  • 600 dB is not a 4 times louder. Decibels are logaritmic, so if train horn with 120 dB has to be 4 times louder, then it will have only aprox. 127 dB.

    • Because decibels are logarithmic 600DB is about 100x weaker than than big bang and the pressure wave it would create, not including the resulting heat explosion, would be WEEELLL over 10,000,000x more pressure than the center of the sun. Around 28,000,000,000 peta-pascals. The resulting air compression temperature during this universe destroying eruption of this horn would be 2.3e22 degrees Celsius... Logarithmic scales are some serious shit. I did not come up with these number so I cannot speak to the accuracy, reddit scientists did.

A lot of these cheap direct-to-consumer marketed products that don't seem to be solving a real problem are intended for use by people with disabilities, but they can't advertise them as medical devices without falling under the regulations of the FDA. It's much easier to just create a black and white scene of an old guy doing a slapstick routine and the people they're trying to reach will understand that it will be helpful for them.

I wonder if rubbing some shaving cream on the side view mirrors would work?🤔 Edit: After watching Justin reach across the car, I'm reminded of sitting in traffic on a very snowy day and watching, to my dismay, the snow coming in at the perfect angle to pile up on my passenger side mirror and thinking, dang it, now I basically lost a mirror. Sure, most cars from the 70's didn't have the passenger side mirrors; cars before the early 50's generally didn't have seatbelts. I'm grateful for both.

  • Just for reference on how insane "600db" is, sound effectively becomes "twice as loud" every 10db. A jackhammer is 130db. Firearms are less than 140db. Anything past 194db is no longer sound, but instead what is essentially a shockwave. That being said, a 600db horn would be a comical shockwave canon I would use in most video games.

  • My girlfriend has the shifter hoodie and I can confirm it does work well. In Minnesota winters, grabbing hold of a frozen metal shifter hurts. That little hoodie saves you from frostbite, and a 90° day in the sun trying to shift without it can cause bad burns. Great product that solves a real problem.

  • We would occasionally install Horn Blasters "train horns" at a shop I worked at. They were so huge they rarely fit under the hood. I remember fabricating metal plates and mounts to put some under a Explorer once. They were insanely and obnoxiously loud. They were also very expensive, $1k plus for the bigger ones and that was like 10-15 years ago. We stopped doing them because they were junk. Always failing and the company would not warranty anything for any reason. The customers who wanted them were also not the best of clientele, as you can imagine.
