Glam is a beautiful soul
This makes me want to cry, he looks so stressed and horrified every second of the day.
honestly as someone who only understands English, the Russian version hits harder for me
For me its the change in music
For me it’s the lip flaps not matching up, but I like seeing both
Now you understand how those who know only the Russian language feel. When good films in English are translated for us. Translation is often worse :(
Completely agree
Same, I appreciate the effort involved but I prefer the Russian version.
Gustav:HE'S LAUGHING AT ME Glam:*cries and bleeds*
21:04 is one of the most iconic scenes in indie animation ever, I always revisit it. Almost three years since this episode came out and people still talk about it. It’s seriously so well done.
Ok but can we talk about how hard Glam tries to break the cycle of abuse. His eldest son has no talent for music, and whilst he echoed his father, he did his all not to repeat it, he tried to show and teach as best he could. The cycle of abuse is hard to break, good on Glam for giving his all not to repeat his father's mistakes.
Yeah, just wish he didn't have that 'talent only' mentality. I'm sure the oldest son could learn if he kept practicing. But I understand why he has that due to family abuse of being perfections.
Yes, but you do see his father manifest in Glam from time to time, but he controls it.
@@cactusrosi1409 technically he used talent as a measure of how fast you learn something, not if you can learn it. But still, good on Glam.
Literally wanted to write the same thing!
