That engine was before VW switched to common rail. It has 1 injector pump per cylinder (yes, 10 pumps in total!), producing more than 2000bar. Nothing today, but good in the glory old days when common rail struggled around 1300 bar.

Today's 3.0 6-cyl diesel in an X5 do 0-100 in 6s (313hp of coruse). But back in time this touareg was a plane!

It's interesting to see so many people are discussing/arguing the speed of this SUV. This car is NOT DESIGNED TO BE FAST. It is a SUV and it is also perfect off-road!

+qarq believe me it's perfect off-roading, it beat hummer in some cases when off-roading and I just took mine off-roading and the tires where completely bald in the front and the differentials weren't even locked and it was doing amazing off-roading. And it beat my dads jeep off-roading with his having all terrain tires on and mine having bald street tires. It also climbed up a 60 degree and 80 degree hill, believe me, it's amazing. I never thought a vw would be as good as it is, but I'm and extremely happy I bought mine.
people talk a lot, but this is not a race car, the perfs are very good for the weight if this car, i already tried one, maybe you judge its slow when you watch the tacho but i can swear it gives kickass in every acceleration, this engine is a torque juice, you can really feel the v10 pleasure

I live in the Usa. I've only seen a V10 Touareg once; maybe twice in my entire life. They're ultra rare.
I have a nice 2006 V10, gently remapped to 370hp and 850nm. It pulls a lot harder than this one does past 100km/h.

It's not as fast as you'd expect it to be
true, but it's not aiming to be fast. if they wanted fast, they'd do a v10 petrol. but the diesel is all about torque, and it shows!

@Cognac Crack ye only 313hp but it has 750nm torque... remap it and you get about 400hp and 1000+ nm torque.

it's a diesel, it's not meant for speed like this... it's meant to go 60 km/h up a hill with a boat behind it... on idle...
It's a stock engine and stock ecu. Weve done 3 runs. Chassis on lowest level and about 3000RPM at launch is best. Chassis on the highest level needs 0.5s. Starting with idle is 0.5s slower too.
just buy a v10 touareg then straight pipe it ahahaha

It's not about acceleration and performance It's about the pulling power of 10 cylinder Diesel Engine with 750NM of Torque
NithiSh JVJ 750nm is not that much nowadays. Many petrol engines make that much if not even more lol. Like AMG's V8 biturbo makes 900nm

This beast has 2x touareg R5 engine. I own R5. Its quite slow but touareg didnt designed for races.Touareg gives you nice tow range and off-road capabilities. 7 seconds is great for 2300 kg car. If you want speed buy yourself cayenne turbo. Cayenne and touaregs are the same chassis. Just engines are different. And cayenne drives more sporty.
+Can Guder Well for the VW Touareg and Phaeton there was a W12 engine. for speed.

in sport mode, sure , but its limiteed , if its a model full, the 5.0 its more strong built and with many improvments, not like standard model

Me too i rally need The v10
fit it with an upgraded hybrid turbos, bigger injectors and intercooler. Then get it stage 2 remap. you will roughly get 500hp and 1000nm of toque (limited). Then you wont be saying it is slow. iv driven one of these and i can tell you it is fast and the torque is unbelievable.

Volkswagen Should've Quad Turboed This Car Engine. Anyone Else Agrees?
Tech wasn't really quite there for proper consumer cars at that time. It's only really the M550d (and its respective M50d counterparts) with that innovation in diesel tech. I suppose the closest to this engine that's in production is the 4.0 V8 in the SQ7 with the little tri turbo trickery. If someone would quad turbo this engine (or the 6.0 V12 from the Q7) I'd empty my wallet for it lol

it is non linear energy. to brake from 200kmph to 100kmph deletes more energy than from 100kmph to zero, because w= m*v^2/2 (v="vitesse" a french word)

1st and foremost BMW 50d engines are NOT V6.They are inline six.This engine was designed about 10 years ago there where no 50d engines back then.It was the mercedes c30 cdi amg that had 3 liters and 230hp about 76 hp per liter and that was the highest specific power diesel then
50d engines are neither inline six or V6, but are V8... because it is 8 cylinder engine and if they could, thex would make inline engine but it is just too big then, so it is V8. smaller engines, from about 2.5 to 3.5 litres are inline six's

Franci Bele Yes Petar is right, The 50d engine is an inline 6 tri turbo diesel engine. It makes as much or more than a V8. You obviously don't know anything about cars especially BMW and how they name their cars and engines. Look it up before you try to correct someone.

Diesel engines are very fast from 0 to 100 km/h, but from 100 to 200 are very slow. They are not for speed, they have a good torque and they are for heavy vehicles like trucks.
Yeah, you definitely have that backwards. Horsepower is what gets you from 0 to 60 or 100 quickly, torque is what keeps you going after that...and diesel engines make stupendous amounts of torque.
Tom McKenna Err no, please explain the enormous amounts of torque when it comes to trucks? Power is pretty much RPM * torque. For maintaining very high speeds you need power.
Think about what you just said. Since power is directly proportional to torque, a diesel could theoretically achieve and maintain high speeds. However, they are often not geared to do so.
Tom McKenna I said it correctly you need torque for acceleration and power for high speed - but what you forget about is diesels lack of high RPM. It's not just the gears it's the lack of high RPM that won't allow you crazy high speeds - it's a much more demanding task to engineer a high speed diesel since you are severely limited by RPM - highest so far is in the Audi R18 etc.. The reason behind the "barrier" is that the combustion is at constant pressure.
If we're talking about heavy truck engines, then I will grant you that those diesel engines have no use for higher RPM ranger, since all the torque is down low and they don't need to accelerate quickly or have a high top speed. However, the engines in today's diesel passenger cars (and some trucks) have evolved to a point where they do use somewhat higher RPM ranges, and thus can achieve higher speeds (assuming they don't have a horribly narrow torque band). My main point is this: advances in modern diesels have brought them to the point where they are no longer as slow or limiting as they once were, and they are much more competitive with gasoline engines. Take for example the new BMW M550d. Yes, I know, an insanely expensive car with an insanely engineered diesel engine, but it can do 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and has 376hp @ 4000rpm. It can also achieve a top speed of 185 mph if the top speed limiter is removed. I think in summary, what I mean to say is that it's not entirely accurate to say that diesels are fast from 0-60 mph, because usually they're not - but they're starting to rid themselves using modern tech.
