  • The reason for the jesko bare carbon being so expensive is that when it's painted they can use/stitch together any direction or shape of carbon fibre as it can't be seen. Because its on show in the bare carbon option they have to carefully make all the carbon fibre perfectly in line for the whole of the car and it takes alot more time to do so. Still an insane price but there's the reasoning behind it

    • It is the same concept as painted house trim versus stained wood trim. Much more care is taken to the wood selection, handling, sanding and finishing. Everything will be seen. I once worked with a builder who did a special concrete floor, for a house, and he said they had to use special pencils for marking framing and also had to keep the concrete covered for the entire build.

  • I knew as soon as they said the Bentley clock had a tourbillon escapement it would be crazy expensive. The whole piece turns once each minute to cancel out movement and gravity. Those x10 the value of an equivalent watch without it. Source: an episode of Antiques roadshow I watched last week 🙃

      @an0gr0br@an0gr0br11 ай бұрын
    • As an avid watch collector and owner of several watches with Swiss tourbillon movements, the x10 may even be short. Swiss tourbillon movements (just the movement without the actual watch) can be upwards of $60k. Breitling and Bentley are two HUGE luxury brands, and the two together will command an enormous value. I was worried it would be over $200k!

      @watchyourtimeco1@watchyourtimeco111 ай бұрын
    • Most amazingly of all, a wristwatch solves all the problems a tourbillon was designed to fix-- simply by being worn on your wrist. The tourbillon's whole purpose is to compensate for the constant pull of gravity by turning the escapement over once per minute, balancing out the imbalances. This was for pocketwatches that stay vertical in a wearer's pocket for prolonged amounts of time. A wristwatch is always changing position on your arm, so it's never needed.

  • Back in the 90's I worked for an aftermarket car accessory shop. We would do work for the Honda dealership like sunroofs, tint, spoilers, leather interiors, and gold plating (on the EX). The dealership would then list them as factory options and charge at least 4x their cost, sometimes MUCH higher. We would tint a 4 door Accord for them at 85 dollars and they would charge 300. Gold plating was the best. We charged around 65 dollars, and they would list it as factory at 1,000. My dad was a sales manager there. The great majority of the time, the salesmen would use the options as leverage, dropping the cost for the option to a little above their cost so the customer would feel like they were getting something for a deal

  • the watch - i'm a watch person and i can tell you exactly what those jargons mean. the mainspring barrel is basically the power reserve of a mechanical watch. mechanical watches does not run off any form of battery, but from kinetic energy. the mainspring is essentially a spring that gets winded up tighter and tighter and then the kinetic energy from the spring unwinding is what powers the watch. (think wind up toys). a tourbillion is basically a mass of rotating gearsets that spins around in a fixed location in the watch (think earth's rotation). they come as either 2 axis or 3 axis and the more axes, the more efficient and better at countering gravity. their purpose is to counter the effect of gravity on the watch's movement. the movement is essentially the entire mechanism of a mechanical watch that makes it work as a mechanical watch. gravity will affect a mechanical watch's accuracy, hence the tourbillion is there to maintain accuracy. hope i've explained it well enough! bph stands for beats per hour. in other words, hertz. the higher the bph, the smoother the second hand on the watch ticks. normal watches ticks once per second, now imagine a mechanical watch ticking 28800 times per hour, about 8 ticks per sec. but yeah, if you buy an expensive mechanical watch, you're essentially paying for purely the craftsmanship.
